I have been thinking about this a lot today.

I can't help but think it's Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The show also ended at a perfect time although it's probably due to Will Smith's success and his movie endeavors that would hold back the show and the rest of the co-stars.

I'd say the best overall is Married with Children. That show is so hilarious and original even today and Kelly Bundy is the hottest sitcom character ever.

I grew up in the 90s and so I was too young to like Seinfeld (now I enjoy it)

My favorite was probably Home Improvement growing up.
I also fuhcked with Step By Step super hard.

I thought Married with Children was funny but trashy so I didn't watch it too often

I think for a while there, Seinfeld was number 1 or very close to it in syndication.

Most people I know who watched this show said it was a hidden gem of the 90s meaning most kids don't know about it like they know about Friends, Fresh Prince, Seinfield etc.

Married With Children looks cheap and low production values and like its going to be another shit C-rate sitcom from the outside looking in, but the writing and acting make it hilarious.

If Will Smith's career wasn't getting so big at that point, the show may have gone on for another few more seasons :(. Although having everyone move to New York besides Will kind of made sure the show was over forever. A reunion episode would be great but with James Avery passing away (R.I.P), it becomes even less possible since he was vital to the shows plot.
I loved the 90s hip hop, African American culture, Princeton-Ivy league snobbiness, ditzy rich kids, and a street smart kid from West Philly. Show had so many personalities that made it so interesting. Even though I wish the show lasted longer than 6 years, it ended on a high note unlike some 90s shows that I felt were dragged out. I felt Friends post 2000 wasn't that great compared to all the 90s seasons.

It was the first sitcom on upstart Fox network in 1987. That's why it looked cheap.

And the answer is obviously the Wayans Bros for best sitcom. It hasn't aged one bit and has held up nicely over the years.

For a show that didn't get very high ratings in it's era, it sure has in syndication.

Seinfeld and Married With Children. There was a show I really loved, Get a Life with Chris Elliot, never took off but I thought it was funny, though it was a really goofy show. No love for the Larry Sanders Show?

It's gotta be seinfeld easily unless you count the simpsons. That show started a lot of the trends.

Fresh Prince, Married with Children, Fraiser, Friends would be in there for top 5 I'd say although i never liked fraiser (I really liked cheers though) or friends.

An unknown one around here that was also good is the adventures of lano and woodley, an australian show that was pretty funny.

Friends grew on me, the middle of Friends (season wise) was the best. The beginning few were meh and the last season or so was really meh.

Fresh Prince used to be on TV like every morning at 5-7am on some channels on Dish back in the day. I used to just record all them and watch them after school.

I'm surprised no one else mention The Wonder Years. It's still relatable to this day.

Also reading through the responses makes me believe the 90's were the best for sitcoms. I can't think I've followed any sitcoms other than the Simpsons in the last 15 years.

I tend to think of it more as an 80's sitcom, even though it ran from '88-'93.

It's weird to think of TWY as a sitcom for for me. When I think sitcom I imagine a 3 camera setup in front of live studio audiences, or at least a laugh track. TWY used a single camera and shot mostly on location. It was more comedy/drama than sitcom IMO.

Just as an example of how dominant a cultural force sitcoms were in the 90s, when I was in High School, tons of people used to come to my house on Thursday nights to watch Seinfeld and Friends. We'd play cards and sneak booze until the shows started. It feels so bizarre now.

Yeah, NBC's Thursday night was an absolute juggernaut in the 90s. They've been trying to capture that magic again ever since, with no luck. Seinfeld was such a beast that NBC offered the cast $5 million per episode to do at least one more season in '98-'99 (They had already been banking $1 million per).

Fresh Prince number 2.

It's weird I grew up watching black shows and hanging with a ton of blacks, hell, I still have a ton of black friends... but more and more when I'm by myself I tend to observe random black dudes in a negative way. I never used to do that. Now if I see a typical black dude with the sagged bball shorts and the long socks/jordans combo I'm lowkey disgusted. Even though I dress like that too a lot.

I'm starting to believe that races are meant to stay together. I now understand the minds of racists. You gotta understand a lot of these racist whites didn't grow up on Fresh Prince and didn't grow up with black friends. I did, I embrace the culture, and I STILL have a bit of racism in me, for some ungodly reason.

It's just nature.

It's just a different world. With so many more options, the chances to hit the zeitgeist like that, to have such a large chunk of the audience all on the same thing at once is just more and more unlikely than ever, and it gets more unlikely by the day.

The thing is, at what point does it segregate itself so much that things aren't profitable enough anymore to do with any sort of quality.

Where I grew up, there were a few black families and all of them were affluent. They were actually really chill and often invited all the people they knew in high school in the neighborhood we lived in to house parties at their house (never went but I've heard they were cray cray). Haven't seen him in years but he was extremely friendly and always wanted to hang out with people during the summer.

My parents worked in late 80s/90s NYC in a pretty dominant black neighborhood in a rough area in Queens and said they never thought of them as different. My mother enjoyed working with them and my father did too.

Where I went to college was surrounded by a predominantly black West Philly neighborhood. I will admit, I would act cautious sometimes if I see a group of big black men walking my way late at night and no one's on the street but that eventually fizzles out. Most people just say "sup, how you doing?" or just give you a simple nod. There was one time I wore a nice polo and jeans and unknowingly went to the block where my friend's birthday part was and walked into a block party with a ton of dudes drinking 40s on the porch and a car slowly turning the corner and the passengers staring at me (during my freshman year, it was considered one of the most dangerous blocks in the area. I think there were a few murders there in recent years at the time). No one really bothers you as long as you don't bother them. From that experience, I also stopped dressing that nicely when I know I'm going to those type of areas.

I learned more about the African American culture though and talked to a lot of them at the gym. It was chill for the most part, I would sometimes run into the guys randomly at bars and clubs around Philly and we would shake hands and all. I would say I became more comfortable with black people personally once I got to college. Heck, my best friend is from my undergrad and he's black.

See, that's the thing. I know everything about the culture. I spent a ton of my time in high school hanging out with wannabe gang members smoking blunts and playing 2k, all day. There's just a huge difference from the way I act around my white friends and around my black friends. And that difference is something I'm more attune to now, and I can't help but be biased towards my white brethren. We use the N word all the time, with the er. We'll throw out racist remarks like it's nothing. "he's just a dumb n***** lololol" but obviously never around one of our black friends. We'll act completely different.

If anything I'm disgusted at myself for being so fake. Yes, I'm an alpha male in the white community. But black dudes have animal strength and there's no intimidating them. You either fit in or get fed to the sharks, or you completely avoid them, which is what it looks like the direction I may be headed.

I'm just tired of the ignorance on their part. I'm tired of the poor grammar. I'm tired of the laziness. I see it every ****ing day. Maybe I should just stop trying to associate with these dudes?

I do admit I connect with them when sports are involved. Competition pulls the non-racist younger side of me out and brings me back to the days of playing every sport imaginable on the cul de sac with the homies.

So **** anyone who undermines the importance of sports.

All of you 15 year olds saying, "Fresh Prince" don't know what you're talking about. Just having it drilled into your head in syndication on Nick at Night in 2009 doesn't make it good.

It never even won an Emmy or a Golden Globe, or any relevant award.
Are you even serious? It's not relevant because it didn't win any awards? It's in syndication because it aged well.

Didn't shows like Murphy Brown, Designing Women and Empty Nest win awards in the 90s?

Seinfeld, easily. It changed the game and started so many trends.

Fresh Prince was good but it was basically the Will Smith Show. Will was so effortlessly funny and had gigantic charisma.

Frasier was an underrated show that I didn't appreciate until it went into syndication. It was really smartly written. It just took a little time to get through the stuffiness.
