View Full Version : How do I tell between a tear, dislocation, sprain, or broken bone?

I fell hard yesterday on my shoulder playing football. I over ran a pass and tried to reach back for it. I was on wet grass and wearing my Nike Frees. My feet gave out from under me and I landed directly on my left shoulder. (Which reminds me, invest in cleats)
I was able to move it yesterday but it was painful. Today I can barely move it. I lifted it and I heard a snap and it felt better. Then it went back to feeling like shit. Never injured myself before outside a sprained ankle. Can anybody give me input before I pay exorbitant amounts to go to physio which might be unnecessary?

If it is a broken bone I recommend using Cannabis to help it grow back faster. Multiple 2015 studies have shown that Cannabis speeds up the growth of broken bones and helps them heal.

If you dislocated or separated your shoulder when it happened you would be in excruciating pain until it fell back into place. The pain would be incredible and would only worsen any time you tried to move a muscle in the general vicinity of your shoulder. Like instant, total body, in a panicked sweat pain. Especially if it was your first time. You get used to it after a while, but it's still imobilizing.

I can't speak to a tear or break.

I guess it's not that since I played immediately after. I even went to the gym yesterday. It hurts like a bitch now. I can't hold my arm out horizontally. When I get it out there I here it crack.

Probably just a bruise

I would still have full range of motion no? I can barely lift my arm right now. There is no bruising as well

Well I think I can assure you its not broken or dislocated. You would have been in excruciating pain, and you wouldn't be able to move your arm whatsoever without even more excruciating pain. I know because I snapped my shoulder completely in half when I was a 5th grader.

But if it's getting worse not better, and your range of motion in the shoulder is getting worse, you might have a sprain or a tare and it's prob best to go into the doctors if it doesn't start improving within a day or 2.

Sounds like a torn muscle or ligament. I've never broken a bone so I'm not sure how that goes, but I've shredded every joint in my body so I can speak to that.

A sprain I can deal with and not go to the doc. Fack me if I have a tear. Could I tough it out and heal at home?

If it's broken, let it heal on it's own or amputation may be needed. God's way. Modern medicine is the work of the devil.

A moderate to severe tear (based on the pain you're describing) needs a proper rehab. At least a couple visits to an orthopedic dr, followed by a couple visits to PT so you learn the exercises you need to do. You should go with a shoulder. For a knee there are only so many types of injuries and most have the same rehab due to the restricted range of motion. A shoulder is more complicated and the wrong type of exercise can really set you back with further damage.

I'd assume with your profession that you'd have the discipline to keep up with it on your own.

I should at least distinguish if it is a tear or sprain. Thanks man. I just hate paying for doctors.

Unfortunately, you will probably have to get it checked out with a doc. Get an MRI and possibly they have to inject something in there for another type of scan I don't remember what the hell it's called

I shredded my shoulder pretty good and it kept popping out after letting it "heal" on it's own. Was not a good idea. Scar tissue build up will mess you up

Rehab is a bitch, but if you don't do it down the road your arm will be almost useless

I am not 100% covered for this type of service. I still have to pay for the services up front and only covered up to my deductible. It's not cheap to visit physio. I only get 70% coverage on examinations and any rehab. Despite being compensated I still have to pay out of pocket.

I had a dislocated finger once but once I popped it back in place and iced it for about 3-4 days, it was as good as new. Not a severe dislocation.

I had some very very severe ankle sprains. Had one that was so bad when I was younger that I didn't really tell anyone and I thought it would get better by itself. I ended up spending 2 days in bed because I couldn't get out of it about 2 weeks later after making that stupid claim in my head.

A tear, I personally never had one but my friend tore his MCL/ACL and said it hurt a lot. Didn't really go into much detail but he said rehab was irritating because it took about 4-6 months.

A broken bone? Never broke a bone but people I've talked to said it's excruciating pain. I saw someone once break their arm while playing a sport and they were able to tell right away b/c they had a broken bone before. I've heard this is more easy to notice if you are familiar with the pain more than a difference between a possible dislocation/sprain.

Health is a good investment.

This isn't something you can just take one of your supplements for. :lol (not a very original jab...but i had to)
