Report: Cavaliers signing Austin Daye

By Dan FeldmanSep 23, 2015, 7:18 PM EDT

The Cavaliers have 13 players with guaranteed salaries plus Tristan Thompson, who’s a near lock to return (on the qualifying offer or long-term contract).

Who will claim Cleveland’s 15th and final regular-season roster spot?

Jared Cunningham, D.J. Stephens, Nick Minnerath and Quinn Cook have reportedly agreed to unguaranteed contracts.

They’ll face at least one more training-camp competitor – Austin Daye.

Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports:

Free agent Austin Daye has reached agreement on a one-year contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

The 6-foot-11 Daye has a nice shooting stroke that has sporadically translated to shooting success. When his shot is falling, he provides value as a floor spacer.

But his rail-thin frame limits him in nearly every other area – especially defense.

Daye has spent six years in the NBA, more than Cleveland’s four other camp invitees combined. Perhaps, that experience could give him an edge, though it also means he’s likely closer to his ceiling.

Free agent Austin Daye has reached agreement on a one-year contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Daye committed to training camp with the Cavaliers, and the 6-foot-11 forward is expected to compete for a potential regular-season roster spot.

Daye played 34 games last season with the San Antonio Spurs and Atlanta Hawks, averaging 3.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 10.1 minutes. The Hawks waived him in July. Daye, 27, was part of the Spurs' 2014 championship team.

Daye, the 15th overall pick to Detroit in the 2009 draft out of Gonzaga, has spent six seasons in the NBA with the Pistons, Memphis, San Antonio, Toronto and Atlanta.

I hope he replaces Joe Harris in their rotations. Harris struggled in the NBA Summer League.

I hope he replaces Lebron James in their rotations. Lebron struggled in the NBA Finals.

How is he on defense, is he good for some minutes as Lebron's back-up if the body of Richard Jefferson breaks down?
(Not implying that Jefferson is a good defender at this stage of his career)

Ok. I did a bit of research. He seems to suck at defense ;-)

I am still a believer in daye and Jared Cunningham. Daye needed to fill in to defend 4's and would have become a good stretch 4. Cunningham I thought would be a great nba pg.

Both of those guys should play for the Knicks. Daye and Cunningham for Calderon and thanasis. nah I like Calderon too much but not having his contract next year might? Help w free agency.

Seriously though daye's shooting and length is a perfect fit for team lebron
