HOUSTON, Texas -- Members of a marching band in Texas could be suspended over a fruit basket school administrators say was racist.

KTRK reports that it's tradition for members of the Atascocita High School band to exchange gifts with members of the rival bands on the field before varsity football games. The gifts are meant to promote good sportsmanship.

Friday's gift, presented by seven members of the Atascocita band to Summer Creek High School band members, was a decorated bucket for Halloween, along with candy, a small watermelon, coconut, pineapple and watermelon gum.

School administrators conducted an investigation after the gift presentation and determined it was inappropriate and lacked good sportsmanship.


A parent of one of the band members in trouble tells KTRK his daughter was suspended from all band activities for the rest of the school year.

I thought there'd be room for this to be a suspension-worthy move if the school found indisputable evidence suggesting the idea of this gift basket was purposeful malice, insensitivity and/or racism. Like, if there was a video of the crew making the basket and saying racist remarks, then I'd get that punishment.

However, according to the story, it seems the band members have been blindsided by the allegations. I understand even guilty parties would play the blindsided card, but the story sounds pretty bizarre and baseless as of now.

Sidenote: Originally read the title and thought it was referencing a real band, like the Foo Fighters or something. Clicked because I was curious who was responsible for suspending bands.

The article doesn't make it clear how they came to the conclusion it was racially motivated to begin with, so it's very difficult to pass judgment one way or another...

I mean, call me stupid, but reading the article, nothing even says that the band members were predominantly black... And they don't mention how those who received the gift reacted... Why aren't we hearing the voice of the alleged "victims"? We don't get any quotes or anything like that, they cut straight to the reaction of the district, as if they basically interpreted on their behalf that it was inappropriate without even asking them.

Whatever happened, this is poor presentation of the facts.

Although, I will admit that part where they say the school will not "tolerate racial insensitivity" is chilling regardless. A zero tolerance policy for something so broad and difficult to define is always dangerous, no matter what it is.

A lot of black stereotypes are really more a reflection of old southern culture in general, but bc blacks were the ones who moved to northern urban environs in large numbers after emancipation, they became the stereotype for traditional southern dietary habits, speech, education levels etc.

Fried chicken has always been a southern delicacy, along with grits n cornbread and watermelon etc. It stuck to black people because theyre the ones who took that culture to a different region.
