I call the greatly contested defensive plays game winners / savers aswell... doesnt have to be a deflection, block, steal... just making the guy take a very hard/bad shot and miss... and Lebron had many of those, like for example in Game 6 2013 Finals after Ray Allen tied the game with 5 seconds left, Spurs took timeout and Parker had the ball Lebron was on him and made him miss/take a shot (which would have won the game) he didnt want at the buzzer which conclusively forced OT.

Yep... the Heat had looked so clearly like the lesser team up to that point in the game (and IMO series), which if you ask me, the Spurs WERE the better team. But everyone likes to conveniently sweep LBJ's 4th quarter under the rug due to the two turnovers and the Allen 3 (a three that was only made possible by LeBron hitting a three on the previous play)

LeBron played great defense on the final play of regulation, and all throughout that quarter he was making key stops. Some with great contests, others with momentum-swinging blocks like the stuff on Duncan in the middle of their rally. Final minute Spurs choke aside, it also can't be understated how impressive it is to make a 10-point comeback in one quarter against a team like the 2013 Spurs...

As a Nets fan (I can't find the video) I remember all too well Wade blocking VC in 2006 to end that series, as well as Pierce with the stuff on Lowry in Game 7 two years ago which was literally a series-winning defensive stop. Doesn't happen often.

This is my all-time favorite though... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GD8feepwrE

What makes it so epic is how nonchalantly Reggie was as he went in for that layup. He thought there was no way in the world that a play could be made there, and I really don't know why.

Gotta love plays like these. Defensive game-winners and possessions are generally far less talked about.

I deleted my post because I thought this was only Playoff Defensive Game-Winners but I agree. Plays like these get underrated but are equally just as important as Offensive Game-Winners.

Wade had stolen the ball from Vince to seal the Series.

Was that what it was? I just have that vision of Wade throwing the ball or going nuts right after they zoomed in on him, and I was just so angry because with the game-winners that Vince and Wade had been hitting the past couple seasons, I was going toe to toe with my Wade stan buddy talking about how Vince was more clutch. :lol

Nets did well against the Heat that year too, took 3/4 in the regular season, arguably should've won the 4th if not for a no-call at the end of the game, we won the first game, and then you guys were just like "ok, F this. We're not losing to a team that starts Jason Collins". :lol That, along with the Nets RS sweep of Miami a couple years ago, were shining examples of why you can never really factor in regular season results with any certainty.

Gilbert Arenas used to make defensive game-winners. I remember one on Kirk Hinrich in the playoffs.

He would try for them too. I remember a couple attempts at game winning blocks that he very nearly got, which based on defensive positions he should not have been in the neighborhood of.

These things don't make one "the best in the world" by any stretch, but they are underrated moments in a player's career.

Kobe does this kind of thing too. A block or steal or disruption at the right time can turn the tide of the game. Kobe will block dunks, knock the ball away going up, or make a timely double team that will mark a major shift in a ballgame. Of course... Kobe does coast on defense a lot of the time too (so does Lebron).
