Cool game so far, great pace... Real Madrid nowadays plays a lot like an NBA Team.

Doncic 16 years old on the court getting good minutes.
Sergio Rodriguez just trashing Isaiah Thomas and Marcus Smart.

Olynik playing in Europe would be so great, fundamentally sound.

Boston pretty much destroyed Euroleagues best (game wasn't even close in the second half).

The Celtics have a bright future though, man. A lot of players who do the same thing, but they're well coached and Isaiah Thomas is a BEAST. Its crazy that he's only 5'9" and doing the shit he does out there.

They had two high school players on the floor. That's not the "Euroleague's best".

They did not even play with what are probably their two best players either, and what is certainly their best player.

They already lost last week to a team from Brazil in the Intercontinental Cup, and got blown out to a team from Spain in the Spanish Supercup.

It's pretty obvious that their coach is not taking any of these preseason games serious.

They didn't even run any sets. They just played street ball the entire game.

Yes, they got blown out, but don't PRETEND that they even tried to play a real game, BECAUSE THEY DID NOT.

And I'm honestly not sure why they didn't. But I guess they just figured with their probably two best players injured that there was no point, especially since they had terrible results in the last week.

They still could have at least run some plays though.

It was an insulting display to the Euroleague by them.

Rudy Fernandez isn't making THAT big of a difference. Not only that, but the Celtics had their share of injuries themselves (Evan Turner and Amir Johnson)

Also...by Euroleagues best, I mean the defending champions. Boston played ordinary basketball and still crushed them.

It was embarrassing that Lasso put two high school sophomores on the court. And if by "playing like an NBA team these days", you mean that they never ran a play the whole game....then yeah I guess so.

That was a ridiculous display by Lasso.

Benched Fernandez and Taylor, with minor injuries, then played high school sophomores.......did not run any plays.

And then to top if off the idiot NBATV announcer (I'm not sure if you watched that broadcast or not), lied and claimed they were not using NBA rules, and claimed it was a FIBA court.

Unbelievable amount of bullshit.

The only thing I can think is the NBA threw a huge fit after Fenerbahce won that game in the USA.

Rudy Fernandez and Jeff Taylor, basically their two best all-around overall players (Rudy is without any doubt at all by 100% their best player - and no matter what bullshit any NBATV announcer says that is a fact), were benched by coach's decision, and instead two high school sophomores were played.

STOP TROLLING.

Real never even ran a play until about the 40 minute mark of the game even.

They clearly had no attempt to win the game, which was a bit bizarre.

Laso just said in this postgame conference on NBA TV, that he ran something called "quick hitter". I personally saw them run a few Side pick N rolls along with a couple box set plays.

And again, Boston also missed some of their key/best players, yet still made quick of the "Euroleague Champions"

Exactly. Even if they thought, OK, without Rudy and Taylor we can't win this game.........................

They still could have at least tried.

I don't get it. Loser mentality.

But that is the thing with Real Madrid. They have always had a loser's mentality. It's the thing they have always been known for. They have been known for being losers for like 20 years.

They are the opposite mentality actually of Barca, which of course wanted to go after the Lakers.

Real have always been labeled as the biggest losers of Europe in the last 20 years, and their coach has had the label of maybe being the biggest joke in Europe.

This game shows exactly why. I mean they just treated it like, hey, an NBA team is at our city, let's just roll over and die.

Quite pathetic, and I really can't remember seeing that from any good Euroleague team before.

The fact that he actually put high school sophomores in the game was just astonishing to me. And then how the NBATV announcers found a way to spin that, like, "this guy is so amazing, he's like the next Rubio".

Yeah, sure, high school sophomores should actually be in games with NBA players.

They didn't run jack shit other than let Llull, Carroll, and Rodriguez just dribble and shoot and do whatever the hell they wanted to with the ball, and take whatever shot they wanted to the whole game.

Those 3 played the JJ Barea offense for 40 minutes.

That's the set play Laso was referring to. Quit being a moron. They also didn't even attempt to play any defense. Not that they are a great defensive team or anything. But they do have some guys that can D up, like Reyes, Carroll, Nocioni, Ayon......not one bit of D the whole game was played.

That's probably easily the single poorest effort that team ever gave in any game.

And they were complaining about the refs in the Intercontinentcal Cup. Hell, they actually tried in that one and still it was competitive for 2 games.

Funny thing is, you claim that Euroleague teams "only exclusively always 100% of the time play zone defense".

It's so odd, because when they play NBA teams, they never play zone defense. Well, maybe 1 or 2 plays in an entire game.

Yet you keep on and on with this bullshit about how they ONLY play zone defense in Euroleague.

You must be about 12 years old.

Because only someone that age would think that. You know, only someone that plays in that level of basketball.

The real questions are, why did Pablo Laso, the coach of Real Madrid, feel the need to bench Rudy Fernandez and Jeff Taylor, and replace them in the lineup with two high school sophomores (players from the youth team), after Fenerbache had just beaten the Brooklyn Nets? And why did Real not run anything even remotely resembling their normal sets for the entire game? Is it coincidence this happened right after Fener beat an NBA team in the USA? Somehow, I don't really think it is.

Here is a jackass that actually thinks that is how Real Madrid normally plays, letting Jaycee Carroll for example, just dribble the ball around for 15 to 20 seconds, and then jack up a contested 25 footer, and that it's usual for an elite Euroleague team to play 16 year olds....

I won't put this kind of shenanigans on Silver, but on Stern. He was at the game in Milan. I don't know if he was at this game in Madrid. But he was at the game in Milan, and I saw him bitching and complaining about everything there, as usual, after the Nets lost to Fenerbahce.

WTF "plays" asshole?

They ran no plays of any kind that team has ran ever since the coach, or any of the guards that play on the team, have actually been on the team.

Anyone that knows the team, knows that.

As others commenting in this thread have already pointed out, the team was absolutely unrecognizable. Maybe, this was part of some kind of concession that Real's President made to the NBA as part of his current proposal that he has filed for them to join the NBA.

An ultimate ass kissing of letting them get totally humiliated, and so in his mind then the NBA might let them join the NBA. So the coach had the orders to make it happen.

I don't know. But several other posters already said in the thread that Real Madrid team was unlike anything anyone has ever seen in the last 5 or 6 years.

It was actually an embarrassment.

I'm not saying they didn't play hard. Because they did play hard. The players tried (on offense, NOT on defense at all though), within the context of what their game assignment was.

But they basically were nonetheless obviously told to tank the game, as in just play street ball for 40 minutes, but play hard while doing it, and that's what they did.

You can't play street ball for 40 minutes against Brad Stevens, and against an NBA team that has the objective of not wanting to lose to the Euroleague champions and not be humiliated.

The fact that people here are actually arguing that any elite Euroleague team would normally play like that (street ball) for 40 minutes, not to mention 16 year olds being played as well, just shows the level of ludicrous trolling that exists here.

In an actual Euroleague game, even if it was the worst team in the league, a street balling display would usually get a player benched almost immediately.

And no one is playing 16 year old kids.

Yet we have clowns here claiming this is the absolute norm of how Real Madrid would always play, and even implying or straight out saying this is how they would have won a championship last year.

Getting 5 minutes down 30 or getting 15 minutes like Doncic has been playing in 2nd and 3rd quarters.

It reminds of the moron clown announcer on the NBATV broadcast. I watched that.

First they claimed this,

"These games remember are not played under NBA rules. They are played under FIBA rules, to help the international team, so the court is smaller. It's shorter and narrower."

Yeah, except the games the NBA and Euroleague play against each other are all played under NBA rules only. They stopped playing the mixed rules games years ago. I wonder if that bullshit lie also has to do with Stern showing up in Milan, pushing his influence to NBATV? Can't have Fener beat an NBA team in the USA I guess?

So then right after that though, a few minutes later.......

The same moron announcer got caught in his own lies, when he said this....

"Sergio Rodriguez is not known for his outside shot, you know he can't really shoot the 3." Which is funny of course, because he's probably most known for his 3 point shooting ability............

Then this gem of wisdom and insight came,

"Yeah, he just hit a 3 point pointer, but that is only his first 3 pointer in the game. He's now just 1 for 7 in the game. Of course that's easily explainable, because the NBA court, which we are using in this game, has the further 3 point line than the European court, and the Real players are not used to the further 3 point line, and it's a bit out of their shooting range."

First, as if a 3 point shot, that is just half a step further, would be "out of their shooting range".......oh, so professional players can't hit a shot that's half a step further away, OK, that makes sense.

Second, he played for years in the NBA before, so what? He just somehow forgot how to shoot from that distance anyway?

Third, a few minutes earlier, he claimed that they were using the FIBA court, to make the game easier for the Real Madrid, and they were not playing under NBA rules (even though they actually were), and so that the court was smaller, shorter, narrower, and then just a few minutes later, he claimed they were using the NBA court, when the subject of the NBA 3 point line distance came up, and the fact that they were using the NBA 3 point line distance...........

Caught in their own lies, trying to twist and manipulate what people watching the game think - that "it is played under FIBA rules".......oh look, even under FIBA rules an NBA team won.

No end to their bullshit.

The fact that the NBA brought in a brand new and special court just for the game, you know, an NBA dimensions court, just for the game, which anyone and everyone can compare to Real's normal court and see that it was a DIFFERENT COURT, and would PROVE that was a lie they were telling, was apparently of no consequence at all to them.

Anyone could see that they brought in a totally new and different court for both the games in Madrid and Milan and could compare the courts and see that they are entirely different courts and that they lied in saying they were FIBA courts.

All of this only proves what I have said here all along, that the NBA goes out of its way to intentionally lie about the Euroleague, in order to make it seem worse. And you can't say it is not the NBA doing this, when it is NBATV behind that.

Damn if Real play like that in their regular season they might get relegated from Euroleague.

Well, it depends on the definition of burn.
Getting 5 minutes down 30 or getting 15 minutes like Doncic has been playing in 2nd and 3rd quarters.

But i get what you are saying, we normally try to put potential on the court early.. but it's not that common.

Doncic was getting playing time only against bad teams in the Spanish League, that Real Madrid is guaranteed to beat every single game. What you describe from above. Garbage time minutes against scrub teams in the ACB.

He played a grand total of 0 minutes in the Euroleague.

This is a discussion about the Euroleague, not the Spanish League. Two completely different levels and especially two completely different scenarios for a big club like Real.

Same goes for Radoncic.

Neither Radoncic, nor Doncic have ever played a single minute in the Euroleague, and we have clowns here like Rooster and catch24 acting like they were stars on the team that won the Euroleague last year.

They can't get relegated from Euroleague. They have a guaranteed place every season.

So, let's assume Rudy Fernandez is as important as Amir Johnson. Where are the other 15 points coming from? Never mind the fact the Celtics played their rookies 12 minutes+, where they won't see burn in meaningful games in the regular season...

Real Madrid played 3 high school players.

Doncic
Radoncic
Thiago

Let me repeat that, THREE HIGH SCHOOL PLAYERS.

WTF is your point?

Has to be embarrassing for the El for their champ to get trashed like that on their home floor to boot. Yes, it's the pre-season and all but you want to at least make it respectable against a fringe playoff team in Boston.

Real is trying to gain entry into the NBA and this effort can't help their cause. For this idea to work, the NBA will need to accept, not just 1 team, but a slew of NBA ready teams from Greece, Spain, Italy to build a European Conference, not just a division. I believe this could be reality one day, and this should be pretty exciting what with collisions of basketball philosophies and worlds colliding .

Make it happen, Silver.

The game had a heavy preseason vibe; both teams were running super basic offense.

Can't wait to see regular season Isaiah Thomas. He's smartly not turning the jets on in preseason. Our team is built to last.

Also our players are noticeably stronger--a testament to our strength and conditioning coach Bryan Doo.
