Have you ever sang when you were alone and thought, "wow, me, I have a beautiful voice!". Then you thought for yourself, hmm, I should record myself. And then you do, and then you hear yourself singing. And you be like, omg? why do I sound like a crackhead?
Terrible feeling.:(

I think that is pretty common.

It's happened to all of us at some point. We go through life secure in the knowledge that our voice sounds like distilled sex, until one day some absolute bastard pulls out a recorder and captures our smooth, honey-dripping Barry White sounds on tape. But man, are you in for a surprise: When played back, that sweet, sweet voice of yours sounds like something very different, and that something is pure, distilled ass.
The pitch is wrong. The tone is wrong. If you're a dude, your voice sounds way higher than you ever expected. If you're a lady, your lush soprano suddenly grows a beard and twists into a deep-pitched imitation of itself.
Now, your first instinct may be to burn down the electronics store so no one can ever hear that blasphemy again. However, we advise against it -- that shit is actually your real voice, while the thing you hear in your head whenever you speak is the autotuned version only you hear. We hear our own voices because sound waves travel up from the vocal cords and vibrate our ear drums. However, the vibrations don't stop there; they rattle through our skulls, echoing about and distorting the sound in a way that we alone perceive.
But why do we invariably think our recorded voices suck monkey balls compared to what we hear when we speak? Like most things involving humans, it comes down to who we want to bone. Men prefer women with higher voices, and women prefer men with deeper voices. Deep pitches are attributed to bigger bodies, and we as a society have deemed big men to be the best mates. Higher pitches, on the other hand, give us the sense of small bodies, and again, humanity as a whole tends to feel women should be smaller than men. Therefore, when a guy talks, he hears his voice boom through his skull like a subwoofer in the back of a beat up Bonneville. Women's voices are high and feminine in their own ears, and all is well in the world.
When we hear it through a recording, we realize how far off our real voice is from the sexy ideal and can nervously feel our reproductive organs start to shrivel away with every word.

Yes, I have done that. I thought I could really sing. It was cringe worthy when I heard myself.

singing is funny because it can be bad in two ways
physically maybe you aren't relaxed enough or you have short breath or rasp so it doesn't come out right... mentally maybe you just haven't practised hitting the notes...
yet in spite of that, its recognized that everybody can sing, and furthermore everybody can become a good singer if they work on it. scales aren't really very challenging, it's just tough because there are so many variations.
if you have bad form its really easy to come out pitchy
its worth improving in your free time though, and not very difficult
whatever song you feel like singing, figure out its key note -- just pick one and chances are you'll pick the right one, the one that sounds strongest and stands out from all the rest
sing the major or minor scale up and down a few times
then return to the song and giv'r
don't fret over how it sounds, keep it slow and quiet and don't strain your voice
pay very close attention to the shape your throat makes, eventually you will know exactly which way and by how much to shift your throat and create a new tone along the scale... it gets fun especially if you have ocd and insist on getting everyone JUST SO :lol
i never realized how therapeutic singing is if you don't take it seriously but still try to do it well
you can get lost in a melody for a very long time, even the most familiar song you've been listening to your whole life

The voice in our head
The voice we hear when we talk
The voice we hear on play back

the greatest form of torture is listening to a recording of your voice.
I was told I could sing, but when I hear myself sing, it sounds awful.
My brother tried to be a singer, and he is awful. Like, ****ing horrid. But the girls tell him he can sing to make him feel better I guess.
Dude even went to an open mic night and posted it on FB, and it was cringe worthy. I felt bad.

Dudes have got to learn that only like 1% of the population has any sort of actual talent, if that much. The rest are just worker ants who from time to time will delude themselves into thinking they're part of that 1%.
But they're not. And never will be. Sorry, that's just how it is.

There's plenty of ugly, interchangeable pieces of shit on this planet (and I'm sure in other planets/galaxies in other parts of the Universe).
There's nothing worse than an untalented person who thinks they're talented. Absolutely cringe worthy shit. It hurts my soul to see them try something they clearly have no skill in.
If you'd like, I can give you an honest, professional assessment of your potential and talent as a crooner. PM me a recording and I'll give you my analysis, free of charge.
