Woj:

"Free agent Metta World Peace has begun to work out daily at the Los Angeles Lakers’ practice facility, inching closer to a return to the franchise on a one-year contract, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

World Peace, 35, started participating in informal workouts with Lakers players this week at the team’s facility in El Segundo, Calif., and is expected to continue through the start of Lakers training camp later this month, league sources said. No deal has been agreed upon, but there’s an increasing expectation that will happen this month, league sources said.

World Peace had been in the Lakers’ practice facility earlier this summer, too, working against 2014 first-round pick Julius Randle, sources said. World Peace has been out of the NBA since the New York Knicks waived him during the 2013-14 season. He played last season in China and Italy.

Lakers officials are growing in the belief that World Peace, formerly Ron Artest, has evolved into a mature veteran who can impact a young roster with his toughness and resolve, league sources said.

I'd love to see him play another year.

But can't we (the NBA fan and commentary community) just agree to call him Ron Artest? That's one of the greatest names ever. "Metta World Peace" is just... kinda stupid.

Id rather give the roster spot to Robert Upshaw

Mental problems are keeping Upshaw from being a productive player.

MWP is a nutcase as well, Upshaw is too big of a talent that deserves a shot, a non guaranteed contract would do IMO

He won't play much anymore and won't contribute much when he does. Kobes gunning for that 6th ring and artest will only slow him down

Don't see a role for him on the court, but he would be a great locker room guy.

I'm sure most of his value is centered around his mentorship of younger players; but beyond that, I suppose the Lakers saw something compelling in him that leveraged them to contemplate taking a chance with him. After all, with all the one-way perimeter players on the team, how bad he can a 35-year-old Metta World Peace be in comparison on the defensive end? :confusedshrug:

Either way, I'll be interested to see if he even makes the cut coming training-camp time. Lakers are taking chances with too many guards due to their downsizing, which seems tailored towards acclimating to the small-ball vogue of offense that's going to be even more ubiquitous after a team of that archetype won the championship, but it is more than likely that too many will be much better all-around than Metta—enough that whatever he has left in the tank on the defensive end won't be redemptive enough of his offensive shortcomings.

By this I assume you mean he's planning to rob one of the players that actually wins it this year.

He never really fit in with the Lakers when he first signed with LA, but he had his moments. Overall, he was a downgrade from Ariza. He was pretty bad offensively with us, but provided physical defense. Can't imagine how worse he has gotten 6 years later. I want no part of this guy in LA, Artest shouldn't be in any NBA roster anymore honestly.
