There's a reason the stats show Lebron lowering the assist capacity of his team - starting fives normally have only 1 ball-dominant, low-assisted player that teammates rarely throw assists to - the point guard.. But Lebron's point guard style from the forward position adds a 2nd low-assisted player that teammates can't throw assists to - he turns a normally high assisted forward position into a low assisted one, which lowers the assist capacity of the team relative to other teams whose forwards are highly-assisted.. Not surprisingly, Lebron's presence as an additional, low-assisted player didn't materially improve the assist frequency (http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?t=385446) of his Heat and Cavs teams.. Otoh, MJ was a highly-assisted, off-ball player, so his presence significantly increased the assist frequency of his teams, as the data linked above shows.

Not surprisingly, Lebron's presence as an extra point guard significantly reduces the APG and assist % (http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?t=385841) of teammates, while their assisted rate increases - this proves Lebron's presence as an extra point guard turns teammates from playmakers into play-finishers, thus preventing the kind of equal-opportunity offenses that Bird's Celtics, the Mavs, Spurs, Warriors, and 90's Bulls used (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIY_4vIxGEE&t=23m40s), where all 5 guys share the playmaking duties - since Lebron prevents the best brand of basketball, various equal or less-talented teams have pulled upsets by playing a better brand of basketball (2009, 2011, 2014)..

Ultimately, Lebron's stats lack integrity because he accumulates them at the expense of teammates.. His stat accumulation is also helped by employing a stat-friendly, easily-solvable, playground style, rather than trying to win.. His stat-friendly style is far less impressive than the superior, nuanced skill that MJ needed to achieve stats within an equal-opportunity offense that can actually win.

LeBron James finished the 2015 NBA Finals with averages of 35.8 points, 13.3 rebounds, and 8.8 assists per game.

LeBron James is the first player in NBA Finals history to lead both teams in points, assists and rebounds for the entire series.

Without James on the floor, Cleveland’s field goal percentage dropped for 40% to 17%, and it’s offensive efficiency fell from 97.3 to 50.9.

If you were to take James’s talent rating (6.6) and replace it with that of the league-average player (0.0), the Cavaliers’s talent rating would dwindle to -0.1. So what the King ended up doing was carrying one of the three-worst supporting casts in NBA history to within two games of a championship. Of course, what we forgot to mention was that FiveThirtyEight also determined that these Golden State Warriors finished the year with the second-highest peak Elo Rating (1822) in NBA history and third-highest Composite Elo Rating of all time (1796), making them one of the best basketball teams ever. And what James did against them remarkable.

There's an ESPN article (http://stats.nba.com/featured/sportvu_finals_game6_2015_06_17.html?ls=iref:nba:s pecials) showing that in Game 6, Lebron shot the ball on pnr's 42% of the time, compared to 8% for Curry... This occurred because Curry passed to Draymond Green and Iggy 77% of the time either of them screened, compared to 0% for Tristan and 15% for Mosgov when they screened Lebron.. Again, Tristan and Mosgov shot FAR better than Lebron, but the pnr stats show Lebron passed up their higher efficiency to shoot himself at much lower efficiency.. :confusedshrug:

It's a statistical fact (shown above) that Lebron turns teammates from playmakers (higher apg, lower assisted rate) into play-finishers (lower apg, higher assisted rate)... So his teammates have a much tougher transition when he goes to the bench - they have to become playmakers all of a sudden after being accustomed to play-finishing while Lebron dominates the ball.

Otoh, truly great basketball players don't reduce the APG of teammates by being ball-dominant - guys like Bird, MJ and Curry had the skill to spend more time off-ball, thus allowing teammates to retain their playmaking duties.

Allowing teammates to be playmakers helps the team win more because when Bird, MJ or Curry go to the bench, their teammates were already playmaking, so they don't have to make this big transition from play-finisher to playmaker like Lebron's teammates must do..

Assuming he had the touch to make it without banking, this is the kind of shot Lebron would need to live off in previous eras to be a 28-30 ppg scorer.. Due to the lack of 3-point shooting/spacing to draw defenders out of the paint, the paints were much more congested... Guys couldn't get all the way to the rim and needed to pull-up for midrange - this forced all the 25+ ppg scorers in previous eras to have that needed midrange touch:

There's not really a reasonable argument to put Hakeem over Lebron. Dream's playoff resume isn't close to Lebrons. The rest you can make an argument on rings, but you're really making a stretch given outside of kareem (who I'd never open the debate up for) lebron has more MVP's, has better stats (regular season and playoffs), and honestly the argments against are pretty weak.
