One of the greatest high-flyers of all-time, and one of my favorite dunkers ever. He'll be missed.

Fun fact: Richardson missed almost two years of basketball and came back late last season for the Sixers. Dropped 29 on the Thunder, no less: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tON3vUSRR5U

Also made for some of the best NBA photography opportunities of all-time:

GOAT dunk contest dunker, imo. His overall resume trumps Vince's single great performance.

Jason Richardson tells Yahoo he had RT knee pain 4-5 days ago & an MRI revealed bone spurs. He retired due to fear of it becoming bad as left

God damn injuries, he could have still put in work this season I reckon

tremendously overrated dunker

"off the backboard, catch it, then go between the legs, and dunk" is not overrated.

bet you can't even go off the backboard, between the legs, and baby hook.

His dunks were very ugly

Only reason Fred Jones beat JRich was because JRich tried to top himself with the 360 off the bounce between the legs (to follow off the glass between the legs). Imagine if Vince didn't mail in his final dunk.

Bone spurs in the knee will only get worse with the added stress. Wise choice. They don't get better sadly. He had a great career before the onset of all the injuries which hamperd him.

I looked to see if he also won a 3-Point Contest but didn't. I'm 100% positive that he's competed in a 3-Point Contest though. Amazing dunker, amazing shooter. He was fun to watch!

Enjoy your retirement J-Rich.

Oops, it was Quentin Richardson who competed and won a 3-Point Contest.

J-Rich was still a pretty good 3PT shooter.

his dunks were technically challenging. he's got so much shit going on mid-air and it all goes so fast that a lot of times you need to replay in slow motion to see wtf just happened.

go try to do some of his dunks with a small ball on a 9ft rim.

a lot of guys with similar or even higher vertical leaps can't pull off the same stuff because they're just hard to do. you're not appreciating the difficulty level that he executed. and he mostly did them on first attempts.

That sucks. He was one of my favorite scorers during his time with the Nash Suns teams. I got pretty excited after he dropped 29 on the Thunder last season and proclaimed he'd make a great 6th man. Those days were definitely over but he could have helped a contender immensely.

As a Warriors fan, I have a love-hate relationship with J-Rich. I thought he was gonna be a Superstar, or at least a perennial All-Star, coming out of Michigan St. (won the title)... but he just turned out to be a really solid player... for a really long time. Can't believe he made it 14 years to be honest.

I think there's only Brent Barry who won the dunk contest and competed in the 3-point Contest (and had a great chance to win in)

I think there's only Brent Barry who won the dunk contest and competed in the 3-point Contest (and had a great chance to win in)I believe Michael Jordan would also qualify for that distinction.

Conversely, I think Ray Allen are the only one to have won the 3-Point Contest and competed in the dunk contest as well.

Kenny Smith, Nick Anderson, Bobby Sura, and Paul George all competed in each but never won.

Smith may be the only one to compete in both on the same day, but I'm not sure.

Kyrie could have competed in the dunk contest, and he won the 3 point contest

Definitely, we consistently hear about Nique, Vince, MJ, Dr. J. J Rich always seem to be forgotten, but some give him his props.

Some people sleep on him at times.

My favorite dunk contest dunk.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PejeH1uzDJsI think one of my underrated favorite moments of that contest was Magic Johnson beginning his streak of "The dunk contest is back, ladies and gentleman!" exclamations. It felt like he pulled that line out for four or five years in a row for a minute there.

I also remember him getting caught up on how the Richardson/Mason battle was the first time people had been excited for the contest in over a decade... before realizing Vince Carter/Tracy McGrady/Steve Francis was just two years prior.

J-Rich was pretty underrated with the Suns too. Huge part of their Conference Finals run...averaged 20 pts (50% FG, 48% 3 pt), 5 rebs. When they were tied 2-2 he hit a clutch 3 to put them up 1 at the end of game 5....but then Kobe airballed a 3 that fell right to Artest for a buzzerbeater layup. They lost all momentum after that.

But anyhow, I'm always a little surprised how many great dunks he still had in Charlotte and Phoenix. It's like I thought he aged 10 years after leaving Golden State.

Was a monster on the Warriors.

Used to shit on the Celtics during the Big 3 era when he was with the Bobcats.

Dropped 30 points in the same game where Westbrook had that ridiculous triple double.
