First, how do you not like any R&B.
Second, he literally created his own genre. Some people are calling it alternative R&B.

You mean his production team created a new genre?
Even then, ambient R&b ain't new.

They obviously helped, but Abel's voice and style made it all possible. Illangelo is goat though.

Voice and style?
I honestly don't see anything different or original.
Again, the production is what sets him apart and like I mentioned, there's been other artists to create alt/ambient r&b in the past.
And let's take away the r&b label which is applied solely because he's black. Once we do that, he truly doesn't seem so special after all, since singing on ambient tracks has been done since forever.
Im sure if given enough time I can come up with songs from the 60s and 70s that could be classified as ambient r&b or whatever label one wants to give his music. Or I can simply point out to the trip hop movement from the 90s as an example of r&b singers on ambient/dark beats.
What Weekend is doing is simply his version of something that's already been done, at most it can be considered an evolution, not a new genre.

rnb has been the weakest genre of the last decade. and "the weeknd" makes rnb? he makes pop music. what a joke.

I truly cannot see how anybody could listen to songs like High For This, House of Balloons/Glass Table Girls, Wicked Games, Gone (2nd half of this song is GOAT Weeknd), the Party & the After Party, Lonely Star, and pretty much every other song he has ever made and say it isn't unique and original. There have been plenty of male artists with high, soft voices but none use them like Abel does in his music
Have you listened to the Trilogy? Be honest. I won't bash or criticize you if you say no. If you have only listened to songs like CFMF or Earned it then you can't really judge Abel as an artist.

What genre are they supposed to put him under?
This debate over genre just further proves my point that he evolved R&B and turned it into his own genre. He also definitely isn't top. The only pop songs he has ever made are Can't Feel My Face and In the Night, both of which are original and just flat out good pop songs instead of sellout bubblegum.

I live in Ottawa, of course I've listened to his albums.
There is NOTHING different about 'him', it's the production that gives the illusion of being unique.

Why take credit away though? Both production and Abel's voice and artistic ability combine to make amazing ****ing music. Producers like Illangelo and Doc McKinney are geniuses and there is a reason why they work with the Weeknd.
His music is so good that he became an internet phenom off of his House of Balloons mixture even though nobody knew his name, what he looked like, where he was from, nothing. The music alone was so good that it spread like wildfire across the internet even though people thought "The Weeknd" was a band.

I wasn't trying to discredit him, but if I did oh well.
Simply pointing out that he's easily replaceable. Take the same production team and pair it with any of a dozen artists and the same success is generated.
