View Full Version : I admit it...I get offended when people call Kobe a "top 10 GOAT."

Yes, I know they're trolling...but the propaganda does get under my skin. If you want to call that holding an L, so be it.

Kobe is 2nd all time behind MJ and calling him merely "top 10" is just a way for trolls to diminish him.

We have some excellent trolls on ISH. Maybe the best on the internet.

Oh the irony.....

Anyways, 'top 10 GOAT' can mean anything from 1-10. You realize this is all subjective, right?

His top-ten status is not a knock on him; it really shouldn't be construed as such. It's just a testament to how much talent has left their footprints on the NBA landscape over its history, and anyone who respects that lineage of talent will have a hard time placing Kobe at number-two of all time. Those who are well-read on history also would respect any top-ten player in NBA history very estimably as well, considering the abundance of all-time greats that Kobe had to surpass to vault himself in there.

His only second-place status is with respect to positionality, as the second-best Shooting Guard of all time; even in that case, however, Jerry West has a strong case in the eyes of anyone who respects past contributors.

Those who try to contend that he's any place substantially lower than number-ten of all time are the ones who are likely overreaching for grounds to detract him. However, those who rank ahead of Kobe—irrespective to the GOAT (Michael Jordan himself—are all well-known by anyone with any semblance of historianship, and it doesn't take a "hater" to build a strong case for their outranking of Kobe—Kareem, Wilt, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal, and Tim Duncan, just to name several off-handedly.

No such thing as an objective top 10 list.

I can build a stronger case for Kobe over all of them.

I find it insulting when people compare guys like Magic, Shaq, and Wilt to Kobe. Kareem and Duncan are comparable, though.

If you have a compelling argument outside of the implausible ring-counting of them, I would be interested to hear it.

As history stands, however, all of those players have more individual accolades than Kobe, stroger individual impacts (supported by stats), and all except Wilt have performed better than Kobe on the biggest stage in the finals—a touchstone of how many rings they would have under the circumstantial affinity of having played on the same championship-viable teams that he has, which negates the ring-count argument.

If Kobe has a stronger case than them, then contextless generalities will never have any persuasivity, because the mountainous advantages those players have over Kobe with the fundamental basics puts the burden of proof on you to explain why Kobe is supposedly better.

As with most Kobe haters, this will probably go in one ear and come out the other...

Most first team ALL-NBA selections in NBA history.
Most first team ALL-DEFENSE selections in NBA history.
3rd all time in scoring in the regular season and the playoffs. (Still led 5 title teams in assists)
Only player in NBA history with 30,000+ points and 6,000+ assists.
Most consecutive all-star game selections of all time.
Went to 7 finals in what is noted as the greatest conference in NBA history.
Has beaten more 50+ win teams in a playoff series than anyone in NBA history.
Only player in NBA history to score 600+ points in 3 consecutive postseasons.
5 titles.
Top 5 in MVP voting 11 times.
Etc.

None of this matters, though...I get it.

Who even said he's top 10? He's not consensus top 10 at all. Most will probably have him top 10, but there's probably like 30% of respectable bball experts that don't.

Kobe is a top 10 Lakers GOAT without question. Somewhere in the 7-10 range.

Magic
West
Kareem
Mikan
Shaq
Baylor
Wilt
Pau
Fisher
Kobe
Goodrich
