View Full Version : Does anyone else not care if people stereotype you?

I'm asian and I don't care if someone meets me for the first time and immediately thinks I'm a math or science major. Or if they are a little surprised when I do better than they expected on the bball court and football field.

As far as I know (especially since I'm asian and good at math :oldlol: ), they're basically just running a quick statistical analysis in their head when they are picking their team on the bball court...for example, the captains of two pick up bball teams look at me and then think back to the fact that 75% of all asians they've seen suck at sports...so then they don't pick me and i'm one of the last ones to get picked.

So what. Good for them that they used this statistical analysis to pick their team.

Good for you. People spend too much time being offended.

What people have to realize is that while we may equal inside, all humans are not equal on many different scales. To be equal means to be boring.

Why would I care that people hire me for jobs that I am highly underqualified for just because I am white and they assume I am a smart and successful person? I also don't mind being able to shoplift without security following me. As long as I say "hello" and "have a nice day" I can walk out with anything that fits in my pocket.

Non-white people also get hired to jobs they are underqualified for to fill diversity quotas. Maybe employers just like hiring underqualified people?

honestly most asians who are actively at the court trying to hoop are good or at worst serviceable. this ain't gym class where people were forced to play regardless of whether they enjoyed the sport or sports in general.

Nah, they are minorities when everything else is equal. But I get way more benefit of doubt. I don't have to actually prove my worth. People just feel comfortable around me because I'm white.

Chinese looking Filipino here. One time I was driving with my african buddy and this asian lady asked if she could hitch a ride to the hotel nearby. She had a cast on her ankle and clearly couldn't walk.

I was more surpised at the fact that people still still hitch rides nowadays so I motioned her to get in the car.

While driving (hotel was just two blocks away), she admitted she asked me because I was the only asian person she saw.

After we dropped her off, my african friend told me that i was stereotyped as a nice person. And that it would never had happened if he was driving.

The majority of people have no problem with stereotypes an non-pc commentary in comedy or their everyday personal life. My friends, family, etc. are absolutely brutal with race, religion, disabilities, etc.

What idiots don't understand is that those are just jokes and you can't spout that shit off publicly when you represent institutions, governments, and corporations or use them as the basis for policy formation and practices in professional life.

Non-white people may feel uncomfortable around you because you're white.

You actually have to prove your worth more because you're white. In hiring to positions, your race is held against you as members of other races with lower qualifications often get offered jobs ahead of you simply due to the race they were born as.

People can't control how other people feel about other people.

Your words show your inherent bias and racism.

And if a girl doesn't want me because of this stereotype, then it acts as a filter for superficial whores.

I do think people overestimate how much "PC culture" there is. They see some youtube videos of some lefty loons on college campuses and think that's how the entire left is. I know for a fact that most people on the left think these people are just as ridiculous as I do.

Some of our stereotypes are good, than they progressively get worse.

GOOD
-Big dongs, so ladies dig us.
-Only black guy at a pick-up game, get selected first.

Than, it starts going away from that, still somewhat cool.

STILL OKAY
-You're at a party, and they ask you to dance first. (which can lead you back to the good category of the big dong, if the ladies dig your dancing.)

IT'S GETTIN' CLOSE
-So, how is Obama as president (why you ask me that?)

CROSS THE LINE
-Something is stolen at work, you are the first suspect.
-License and registration please. "What's the problem officer?" Are you resisting "No!" ... and why is your gun out officer? :biggums:

Surely you must have been to Asia. You must know how retardedly they drive in nearly every country there except Japan. There are no regulations and rules and I don't think anyone has an actual license because EVERYONE drives like a retard.

Old Asian people grew up driving in crazy land and brought their crazy driving techniques with them to America.

Asian Americans generally are decent drivers. I don't understand why Korean American women suck so much at driving though.

People tend to get uppity about stereotypes even if they are good. I have a black friend in Japan who sighs that people there (who like blacks) think he must be artistic (they think blacks are all musical or artists when they think good stereotypes). Poor dude. He meets people and they think he must be talented. :facepalm (Note: He is, he's an artist, people aren't supposed to THINK that though.)

I'm puerto rican, growing up (especially with girls) you'd get them thinking you were some sort of bad-ass gangster and they were all excited. (I'm about as far from that as humanly possible). :lol

Some stereotypes are true, (I shuffle my feet) and I don't see a reason why people are so offended with it. Heck even my black friends stereotype against other blacks.

I remember this basketball pick up game I played in which I happen to hit the free throw and got the captain position in picking teammates. I can't remember the exact details, but I think I ended up picking two of the younger sibling having their older sibling on the other team.

I actually didn't know that when I made my pick, until someone else made a comment about it, since it appeared that they were from the same dorm room or something similar to that scenario.

my team won.

and in another scenario, I went to the new basketball court, and old dudes were taking the shots where I'm there asking for the ball, trying to get the game going.

I think we can argue that desperation may eliminate stereotyping, as for what makes a news, news? what makes the front line, what's on the second page, and what are the people buying.

i will say that black ppl definitely seem more defensive about it, tho yeah a lot of it likely has to do with how the stereotypes and the historical relationships are a lot worse

example: loud af black guy or girl basically screaming their lungs out on a train or bus, everyone wants to tell them to shut the fvck up, but tell them to lower their voice and they lose their shit

black customer is doing something incorrect that can easily be simplified; try to help them out and there's a chance they'll flip out and think that you're doing it because you're keeping a special eye out on them for being black, think they're a criminal, etc

It's the easiest card to play, and most times in their lives let them get away with whatever the phuck they want.

In my experience when someone plays the race card, you call it out why it's bullshit and they'll drop the race card and switch to another stupid victim card or get pissed and walk away.

Ok, it's the late 90s and I'm living in SoCal a few months after having moved there from Mexico. Back home in Mexico I played guitar for a heavy metal band with my brother, so I had long hair. So now I'm in the US during an era where heavy metal IS NOT IN STYLE :lol, contrary to popular belief, heavy metal in Latin America is huge. Metal bands sell out in big time in Latin America when in the US no one gave a sht. So here I am, looking like a metalhead in LA during a time when hip hop was huge and I was having a hard time getting chicks. I decided to shave my head because of the heat, I mean everyday it was like 100 degrees in Pomona, CA, way hotter than anything I was used to back home. All of a sudden I was getting hit up by hot latinas who like homies and even more than a few cute white girls who thought they were being risky going with an ese :oldlol: Never mind I didn't dress or talk like one. I went with it though, I started wearing baggy khakis and looking more the part, all for that pvssy :lol

I stereotyped myself for that vajajay :yaohappy:

I wouldn't be mad at a cop for thinking I'm a criminal if what he is really doing in his head is running a quick statistical analysis though.

Another example not even having to do with race is when I was volunteering at this hospital. Most other college kids volunteering there just listened to the volunteer director and followed the dress code. I hate wearing uncomfortable clothing, so I never followed it. A couple times I got stopped by nurses and doctors while walking around the hospital and they made me show them my hospital ID.

I wasn't mad though, I recognized that they were just doing a quick statistical analysis in their head (what are the chances that this dude dressed in a nike tee shirt and basketball shorts actually works here?) and were looking out for the safety of the hospital.

Big deal.

Being treated differently (like being pulled over more than I probably should) is wrong, but its just something I brush off, because in the big picture that is life, I have other, more important things to worry about. Actually, not really, I just dont care.
