View Full Version : Has Rotten Tomatoes gotten too powerful?

Their reviews now make or break a film at the box office. I agree with their ratings 4/5 times. But they are getting to much respect much like pitchfork was for music 10 years ago .
No because their reviews don't make or break a film. Some really crappy reviewed films still do well. Your logic is wrong too, Rotten Tomatoes is simply gathering reviews together. Bad Reviews can kill a film, and you can see on Rotten Tomatoes the reviews are bad, but people don't look to Rotten Tomatoes as the only source of review.

What are you talking about? People still flock to shit movies. The Perfect Guy is #1 in the box office right now despite a 20% rating. 20% is terrible.
RT may help give some movies a boost, but people still see shit either way. If anything, it only helps the movie industry, which is bigger than ever.

I always check RT before paying for a movie. I find they are correct most of the time.
Saw Terminator Genisys on a flight recently, it was soooooooo bad...and RT agrees 27%

I check both Audiences' and Critics' score. If they are divided, I check IMDB as well.
only if all 3 panned a movie will i not see it.

RT is an aggregate tho so it's not like one voice swaying views.

I agree with others, you have no evidence to support your premise. Off base. Bad reviews and word of mouth kill a movie; not RT or MC.

Sometimes crappy movies get #1 at the box office because nothing else is out and people fiend to go to the theaters.
But I usually agree with their ratings although if it's anywhere near 50, it's watchable. It's a tough rating system.

Me too. If I'm going to invest $50 for a night out (me, wifey, and, my boy) I want at least a decent return on my investment. Rotten tomato usually delivers. If I'm renting or it's on MC then I couldn't care less.

Conversely, RT always rates horrific art films at like 97% for some reason. I never use real critics for movies, audience is where it's at but even then I'll see a movie that looks interesting even with a bad rating

I usually tend to agree with the audience score more than the critic score.
This.

I prefer ratings of imdb than rotten tomatoes. A few months back, I cross referenced about 10 movies I gave subtle ratings to out of 100% and imdb was usually within 5% while rotten tomatoes may vary as much as 20%.
Although, I do agree that Rotten Tomatoes can easily make or break a movie release.
Sad reality is some classic movies get ignored at first before becoming instant legends later on, i.e. Goodfellas. It wasn't well received right away but now is an instant mafia classic and arguably the greatest movie ever made.

I use the comments as a guide, not the rating.
I've found the rating on many of their opinions to be to the contrary of my opinion.

So this week in evidence, Maze Runner is tops at the box office with 51% despite multiple movies with quality ratings coming out.
