Deep Purple and the Cars.
I would say Chicago too but only if they excluded their 80s pop ballads era.

I guess the definition of rock n roll is taken loosely?

You do know Rock & Roll and Rock are different right? Rock & Roll is like the top of the food chain and everything splinters off from there. Doo-Wop, Soul, Rock.
I guess you can say Rock & Roll is basically popular music from the 1950s' on. Everyone from Hank Ballard & the Midnighters t Roy Obison were considered Rock & Roll stars in the 1950s. James Brown was even billed as a Rock & Roller early on. It wasn't until the mid 60s were things started to really get separated and different

I'd be inclined to disagree.
When people say rock and roll, the instant thought to me is those abrasive, very distinctly black, groups of the 50s and early 60s. And of course the white groups that emulated that same style with varying success. the music is surprisingly chaotic when you stop and think about it.
look at the beatles discography and you can make a clear demarcation between their early days when they were very much a part of that scene and their later work when music in general moved on from that vibe, but obviously elements of it endure to this day.

N.W.A.
Smiths
Janet Jackson
NIN
Cheap Trick
Deep Purple
The Spinners
Would be my vote.
How long can they leave Joy Division/ New Order off the ballad? They are as important to indie music as the Rolling Stones are to rock and roll.

This exactly. When people learn the real definition of what rock n roll is the stupid comments like 'that artist isn't rock n roll' will cease.

Yeah, no matter how far you stretch the definition of rock n roll, NWA is not a rock and roll band.

They're not a band, but they're rock and roll.

This. If The Smiths make it in maybe it will open the door to other Manchester bands (Buzzcocks, Joy Division, Tears For Fears, O.M.D.)

Wow, only Cheap Trick, Chicago, Deep Purple, N.W.A and Steve Miller made the cut. A lot of snubs.
It's really hard to figure out the what the hall looks for year in and year out.

Gonna be weird in 20 years when they have no choice but to nominate acts like Papa Roach, Taking Back Sunday, and Solja Boy.

Everyone doesn't make the list. Do you know someone of Barry White's stature has never even made the ballot, sad.

Those are artists that had a more significant impact in their style/genre than the rest (give or take).
Naturally, all the artists mentioned deserve a shot, but if we were to judge them on the criteria I mentioned above, the artists I mentioned go first.
Next up (if it's 7), I would say Smiths (although I really don't like them) and JBs.
