I remember watching that as if it were yesterday, damn time flies.

I'm still pretty optimistic about the upcoming season, even though I'm in the minority.

MWP won't start. He's 35 and on his last legs. Ironically, the Lakers have stated that MWP was brought in primarily to mentor Julius Randle, and for his veteran leadership. :oldlol:

I'm glad he kept himself in shape during this time from what I read also.

This team is definitely going to give their best effort, but the question is what will be their best.

No way in hell should he start for this Lakers squad if their goal is to make the Playoffs

I know I know, they didn't miss the POs once with him on the roster, but at this point he is washed up...he would be good for 20 minutes off the bench playing against the 2nd unit as he can still play great defense in spurts, but he's an average 3pt shooter at best - teams left him wide open and he would make like 3 out of 10 3s...so he isn't giving you much on offense and their spacing would be HORRIBLE with Hibbert Bass & MWP as the front court, teams would just pack the paint and force Kobe to give it up to Metta or Bass for jump shots...not a good look

he's there for the team chemistry, mentoring the younger guys and obviously because he's close with KB. He couldn't show anything on the Knicks in the 2013-14 season...he isn't going to be better in LA I'm afraid.

Great! Now they just need Pau and Lamar back and they'll be back to championship form.

current ron artest is better than any other small forward the lakers have though

who would you rather have start? nick young or larry nance jr?

Young at least gives them offense, he's going to be on the court in crunch time because of his ability to create and make tough shots, though he shouldn't be playing more than 20 minutes either due to his defense

Lakers to me are better off starting

D'Angelo
Clarkson
Kobe
Bass
Hibbert

the 2nd unit would be formidable with Mo Will and Young being able to create shots and I guess Ron can still play defense and find a few buckets against role players..

He's going to be a body for Randle to go up against at practice all season. Might have made sense to hire him as a player development coach, but this signing has the same effect. he'll be lucky to get minutes in the teens.

he could be a good defensive mentor for ant brown too

Lakers have deleveled to the mode wherein they have nothing to lose and therefore can only sign placeholders and hope they discover another gem in the rough, so I do not mind this signing either way.

His mentorship is obviously the centerpoint to his contributory value. But considering that his workouts with Lakers-players have been monitored by the front office and coaching staff, maybe they found something compelling in his current ability; after all, how scrubbish can be compared to the current placeholder-, rookie-, and sophomore-laden roster? :confusedshrug:

He reportedly planned to return this season (per his agent), but nothing has been announced of that endeavor since. :confusedshrug: Because he never was the most media-friendly player, he's neglected to explicitly announce his retirement

Looking at this got me thinking...3 guys need to be cut, but I don't think Huertas and Upshaw get cut. Upshaw signed a multi year deal, why would they cut him right after doing that? They could of just invited him to camp and cut him there, but no they signed him to a contract. imo, Sacre is gone and Upshaw is taking his place. When it comes to Huertas, do you really think dude would leave Europe just to get cut by the Lakers at training camp? He's gonna be on the roster...so who is the final cut? Hopefully Kelly, I like everyone else on the squad but him.

This team doesn't look bad though honestly, I mean I thought last offseason that we had a solid group of guys as well (dead wrong) but this offseason has been much better imo. Our bench looks real promising.

I agree that Kelly needs to be the one to get cut. Seriously. Watching him guard other SF's is painful. He just can't keep up with the pace. And no way Upshaw gets cut. He has potential.

He's already had a positive impact on randle. Called him out for his ball stopping and told him to watch tape of Spurs players playing off the ball, to understand the importance of continuous movement. That right there is his main reason for this signing (possibly temporary). To get this young kids head on straight and to understand the game of basketball. There's quotes from randle talking about how him and Meta go one on one in practice, and though the 35(?) year old meta is way past his prime, his hands are still some of the best in the league, and randle is learning to adjust his offensive game because of those match ups

There's no guarantee he makes the team past training camp. Hell, hes the 16th man in camp, as of now. But leave it to ISH to make a non-pertinent move a main page stay.

I don't understand why the Lakers just hire him as a personal mentor/trainer then?:confusedshrug:
Every second he plays= the time that the young players are not playing and actually not learning from the floor. If Clarkson played just 10 mins/game last season, I guarantee you, he won't be as good as he is now.

The Lakers 'talents' are vastly overrated. None of them seem to have a shot at being real franchise players. Julius Randle looks like a tweener bust who used to bully his way in college, but now is too short to do it. Clarkson is a Monta Ellis at the very best, not a franchise player in any way and likely not a good role player either as he looks frail and lacks defense. Russel has some potential if he focuses on passing and not chucking.
