On Monday, the Lakers signed undrafted free agent center Robert Upshaw to a two-year deal.
Upshaw, who is 21 years old and 7 feet tall, averaged 1.4 points and 2.2 rebounds a game with the Lakers' summer league squad in Las Vegas, playing only 11.5 minutes a game.
Only $35,000 of Upshaw’s $525,093 is guaranteed for the 2015-16 season, according to a person with access to the NBA’s salary database. The second year of his contract, worth $874,636, is non-guaranteed
According to a team executive, Upshaw was up front about his many missteps when interviewing with the Lakers. The team gave the defensive prospect personal treatment goals in order to earn a spot in training camp.
Upshaw's numbers at Washington through 19 games this last season suggest a significant upside -- averaging 10.9 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.5 blocks in 24.9 minutes -- provided he can show the team he has significantly matured.

Wasn't he projected to go high in draft but then fell off?
Could be something nice for LA

It's a no risk signing really. Can't remember but there were reasons people didn't take him but it's a good move to take a stab at a guy like this. Kenneths already starting the overhype train though

Upshaw is raw. im talking mbenga raw. but he has a knack for shot blocking and the body to become a feared rim protector in this league. Terribly out of shape, which is disheartening, considering hes been training at p3 since he was kicked off of washington. But an NBA training camp + nba veterans and a season in the d league will be the ultimate test for the guy
yes, he has a lot of off court issues and supposedly fcked up during vegas summer league too. so after that, mitch and company were hesitant to sign him and gave him some goals to meet this summer. seeing that they did finally sign him, tells me hes in the right place going forward. at least in their eyes.

i dont think it was ever reported what he did in vegas, but the vibe the laker beat writers were giving off werent good. im assuming partied a little too hard while being unchaperoned under the bright lights of the vegas night life. 21 year olds gonna 21 year old.

If he's the one who had off court issues he's battled unspecified substance abuse and addiction since he started college and has had a bunch of off court incidents. Hopefully he sorts himself out but for a guy his size and skill set to go undrafted and be kicked off 2 different college teams some of his past problems must be significant.
