View Full Version : Is LMA know to be a bad defender?

I haven't really watched Aldridge outside video clips.

Watched him for the Spurs yesterday, yes pre-season and all, but the first thing I noticed is how very lazy he seems on defense. For a big dude his defense seems more for show than actually trying. Does not try to really guard the basket. On offense he doesn't try to crash the boards for offensive misses either.

That with the whole thing about not wanting to play center and I'd say we have a primadonna big man who only wants to score?

I could be leaping to wild conclusions from one pre-season game, but I'm not sure LMA is actually the type of player the Spurs want.

More like small market team man... Blazers don't get a lot of play on national TV...

Anyway. Your eye test is about right. Being a Texas graduate, I like following Texas players. LMA is no defensive anchor, but he can handle his own. I would compare his defense to the likes of Greg Monroe. Good in the post. Not that great at switching off pick and roll, but he's intelligent. He doesn't have the lateral movement you'd want ideally.

So bad defender? No. Average to good, and I'd have that scale more towards the good side than the average side.

It's typical sheep herd mentality about LMA.

He is an excellent defender. Arguably, the best big man defender in the entire NBA.

He simply makes the right play almost all the time. He doesn't gamble for steals, nor does he go for blocks all the time. He isn't a defensive intimidator (and as such shouldn't get credit or DPOY votes).

His against fg % is 45.2%. That's the single best determinent of post play defense.

For example, AD is 48.6%.

If you don't think LMA is one of the best 1-1 post defenders you simply either don't watch basketball, or don't understand basketball. It is the same with his rebounding - he doesn't attack boards by leaving his man. He does an excellent job of boxing out his player and not creating vulnerabilities in the defense.

He isn't a very good help defender though. Partly, because of his reluctance to leave his man, and his general quickness. However, he has the size, strength, timing and length to 1 on 1 defend pretty much anyone big guy in the league better than anyone else.

No , he's good defender for him position. He's not Duncan or Garnett for sure but he's better than Blake and Bosh at defensive side .

He's a strong dude like David West. Very difficult to score against in the post.

And he's hustle player . He is mid range guy at offence and defence but he can grab rebounds as centers .

Yep, somewhere in between this. Offensively, he's something between Bosh and Duncan.

You guys do not even watch the games, but you insist on commenting about today's game. Why?

LMA is an above average-good defender though.

Who the hell was guarding LMA when he dropped like 40pts+ in the first two games in the first round against Houston in 2014?

Lol, no. He is underrated and above average but not arguably the best.

Skal ;

:D :D Aldridge was in god mode , like 11 Dirk . A few players have capabilities to guard that Aldridge well in The NBA :D .
