Charlotte Hornets forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist will undergo shoulder surgery and likely miss the entire season, a league source told Yahoo Sports.

Kidd-Gilchrist is expected to miss six months with the injury, which wouldn't allow for a possible return until the final weeks of the season in April. It leaves little hope that Kidd-Gilchrist can return to the lineup this season.

Kidd-Gilchrist suffered a separated right shoulder in Saturday’s preseason victory over Orlando, and an MRI on Monday in Charlotte revealed the need for surgery.

Kidd-Gilchrist, 22, signed a four-year, $52 million contract extension in September.

For the Hornets and coach Steve Clifford, the loss of Kidd-Gilchrist is a significant blow to a revamped roster with a real hope of returning to the playoffs. Kidd-Gilchrist is the Hornets’ best perimeter defender and a developing offensive player.
The loss of Kidd-Gilchrist will make the acquisitions of Nic Batum and Jeremy Lamb even more important for the Hornets.

Kidd-Gilchrist, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft, has developed into a cornerstone player for the Hornets along with center Al Jefferson and guard Kemba Walker.

Kidd-Gilchrist had dramatically improved his offensive game with a revamped jump shot and was one of the team’s most important defensive players. In his third NBA season, Kidd-Gilchrist averaged 10.9 points and 7.6 rebounds in 55 games for Charlotte last season.

No worries for Charlotte because Jeremy Lamb is there to save the day.

If you do the math he'll miss most of the season!

what a shame. all that work hes been putting into this shot, too.

Kaminsky fans should be stoked, though. He's going to get at least 25% more minutes than he would have had MKG stayed healthy.

Just updated the OP. He's likely to miss the rest of the season.

Only way he comes back is if Charlotte is in the playoffs by then, which doesn't seem very likely when I look at projected East teams this off season.

I dare say it's a shoulder reconstruction, re-attaching the labrum and repairing torn ligaments.
Generally takes about 6 months to regain full strength in the shoulder, although in 2 months pictures will appear of him at training on Hornets instagram, and there will he some media hype, but he won't play this season.

That's such an unfortunate injury. MKG seems like such a good dude and it's been well-documented how much he's worked to improve his game. He's their most important 2-way player. They have Batum, but I think Charlotte is lotto-bound. Offense won't be good enough to make up for the bad D.

Such a shame. Kid was a top 10 DPOY vote finisher this year and his only glaring weakness in his game is his offensive game. This injury sets him back from development. Wasn't worth a top 2 pick but would have been a great pickup in the lottery in the year he got drafted. Hopefully he never gets labeled as a bust but I think he will.
