View Full Version : Is Cristiano Ronaldo The Greatest Scorer in History?

For those that don't know....he just surpassed the great Raul as the leading scorer in club history. The club he plays for happens to be the best club in the world.
To be the leading scorer on the best club in the world pretty much makes you the greatest of all time.
Legend.

The best player on the planet playing on the best club won the CL and La Liga, last year.
That's like saying that Kobe Bryant is the greatest scorer in NBA history.

last time I flew with Turkish Airlines, it was stated in one of their on board magazines that Messi is the greatest scorer

Ronaldo: 501 goals - 753 appearances (30 years old)
Messi: 467 goals - 597 appearance (28 years old)
Ronaldo has 34 more goals in 156 more matches.
Ronaldo scores .67 goals a match, while Messi scores .78 goals a match.
Who's better? :oldlol:

To all my American brothers who don't watch soccer, I will try to explain to you guys what soccer fans and the world says about this player.....
Everyone in the world believes in 'era-specific' players. There will be guys that can't play in certain eras but everyone agrees Cristiano Ronaldo is ahead of his time. He's like a future player.
Here's the club's tribute to him

World Cup Goals matter most. I think it's safe to say Thomas Muller is the GOAT goalscorer.

Ronaldinho just quit on his team recently.
He had a falling out with the fans and they booed his ass to the point where he left.
He smiles, comes in, does a few tricks and leaves.
Zero goals in 8 games.

THis isnt the NBA! They played football the same in the 60s. Sure, right now they have more training, better nutrition and better coaches so Ronaldo is obviously better than what Pele would be if he time traveled to right now . But, put young Pele in our football system of today and he will grow up to be one of the GOATs again.
What matters the most is that, Pele, in his era, was the best scorer and he outshone everybody.

Wrong bozo. They used formations like 3-5-2 and 3-4-3 alot.
South American teams would regularly use suicidal formations with zero tactical organization like 2-2-6 or 2-0-8.
Teams would have guys like sweepers whose job it was to just stand in front of the keeper. Did they even offsides, bro?
The game has changed so much since the 60s. The 4-4-2 was considered a tactical innovation in the 60s.

Ronaldo hardly scored in his first 130 appearances, subbed in alot, freelance player... since then his goals per game % has skyrocketed, higher than Messi's with a higher total too, Messi has other areas, but Ronaldo is the GOAT goalscorer.
Yeah, its amazing how much more advanced defenses are nowadays... defenders look badly set up in alot of the older videos, silly looking and it wasn't just always due to Pele.

Maybe. He's the most complete scorer I've seen though. Long shots, headers, penalties and weak foot isn't an issue for him.

He has scored many spectacular goals, but nowadays most of his goals are tap-ins and "boring" goals. He's more of a cynical, unstoppable goal scoring machine now. Earlier in his career, when he played as more of a winger, he scored more spectacular goals from long shots and deep runs.
On this subject, I re-watched some of his goals from his career recently and it struck me how many crazy free kick goals he had in his first season at Real. He also had a bunch of great free kicks late in his United career. It feels as if he's barely scored any good free kick goals the last 3-4 seasons.

If you want to pick out a season of his most spectacular goals, look no further than 2012, 2013, 2014..
People with no clue about him shouldn't be coming in here to move BS myths like that around. Schnee von gestern.
The funniest thing about all this, Ronaldo has MORE goals from outside the box AND headers than penalties (respectively).
81 pens (90% success mark), 83 headers, 85 outside the box.
Something like that, I'll post the official/correct graphic in a minute.

0.77 GPA > 0.70 GPA.
CR wasn't a goalscoring figure in his early '04-'06 years, but he played more matches (while being a sub also) than Messi during those years.
If you want an accurate comparison, do from '07 on, both stepping into their prime and scoring goals, of course Messi was injured for some part of the 2008 season, not in their matchup though.

Just checked again, from 2004-2006 Ronaldo had 1 goal in 21 UCL games, so yeah, his average is on par if not better in context.
And from 2004-2006 he scored 27 goals in 137 matches (2002/2003 for Sporting 5 goals in 31 games)... his GPG's after that, regular minutes and a steady position, are GOAT. Unprecedented.

Thats not exactly the point. Ronaldo played 40 games in 2004, Messi 0. Ronaldo played 50 games in 2005, Messi 9... guess who's % is going to take a bigger hit.

what does that have to do with the early years messing up his goals % ? At least, fans usually don't care about that stuff, but I've noticed a trend with the American crowd (West-side, Chrome), who would rely on useless stuff like that.
