I came across this episode about this American Life episode: 545: If You Don't Have Anything Nice to Say, SAY IT IN ALL CAPS (http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/545/if-you-dont-have-anything-nice-to-say-say-it-in-all-caps)
Writer Lindy West has been harassed by hundreds of trolls online. But only one ever apologized for his remarks. Lindy began to wonder, could he explain why trolls choose to be so cruel?
This woman spoke to the guy who trolled her by creating a fake Twitter account in the name her recently deceased father and sent her messages. He confesses that he did it because at the time he hated his body and his self and was super pissed off she seemed happy even though she is fat.

Now she's gonna take this troll's reason and generalize it towards everybody.
There is something fundamentally wrong if you're constantly trolling. It's bullying and/or attention-whoring on anonymous strangers. That's not a normal thing to do. By it's definition there has to be something wrong with the person doing it if it's constant.
People here spend time making alternate personalities to rep their own opinions and win arguments with strangers. It's entertaining but those people are weird.

I don't get how people can get upset from some random comments some d-bag on the internet posted. If I go in a bathroom stall and see the childish scribbles like "Your mom likes dick!" would I get personally offended?

Bathroom scribble is not aimed at you personally. This writer on the other hand was targeted by the trolls personally. She would be better off if she could just shrug it off but we've seen a million examples that show us most people aren't wired that way.

I obviously haven't read the article and sending personal emails about your dead parent is obviously unacceptable. My apologies.

Yeah, it's something that is fairly obvious, but listening to them talk about it and hearing him remember what he had done (it was two years before we talked) is something again. There's a lot of interesting parts if you listen to the whole show.
