View Full Version : Blake Griffin: Building a jumper from scratch

Let's be real here ISH, has there ever been a more impressive crafting and reworking of a jumper in the history of the NBA than what we've seen from Blake?

Take a look at the highlights from tonight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FOljLbkXVc

It's so technically sound now. He's got the stepback, the pull-up, and the standstill.

His rookie year? That shit was atrocious. The form, the result, everything.

I'm trying to think of another player that's rebuilt a jumpshot like BG has and I really can't. Maybe y'all can shed some light on players from the past.

That's actually a good one. His jumper was broke his rookie year too. Not as broke as Blake's, but it wasn't good.

Theres a reason he shoots jumpshots, his wingspan is too short to go inside vs Ibaka, Whiteside, Jordan etc

Theyre all the same size, but Blakes t-rex arms make him an easy target, hence the jump shots

He def has a weak NBA wingspan, but hes certainly shorter than Whiteside and Jordan by at least a good 2 inches.

Notice how Blake does a lot of "throw down dunks"?

Where his hand doesnt touch the rim, but he dunks from far away?

Its because he can't reach the rim, arms are too short

Anthony Davis did that in one season, and the season after he added a three point shot.

Watch his jumper from his 2nd season and then his 3rd..

Let's get back to the topic at hand here. Who else in the history of the league has crazily re-crafted their jumper?

Karl Malone maybe? What was his jumper like his rookie year?

AD has no doubt improved his shot, but he's always had a fairly smooth delivery. Even in college. But yeah he's made a very quick improvement.

remember when he used to release it on the way down?

it was ugly last year but pretty effective, if he can develop into an elite shooter, shit, look out, there's an MVP in his future.

Crazily recrafted? Im not sure blake did it. His jumper still looks stiff and unreliable. Im living happily, with him shooting those step backs, as an opposing teams coach.

Props to him. I'd like to see more players apply themselves this way.

Shooting comes more naturally to some players than others. I don't think Rondo and Wall's lack of jumpers is entirely due to bad work ethic and Curry simply works harder than everyone else.

I bet Crawford and Reggie Jackson hardly practice at all. They just have a soft touch naturally.

But I have a feeling Rondo, Wall, etc. think "I'm really good without a jumper, I don't really need to work on this." I don't think either player will be good in his 30s if they don't add it, and they would have waayy better primes if they got it sooner rather than later.

As for Griffin, yes his arms aren't very long, but his quickness, strength, and ballhandling are unreal for his size. Barkley had a height/length disadvantage against everyone he went against, but he also had a dominant mentality. I'd like to see more of that from Griffin.

Kidd is proof that anyone can do it. He had terrible hands for shooting, at every point in his career; but he hit his free throws, and towards the end of his career became an ace spot-up 3pt shooter. He had a personal shooting coach and everything I believed. Recognized that the game and his own age required developing an untapped ability, and went and did it. Rondo and Wall need to follow suit. I don't want them shooting 3s, but I don't want them so bad at it that guys are sagging 6 feet off them.

He's improved but let's not go overboard. He has teased us plenty of times with stretches of good shooting but he's never been consistent where it's a weapon. Teams still want him to shoot it rather than give him the drive. And he still goes backwards on his shot, which is the opposite of what you should be doing on your jumpers. But hopefully, you are right. But I don't think he'll ever have Malone or KG type accuracy from mid-range.

It's not the most impressive in NBA history or anything like that but Griffin definitely has developed a respectable jumpshot. That was one of the biggest flags he had coming out. That and being "soft." He's going to be a good player for another 10 years in the league.

Trex arms Blake Griffin also usually dunks while comitting a huge offensive foul with his off hand. Quite sad that refs dont call it, blatant rig.

If Kidd had the jumpshot he had later in his career on the Nets, he may have won that 2002 MVP that some people felt he deserved. To take the Nets from the bottom to the top without a jumpshot but being the ideal PG in nearly every other way is incredible.

I agree, if Kidd can do it. Anyone can do it. He used to be a terrible shooter... even in his prime on those early 2000 Nets teams.

Beats me. How does a coach in AAU or whatever not tell him, "Hey kid, you're doing that completely wrong." :lol

I need some recent MKG highlights now to see his current jumper.

His shooting mechanics look the same to me. He still jumps pretty high and has to use too much strength to bring the ball high and release it. I think this is one of the reason he had problems making the shots late into the playoff games. Keeping consistency with this type of shooting is very difficult when you're exhausted.

He had a great night though and I hope he keeps the consistency as the season continues.
