View Full Version : (Probably) Moving to Rhode Island

Myth

I have a conditional job offer that I pan to accept if it becomes an official job offer. I am so happy to get away from Arizona. I also love cities, so I'm excited to have super easy access to Providence and be only an hour from Boston (should be much easier to attend Celtics games than the 2+ hours I currently have to Suns games). I'm not too familiar with the east coast, but I am excited either way.

Good luck man. Going from Arizona to Rhode Island... you will need to go shopping for a whole new wardrobe because it will get cold as F there. Making friends shouldn't be hard, you're a good dude

He's not in the desert part of Arizona, he's in 7,000 ft Flagstaff. Pretty sure he has coats.

Are people still giving you bad looks Myth? You'd think with so many hispanics, the southwest would be less racist. Just last week I was shopping at a Toyota dealership and when we got to the finance application, the salesman asked if I worked in landscaping. So I guess all Mexicans that want to buy a truck are landscapers :lol

Dude Rhode Island is actually pretty sick. I've been there before. It's kinda like a small town Boston. The harbor at Providence is nice. I saw some pretty girls there too and had some great food at some local restaurants. I would say to an extent, the Rhode Island/Boston metro area are really underrated.

True its cold up there, bundle up OP. Boston/Rhode Island winters tend to be even harsher than NY winters.

We got bad looks in some areas. I think the Mexicans are discriminated more than anybody in Arizona. They are so concerned about their borders and are convinced that Mexicans are murderers and rapists, like Trump says.

And you are also right about the Flagstaff part.

Yeah, we aren't very popular haha. Well I hope RI treats you both well. There's a couple cool posters on here that are from there so you should get some good recommended places to visit. I myselfhave been thinking of moving to Portland but am held back by the lack of employment opportunities.

DO IT!

Rhode Island is so beautiful. There is so much to see and do outside. You're always within a stone's throw of someplace memorable.

I long for New England all the time. Hopefully I'll be back there within 5 years.

Certainly get the hell out of Arizona. If you're going to be in the Southwest, at least be somewhere interesting (New Mexico)

If there is one place in America that still has traces of racism, it's certainly New England. This is where Henry Louis Gates Jr. was arrested for "breaking in" to his own home.

In the South most "racism" is really something else. People who aren't dressed respectably are viewed with more distrust here. White or black. If you're in a suit or a turtleneck, nobody's going to call the cops on you here.

Being a straight white male this isn't high on my radar, but the south really is much more racially comfortable, on the whole, than the north. (In the midatlantic region, race barely even exists for people, in my experience.)

I disagree with that. I'm not white and I remember being stared at down in the Carolinas at a gas station. I don't run into that at all where I grew up. I find NE/Rhode Island fine for race. Boston is an extremely diverse city. Ton of Asians, whites, and I believe most of south Boston is Black. I've heard down south, cities are even more segregated by race and class.

Can't speak for the Carolinas. (I think Kblaze resides there though.)

Cities are always different. I live in Louisville which is pretty diverse. But if you look at the rest of KY on an electoral map it's all red, only Jefferson County where Louisville is is blue. Cities are 80% immune to geography. I'm thinking of ordinary residential neighborhoods and whatnot.

Of course all I have is my experience to go on, and some testimony. The experience of many could be different and I could be wrong.

But Boston is not a good predictor of what Rhode Island will be like, or someplace else in Massachusetts. And I have heard plenty about Boston from those who have a different experience.

Providence is a great city. An old fashioned mob town, which means it's got great food. It's one of the rare cities that gives you the metropolitan feel without being overwhelmed.

It also has a weird semi legal prostitution policy, which lends itself to a nice seedier side of town.

Me you and J$ can meet up at the Indian casinos.

I plan on going to Celtics games a few times a year. Heck, if I could make 4 2-hour trips to Phoenix games this year in the f*cking heat, I could make 1-hour trips to Celtics games. I'm sure I'll spend some time downtown and catching concerts and other events as well. My gf is a Patriots fan, so we'll likely go to at least 1 game a year for that.

Hell, I'll also make it to New York for Knicks/Nets games, and potentially Phil and Washington games.

Federal Hill is the place to eat and no mistake.

Andino's, Mediterraneo and Cassarino's are first-class Italian joints. Sicilia's Stuffed Pizzas are great and I have always maintained that Caserta Pizzeria makes the 2nd best pizza I've ever had (Frank Pepe's in New Haven, CT being #1). Top it off with coffee and cannoli at Dolce Vita. The mob has even let first-class Mexican and Japanese places on Atwells now.

Yeah, Paddy's Lounge. We reserved space there a few years ago the day after my cousin's wedding. It is a pain in the ass to even get sand space near there without going obnoxiously early. But it is cool when you can make it work.

The weather has been fine. I hear it was rough the year before, but the snow hasn't shut much down when it does come. They are good about salting roads and getting plows out early.

Best food in America. Have fun.

Unrelated note to this thread, being from Texas Rhode Island is just one of those states you learned from grade school geography and would just forget. Never though I would actually visit which I did when my bro was working at Brown. Narrangansett beer is the one of the worst beers I've ever had. Very chill city.
I'm back from the trip. It was short but sweet.

I'm not a big beer guy, so I never had the Narrangensett beer, but I think I've seen it.

Yeah, I like Providence a lot. It is a good city to live near, despite not being a great touristy place. You can get in and out easily without hassle for going to the bar scene with friends at night. Boston for example has more events to go to, but would be a pain to just deal with the traffic for a weekend with no plans. If I lived in Boston, I doubt I would travel to Providence much because it doesn't offer anything unique, thus every week is simply in Boston. By living in Providence, Boston is a more rare treat, while Providence is better for the weekly stuff. However, I'd probably get season tickets for Celtics if I lived closer.

Regular old Gansett lager is...yeah, very terrible. They make a winter seasonal coffee milk stout that's at least palatable.

Yeah, this winter has been a breeze compared to the horseshit that got dumped on us last year with that 100+ inches of snow in some places; that was a historically bad winter. Hoping for a good, long hot summer this year.

I was on the receiving end of a motorboat from Jenna Jameson's brand new tits on my 18th birthday during my freshman year...and that happened at the Cadillac right before she blew up. :lol She remains the only porn star I actually know by stage name.

Also, I still call the Dunk the Providence Civic Center. Its a shame my #9 seed Friars aren't playing on their home floor.
