Thousands have signed a petition to stop two Indian sisters being gang-raped and paraded around a village naked with blackened faces as punishment for their brother's "crimes".

Amnesty International has called on Indian authorities to ensure the safety of the young women after they were sentenced by village elders.

The organisation says Meenakshi Kumari, 23, and her sister, 15, have been ordered by a Khap Panchayat - a village council - to be raped and humiliated.

More than 100,000 people have now signed the online petition to stop the punishment being meted out in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh.

The unlected, all-male, council made the ruling after their brother apparently ran away with a married woman from the village's dominant Jat caste.

Amnesty's Gopika Bashi, speaking from Chennai in India, told Sky News: "Their brother ran away with a supposedly higher caste person in their village.

"The Khap Panchayat has ordered they be raped and paraded naked."

Ms Bashi told Sky News the councils were usually comprised of dominant caste men, describing the system as an illegal "kangaroo court".

"On many of the times, they order sexually violent punishment as part of their decrees," Ms Bashi said.

The sisters and their relatives, who are from the lower Dalit caste, have since fled the village and are seeking refuge in New Delhi.

Amnesty said the older sister has filed a petition before India's Supreme Court seeking protection for her family so they can return home.

On 18 August, the Supreme Court ordered Uttar Pradesh authorities to reply to the petition by 15 September.

But one of their brothers told Amnesty: "After we went to the Supreme Court, the villagers are even more aggressive.

"In the panchayat, the Jat decision is final. They don't listen to us. The police don't listen to us. The police said anyone can be murdered now."

Just wondering when they are gonna get rid of the caste system altogether. It is not fair for someone to have to live up/down to a label because of the caste they were born to. Plus, to punish the sisters for a brother's crime??? :biggums:

They should rip up their appeal, they need to seek refuge elsewhere.

Seriously though, what is it with India and rape? Why is rape the answer to all their problems?

Actually, this is exactly what Gandhi wanted:

"Independence must begin at the bottom. Thus, every village will be a republic or Panchayat having full powers. It follows, therefore, that every village has to be self-sustained and capable of managing its affairs even to the extent of defending itself against the whole world. It will be trained and prepared to perish in the attempt to defend itself against any onslaught from without. Thus, ultimately, it is the individual who is the unit."

And to think, this man was a trained lawyer. :facepalm

This sort of stuff has always happened in our world.

The only difference is now that there is the internet. The whole world finds out every time one of these fringe situations occur. And not weeks later through a newspaper etc, but instantaneously.

Thus, our level of social progress has increased. The only drawback is that in 20 years after we've "corrected" most of this stuff we'll also be a very PC world where everyone is so similar. Even nowadays, kids from South Korea and the US aren't all that dissimilar. They are pretty much exposed to the whole world at an early age so it becomes easy to learn the "right" way to do stuff.

I predict though that, just like in the US, most other countries will go through everyone becoming similar, then trying to be more independent (e.g., hipsters).

"All cultures are equal"

Different cultures should be respected, but there is a limit and basic human rights being violated is one obvious place most will draw the line.

Why do people rebuild homes in areas that have floods, mud slides, and forest fires every year or so
