:wtf: Wow, there is no room for something like this in sports. Ban from the sport is imminent.

Was it the whites or was it the blacks?

Did he died?
Naw but he got headbutted in the butt. I'm sure he's ok, just a bruised ego getting knocked out by 2 kids. Before anyone asks, I don't know if they were white or black :lol

*Edit dammit it's been in question already

It blows my mind people are seeking punishment beyond being kicked off the team. Criminal charges? Really?

Why not?

Why not?
This.

Why wouldn't you charge them? It was clearly a premeditated assault. Unless you believe that 2 players just happened to both accidentally run into a stationary ref that was nowhere near any kind of play.

If he was making shit calls and had absolutely no idea what he was doing he absolutely deserves it

Lets not act like HS refs dont have an agenda or arent biased. **** all HS refs

According to reports he made a couple ejections before the play.

If you dont know what you are doing get the **** off the court

It blows my mind people are seeking punishment beyond being kicked off the team. Criminal charges? Really?Under normal "in-game fight" circumstances, I'd typically agree. However, attempting to spear and tackle an unsuspecting, 45-year-old amateur official from the back while wearing pads and a helmet is probably pretty solid grounds for assault.

It's fortunate the official was not more severely injured. Concussion, whiplash, or vertebrae issues all seem like they could have been possibilities if the first player had hit him just a little bit differently.

I know this will sound dramatic, but that was pretty much assault. I'm trying to think of an apt comparison but it's tough to come by. If a basketball player took a 20-30 foot running start and dropped a stationary ref from behind, only for his teammate to come dive on top seconds later, I think it would have been a similar result. Only, in the real case, these fellows were wearing helmets and pads.

This ain't The Longest Yard kids.

Bets on whether the kids admit to it or put an excuse along the lines of "he got in the way"?

In Utah a few months back there was some high school soccer player who punched a referee and literally KILLED him.

And some loony people out there thought he actually deserved MORE than just a red card and ejection :facepalm

What a crazy world!

What a crazy world! We actually had the exact same situation occur in Michigan last year. A rec league official made a call an adult player didn't like, so the player sucker punched him, tearing arteries in his neck and killing him on the spot.

Yea cause getting tackled and actually ****ing dying are the same thing.

Second dude was way worse, spear head almost to the spine. First guy basically gave him a NYC subway shoulder bump.

I think the first guy made sure to hit him so he didn't hurt him, 2nd dude didn't give a fk. Both are idiots and should be banned from the sport, I don't know if I would press charges. It's up to the ref I guess.

The point is you have to set a stronger deterrent than just getting ejected.

If players know theres no legit recourse against this then what's to stop every scrub who's in there in garbage time and knows hes not playing the next game anyway? Or players playing in the last game of their career?

These are dudes assaulting an unsuspecting and unprotected person. Eventually bad things will happen, even if there were no serious injuries this time.

Like Ive cursed out refs in the heat of competitive moments before, but who legit goes and physically attacks them?? The shit aint THAT important. Those kids are obviously trash and should be dealt a lesson now bc clearly their lack of class has them on a pitiful path already.

It's up to the ref I guess. The initial hit looks absolutely awful from the press box camera. That fellow hits a dead sprint over the course of 7+ yards before he made contact. The lower angle initially looked a little "less bad" but when slowing it down to quarter speed, that first guy is still leading with his helmet.

I mean, he hit the official's shoulder and scapula, so I guess we can give him bonus points for aiming and/or landing a little bit to the left and thus not splitting the official's spine in two but even then, that was a significant hit by a geared up athlete running full speed on a defenseless and unsuspecting human being.

Sidenote, from an ESPN update today:

The referee was "very upset" and "wanting to press charges," Austin Football Officials Association secretary Wayne Elliott said.http://espn.go.com/moresports/story/_/id/13601567/john-jay-high-school-players-suspended-face-charges-hitting-referee

I think prison is excessive, sure a civil suit but prison seems a bit much to me

I hear they 'suspended' these two shitstains .. already trying to minimize what they did looks like .. they should be expelled asap .. there should be '0' tolerance for this nonsense

It doesnt have to be prison. Community service, fine, probation, apology etc are all possible sentencing options.

Personally I'd love to see them receive court-ordered sterilization. Not gonna happen obv, but hey, I can dream.

But something that says "yeah... this isnt allowed in society"

They should be charged with assault IMO. That referee isn't a player, and just like the fans, a bystander.

I'm actually surprised he (the ref) walked away without any injuries. :biggums:

Chill out Uncle Rico.

Why would HS refs have an agenda? They're probably doing it just for the extra cash. They don't give a **** which team wins. I've encountered my fair share of bad calls from soccer refs (and I know how helpless you feel) and I've had my fair share of abuse as a soccer ref but get the **** over it.

Bad calls or bad games do not ruin anybody's future that plays on either team. Probably doesn't jeopardize the coaches of the losing team either.

Even if he made a couple of ejections, they could've been warranted. You don't coach or raise players to be like this. These two players should be banned from playing HS football. It's a reaction "in the moment."

I agree with no jail time but give them probation and community service.

If these 17 year old kids ran up and speared an old man on the street, you better believe they'd be in jail.

What makes it worse, is they planned it out.

The first kid actually jumped helmet first into his back.

Put them in jail for being pieces of shit. They obviously don't care about the consequences of their actions.

Considering the behavior of those players after the ejection...my guess is that the ref was probably warranted in whatever he did. If I were the ref, I would definitely be looking to file assault charges. Completely unacceptable behavior by those kids.
