Yeah, that Sixers game is a must-win. A loss here could absolutely derail this season that's almost already off the hinges. That Burks injury really stings, Favors and Hayward are really going to have to show that they're all-star material now for the Jazz to have any shot at the playoffs this year. Favors needs to be Mr. 20/10 and Hayward needs to go get 22/5/5. Elijah Millsap, you're time has come to step up, make us proud so I can wear my Paul Millsap jersey in public again

Alec Burks underwent successful surgery on his fractured left fibula (http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/240293/Alec-Burks-Undergoes-Surgery-On-Fractured-Left-Tibula). Burks will remain in Salt Lake City to begin his rehabilitation, and will then accompany the team on road trips once he is cleared to travel. what many are calling the worst team in NBA history with a now 2-32 record.

They're a lot better than the team we saw earlier in the year. They'll start geting some wins.

The Jazz jumped out to a 21-point first-half lead, but the pesky Sixers went on a 21-2 run late in the third quarter to leap ahead of the short-handed Jazz

It's been nearly a month since Rudy Gobert was sidelined with a grade-2 MCL sprain. The center might still be targeting a return by the middle of next month, but the Jazz have not announced an official timeline.
"I know what you know," Snyder said. "I've seen him working out. I know it's an MCL and we're going to be cautious about him coming back too soon, that's obviously the biggest thing. And he's making progress."

The Jazz (13-16) remain above the playoff cut, although this whole thing is turning into a genuine struggle. And this team needed every bit of the potential growth that could have occurred this year, individually and collectively. That's what is being missed amid these injuries, which are threatening to make it a lost season.

Pretty sure the front office will be thrilled with another lottery pick.

It's not ideal to replace your sixth man and third-leading scorer with a cast of former D-League call ups and a waiver-wire acquisition. But for the Jazz, it's necessary right now.

It's not necessary. It's by choice.

Ingles has been the most productive of the three.
that's highly debatable. I think Johnson is the best of the 3 overall. He should have been in at the end of the last game too. I like him more everytime I watch him. Millsap had a nice game too and has improved offensively though he still can't shoot. Ingles has been a bit disappointing if anything after the way he ended last year.

"He is making shots," Jazz coach Quin Snyder said. "I think for all of us, especially Joe, Elijah and Chris — those guys on the wings that are going to get some more minutes — they've got to do that."

You expect Eli to though?

http://www.sltrib.com/sports/3359565-155/utah-jazz-alec-burks-has-surgery

The procedure to place a plate and some screws in Burks' left ankle could speed up the guard's return to the court by several weeks. Without surgery, Burks was expected to miss at least six weeks and likely more, a source told The Tribune. After the procedure, Burks should be allowed to begin weight-bearing activity after two weeks or so with the hope of having him ready to return to game play within that six-week timeframe, according to the source. That would mean Burks could make his return sometime around the All-Star break.

Was said after the all-star break before. That's still not a several week difference.

[QUOTE]When all NBA contracts become fully guaranteed on Jan. 10, Withey should among the players who has earned that security.

The 7-footer was a late pickup by the Jazz this summer and signed a partially guaranteed deal to boot. But his production in limited minutes has been a boon for Utah in the wake of Rudy Gobert's knee injury. And he proved his worth again Monday night against the Sixers.

"I thought [Nerlens] Noel was a really difficult matchup for us, just his length and athleticism," Jazz coach Quin Snyder said. "

the 20-year-old point guard, the quarterback and defensive stopper out front,

qb? He spotted up for 3's mostly

Gordon Hayward and Rodney Hood can't score the points, run the team and initiate the offense, not consistently, not every time down the floor, not when the game is on the line and the attack needs to flow comfortable and smooth. They need to be set up by a guy who can deliver the ball where it should go at the right time in the right rhythm.

Neto fits that description best.

Exum won't dominate the ball, he'll never be John Stockton-like, but he is better than the options the Jazz are being forced to run with now. Raul Neto is a nice prospect, a decent defender, a guy who also can grow and contribute. But is he the force who will jet the Jazz toward a deep move through the playoffs?

Is Exum? Neto has certainly shown more thus far than Exum did.

Next, Rudy Gobert suffers a sprained knee that darn near sent Dennis Lindsey into a panic. "We were just grateful it wasn't as bad as it might have been," the general manager said. The Jazz's most important player was lost for a period that might extend to a couple of months, and they'd not like it, but take it, given the bleak alternatives.

Most important player? Wow! You sure it's not Favors and Hayward like I keep reading?

One year is usually?

the ultimate "Fool's Gold" season was 2011 when the team looked GREAT after 30, only to be under .500 at the end. Hilarious. I wonder who coached that team? Probably one of the best coaches of all time . . . who then retires during the season.

They were playing bad bad when he retired. The big thing was Deron being traded. I'm sure they win more with him.

Gordon Hayward and Rodney Hood can't score the points, run the team and initiate the offense, not consistently
That's kind of why Favors is such an important part of the offense, otherwise defenses can just focus on these two because players like Neto, Lyles, and Withey rarely ever top 10 points and so teams just focus on those 2. Favors needs to get his back fixed, I feel like it's been long enough

Is Exum? Neto has certainly shown more thus far than Exum did.

Agreed, at the very least has great court vision and better shooting, I love his one-footed jumpers

Most important player? Wow! You sure it's not Favors and Hayward like I keep reading?
People in Utah just want really had for Hayward to be our best and most important player, but there's plenty of evidence on the contrary

the ultimate "Fool's Gold" season was 2011 when the team looked GREAT after 30
Actually it was 39, the Jazz were 26-13 until they absolutely collapsed and self-destructed, that sucked so bad to watch

we can't have freak injuries ALL season long, right?
Kind of like what Xiao said, sure you can, it's happened before to other teams, it happened to the Heat last year. Just hope for he best and expect the worst, that's why you've got to have a great bench

Absolutely huge win for the Jazz! Injuries and all!
Firstly I'll just lost my concerns, the Jazz lucked out, their offense was super stagnant in the end of the game. Whether that's their fault or the Grizzlies, doesn't matter, late game execution needs to improve although health could potentially solve that problem.
Hayward concerned me tonight, he had a decent game but wasn't assertive whatsoever in the end of the game, he needs to go out and get his own. Now I could be wrong here because in the last few games when he shot a lot, his percentages went way down.
Neto didn't do too good, but who plays good in all their games?
Now for the good stuff, the defense was spectacular, but then again, the Grizzlies aren't really an offensive juggernaut. Hood was also incredible tonight, finally breaking the 30 point barrier and shooting the ball well throughout the game. The Jazz are really going to need him going forward.
And I need to say I have been super impressed by Jeff Withey lately, the dude has 5 consecutive games of at least two blocks and is rebounding and scoring at a decent rate. Pleiss played well, but I really don't know what the future holds for him at this point.
Overall great game, guys got a lot of experience, and the Jazz overtook the Rockets for the 7 seed

"At some point saying shorthanded does a disservice to the guys that played," Jazz coach Quin Snyder said. "I've probably been the one that's said that, as you think about it. I think the thing that stands out is just the grit. We played with passion. Whether it's Book or Withey, Tibor, Rodney, Gordon. You go down the list, I don't think there was one guy that just didn't give every part of himself to the game. It's hard to do that all the time, but we sure did it tonight."
This was a cool quote, I honestly am very proud of how the Jazz have done in spite of their circumstances. Granted they are where they are due to a weaker Western Conference, but they're showing some good grit and determination in spite of all the problems they've had.

Send both of them and Exum to Spokane this summer. They'd get a lot more out of it than Burke and Burks did I imagine.

the Grizzlies have won 50 games three straight years been to the playoffs 5 straight years and with all that experience the Jazz were able to hold off a close game win. Finally, the Jazz got huge performances from Jeff Withey and Tibor Pliess which no one say coming.

Not the same Grizzlies this year and no one saw Withey putting up another double double with blocks? He's doing it nightly right now. :confusedshrug:

The Miller family allowed the Jazz to cut Grant Jarrett and his million dollar contract and guaranteed contract to let the franchise keep Jeff Withey. The Miller family took ownership of the Idaho Stampede and are willing to lose over a million dollars a year (not official but rumor mill of what it costs) so the Jazz can develop players and that is what Tibor Pleiss did tonight.

They are 6 million under the cap so let's not go overboard about the Miller's and their spending. I know they are making a lot more money now than when Larry bought the team and only owned a few car lots. Now he owns most of the valley.

The week started off with a Monday win over the Philadelphia 76ers (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/teams/philadelphia-76ers) 95-91.

Something to forget. They were lucky to win that. Pathetic performance.

This season has a bit of that 42-40 Jerry Sloan (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/sloanje01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) season where the team was forced to play so many different starting line-ups due to injuries. But that team never stopped competing. And that team has a place in all of our hearts. I'm encouraged.

This team has a lot more talent than that team even with the injuries.

Going 3-1 when your best PG, one of your best three wings, and two of your best three bigs are all out is really special.

This is Gordon Hayward (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/haywago01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com)'s third year in a row as "The Man" for the Utah Jazz (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/teams/utah-jazz).

He hasn't been the man since Rudy emerged last year sorry

When someone like Trevor Booker (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/booketr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) or Trey Lyles hesitates, then drives into the paint instead of shooting it means they are actually breaking the play.

Yeah but when you keeping bricking open 3's like Hood I think it's better to take a higher % shot which for Hood would usually be driving into the lane because like Hayward he ihasn't shown he's a great shooter, just streaky at best.

Even if you include the playoffs you do not get out of the hazard of realizing that a lot of these coaches were mid-season replacements, and not all of them had full training camps.

Ty certainly never had a fair shake.

ANYWAY -- Jerry Sloan gets you 50 wins a year, every year, for a quarter of a century. Hard to argue with that.

Could if they had anyone else. Sloan had great players.

I love Frank Layden. He was hilarious.

Comedian maybe. Coach no really.

He knew enough to give Karl Malone (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/malonka01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) big minutes as a rookie because he knew how to make him a star.

He played him because he was really good. Frank nor Sloan made anyone a star. Their talent and hard work made Malone and Stockton great. Amazing how Sloan has gotten credit for that!

He made sure to troll Pat Riley (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/r/rileypa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) in that awesome 7 game 2nd round series in 1988. I loved all of that.

It was all great until they choked.

we may have legit doubts about his ability to help this team make the playoffs.

Let's wait until they appear to be trying to make the playoffs before we decide. Lyles wouldn't be playing if winning was their main objective.

So who is the second best head coach in Jazz franchise history? Who is going to be the second best in two years from now?

As much as Corbin is bashed he might be #2. Took over for a legend. They trade his best player. Forced to build around Al. Makes playoffs. Barely misses playoffs. Told to tank.

Dare we tank?
As far as I'm concerned that's what they've been doing. Between their quiet off-season and playing Lyles over someone who is obviously better right now it's hard to see it as trying to win games. They sucked before Rudy turned them around. And without him they are better than they were a year ago but not great.

Back spasms occurred most likely from having to play longer stints and longer minutes.

I think he's had them before. Could be no reason other than it is. To guess it's because he is playing more? :facepalm

Hayward has been forced to shoulder an increased load during this stretch. Hopefully he can avoid the plight of playing a few too many minutes and being the only thing defenses focus in on.

I'd be more worried about them having something left at the end of the year and hopefully into the playoffs. Favors and Maxi G both were done by the end of last season.

The Hood everyone saw against the Grizzlies is the reason General Manager Dennis Lindsey stayed out of the free-agent market, when conventional wisdom suggested the Jazz needed help on the wings.
That's not the reason and based on the fact he has been underwhelming and Ingles, Millsap and Johnson are still fighting for the rest of the minutes and Burks is out they have needed help.

That Hood is the reason coach Quin Snyder didn't hesitate to put him in the starting lineup late in the preseason, even with a healthy Alec Burks ready and willing to contribute.

Don't think that was the reason either.

J.J. O'Brien, a forward who played for the University of Utah before transferring to San Diego State, is a typical D-League player. Having gone through the Jazz's summer program and camp in October, he's hoping his first pro season in a league with a top salary of $25,500 (even for an NBA veteran such as Jimmer Fredette) will lead to bigger opportunities somewhere in the world.

Not exactly typical since he got some money for being in Jazz camp too.

Millsap, a 6-foot-4 wing defender out of Alabama-Birmingham

thought he was 6'6"?

He entered the season as Utah's fifth wing, and one of the better perimeter defenders on the team.

Who's better? I'm guessing they think Johnson is close enough to him defensively that his overall game is better to have which I agree with. Ingles is capable of defending too.

Hard to give up the 2nd best defender to Tony Allen at his position though. Memphis has had success with Allen not being able to hit 3's. Maybe with the way the game is changing as we've seen with Memphis this year and the way the Jazz have been playing without Rudy and Favors they saw this as the way to go. He's an ideal end of the bench guy with his D and energy though. I'm sure he'll be picked up maybe off waivers which helps the Jazz.

They could have kept him until Friday though being short handed and all.

http://www.slcdunk.com/reader-polls/2016/1/5/10719238/utah-jazz-jimmer-fredette-poll

Let's look at some of the facts.

Dante Exum (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/246134/dante-exum) is out for the season. Alec Burks (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/149904/alec-burks) is out again and has to rehab from surgery still before he gets back on the court after they put pins in him. Those are two of the top four guards on the roster.

Exum was basically Millsap so to call him one of their top 4 guard's is questionable to say the least. He was starting for the same reason that Lyles is playing and it's not because he's been as good as the hype.

Gordon Hayward (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/111897/gordon-hayward) and Rodney Hood (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/246135/rodney-hood) can't do it all, and Trey Burke (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/198035/trey-burke) and Raul Neto (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/198045/raul-neto) aren't everyday game finishers at this level just yet.

Neither has Hood been. To me he's in the same tier of players as those two. Go with match-ups and who's playing well. That hasn't always been Hood but like with Exum and Lyles he will play regardless.

The Jazz need something more if they are going to go for a playoff push this year.

They do? They've been a playoff team most of the year despite their schedule and injuries.

Do we give this guy a shot?

I'd imagine he's one of the guys you consider. He's one of the top D-league guys and certainly fills a need as a shooter and pg. He's similar to Trey so I'd think you'd look for someone else.

I am a Millsap Family Fan and felt like his hustle and tenacity out there on the wing was more important in situations than, say, Chris Johnson (http://www.basketball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?search=Chris+Johnson&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com)'s three point shooting. The Jazz brass did not think so.

I don't think so either. Johnson has a better all-around game. They might still cut Johnson or even Withey. Wouldn't be surprised. Johnson and Millsap were two of the best D-leaguers last year. They can replace them with two of the best D-leaguers this year.

So when Exum returns next year, the position that was once thought of as the weakest for the Jazz, will have a solid player at each spot on the depth chart.

probably still their weakest position.

A depleted front court has given guys like Jeff Withey and, in particular, Trey Lyles an opportunity to prove they belong on this team.

Think they'd already proved it. Lyles should be in Idaho though.

Few thought Jeff Withey would make it far enough into the season for his contract to be guaranteed, but it appears Withey has done just that, proving he can provide relief off the bench.

Has looked like Rudy-lite. He looks like one of the best free agent signings in the whole league. No one else even wanted him! Looking like he could maybe start in the league.

Furthermore, these reserve players cost the organization a fraction of what other teams pay their bench players because Utah has primarily acquired them through the draft or on bargain free agency contracts, leaving even more money for the front office to lock up the starting core, especially when it comes time to pay Gobert.

Paying Gobert won't be a problem. Who they give the rest of the money to is the question.

I have a lot more faith in the team now that he is back, thank goodness. And as for Favors, he could play today, but I bet he doesn't sadly. And Rodney will be fine, no worries there.
And hey Xiao, do you go to Jazz games very often? Just wondering because I'm headed to the Jazz/Heat game tonight and I always see you posting on here

With Rudy I feel like they have a chance every night even if they play San Antonio again!

They're definitely better, but I just feel like SA is way too much for the Jazz to handle, this team matche up better against the Warriors I feel, but maybe I'm just being a prisoner of the moment over the Spurs blowouts, we faced them without Rudy both times I think.
And any clue as to Favors and Hood tonight? Right now they're both marked as questionable, and this Heat team looked great last night. I have faith though, with Rudy the team is much better

Although they still are on track, to make the playoffs, their record has taken a hit. Golden State guard Klay Thompson said the other day the Warriors would be undefeated if they had been completely healthy. If the Jazz had done likewise, they'd be in the middle of the West's playoff pack.

The difference is the Jazz are 7 million below the cap with lots of roster flexibility.

what the front office's next targeted moves, with its financial flexibility and numerous draft picks in hand, should be in the offseason.

Let's see what they do with it this year.

It's been crystal clear over the past month that Gobert is key to the Jazz's long-term success. Utah managed a 7-11 record with the center on the sidelines, but the team's defense suffered without Gobert in the middle.
How much have the Jazz missed him?

They're all jumping on the bandwagon now. It should have been clear a year ago though.

Five games shy of the midway point of the season, the Utah Jazz have their sights on the last playoff spot.

I'd think they'd try to get as high as they can in the standings. Might still be able to catch Dallas at 5 and certainly 6 and 7 are within reach. Clipps have pulled away a bit in the 4th slot.

Legit dude, thanks for all the links, I just read through all of them and loved all of it.
As for the content, while I disagree with you about Snyder, I can understand your point of view. Snyder has done great so far in spite of all the injuries he's had, I think that's what the articles are nodding at. And I think the 2012 team is better than this team has been so far this year (due to he injuries). I was on a 2-year religious excursion when he (Corbin) got fired so I don't know all the details. I can say Snyder is a good coach though, I pay a lot of attention to the Heat and have watched a lot of games, and I can tell you he is vastly superior to Spoelstra. He still has some things to prove though, we'll know more in April.
As for the game, the Jazz better not drop this one, the Lakers are not a good team, and with Rudy back we should take it. It'll be interesting to see how Hayward performs though, he admitted he's tired and the Lakers are certainly going to lock in on him defensively, so we'll see how that goes.
And lastly, what happened to Booker? Perhaps I am over reading this but he went to the locker room and I didn't see him return. And I'm guessing Favors and Hood are going to be questionable again, so I'm just going to assume that they won't play

Xiao Yao You
01-10-2016, 06:55 PM
The Jazz were bad before Rudy emerged last December. Like Sloan before Snyder is getting too much credit for having a special player. I like a lot of what is happening with the team but hard to ignore Withey not playing. Johnson too for that matter.

Hayward looked tired. Lakers have been playing better so it might be not be easy.

Booker did come back. He wasn't as energetic as usual so hopefully all is good on that front. Haven't seen anything about it yet. Don't know if Favors and/or Hood made the trip either.

This will be the first matchup between these two teams since the infamous preseason scuffle between Trevor Booker and Roy Hibbert. (http://www.cbssports.com/nba/eye-on-basketball/25330188/video-trevor-booker-smacks-roy-hibbert-gets-ejected-from-preseason-game) Hibbert is averaging 6.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest as the Lakers' starting center while Booker averages 5.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per game off the bench for the Jazz.

Forgot about that! Sounds like Favors and Hood made the trip anyway.

True, the Lakers did almost pull off that comeback against the Kings and almost took down the Thunder, I really don't know what to expect at the moment, I will be tuning in though.
And as for Snyder, that is a good point about the team being horrible before Gobert emerged, but that was to be expected since they were playing just as bad as the year before with Corbin, Gobert definitely is a game-changer. Does that mean he's (Snyder) better than Corbin? To me it shows they were maybe on equal ground only Corbin didn't have the luxury of trading Kanter away mid-season. Just curious, do you think Snyder is a bad coach who lucked out on a good young team or he's actually decent? I think he's good, but there's still most of the season to go

It definitely wasn’t pretty
Understatement of the night

The Jazz were happy to welcome back Rodney Hood, just three nights after it looked like he suffered a serious ankle injury in the loss at Houston. Hood scored 14 points and also had six rebounds and four assists while producing a plus-18 in his tie on the floor.
Thank goodness he came back so soon, too many injuries. At least this one wasn't major. We're still waiting on Favors though, I'll bet you he comes back against Portland though.

The Portland game is going to be much tougher than this Laker one, the Blazers just took down the Thunder - albeit on an amazing comeback - They do have an amazing backcourt so Hood is going to have to step up. It'll be hard to stop Dillard though because he can shoot the 3, thus halfway nullifying Gobert's inside presence. I like our chances though, especially with these few days of rest

I'd say he's only done decent, sadly the team has only won in the no-Gobert stretch when he played well, which was less than half the time. Not completely his fault though since he was playing without a lot of his offensive options for most of the time

Raja Bell won’t be hired to work PR for the Utah Jazz anytime soon. Three-plus years after calling Tyrone Corbin “unprofessional,” the disgruntled ex-Jazzman publicly took the organization to task yet again this week.
He was starting for Ty. Out of the league without him. What an idiot!

This time around, Bell was commenting on a CBSSports.com segment about players who need to be traded when he took another jab at the Jazz.
“They’ll never get rid of Gordon Hayward,” Bell said of the Jazz. "But for his sake, I would hope that they’d let him go and see what it’s like to play in other places in the NBA where they do things a little more professionally and are up with the times.”
I could see him being gone at some point. He can opt out after next year. He'll be a bargain next year but they won't be able to pay everyone in 2 or 3 years.

The Utah Jazz at their best had a number of good teammates, but still relied upon clearing one side of the court for a two-man game. Quin Snyder's offense is much more advanced, and gives many players an opportunity to touch the ball on offense, and make a play on offense.
Really it's the modern version of what they used to do. 3's are the big difference instead of mid range shots. They still run pick and roll and have lots of movement without the ball.

Gordon Hayward (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/haywago01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) (3 games, 33.3 mpg): Wow. Just wow. He didn't shoot very well, but he had a monster week averaging 18.0 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 5.7 apg, and 1.7 spg. These are All-Star numbers. I can't say anything else, Hayward was dominant even if his shots didn't fall. 32.0 PRASB per game.

He's not dominant or an all-star.

Rudy Gobert (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/goberru01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) (3 games, 28.2 mpg): Welcome back Rudy, we missed you. Rudy was on limited minutes but still managed to average 7.7 ppg, 12.7 rpg, 3.3 bpg, and 1.1 apg. These numbers are amazing for someone coming back from such a long injury. 25.0 PRASB per game. The numbers don't begin to tell the story with him though.

Trey Burke (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/burketr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) (3 games, 28.9 mpg): Off the bench Trey also averaged 16.0 PPG, and did a little of everything with 1.7 apg, 1.3 rpg, and 1.0 spg as a reserve. It wasn't the most balanced week, but Trey did shoot 48.8 FG% while taking 14.3 shots a game. High volume, high efficiency for a point guard. I like it. 20.0 PRASB per game.

The assists and boards are weak. He didn't do everything. He scores. That's his role. He's doing it a lot more efficiently now.

Having Rudy back is key, and he had a very good week. I was very impressed with Lyles as well. However, there's really no argument here that Gordon put up the big boy numbers this week. And I have to roll with that.

I'll go with Rudy since numbers don't win you games other than the final score.

I am curious though, will there come a time this season where Trey Lyles (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/257521/trey-lyles) supplants Booker on the depth chart? Lyles is starting right now, but is clearly the 3rd stringer.

Lyles has been in the rotation all year. Withey will be the loser unfortunately considering he is their 3rd best big.

Quin Snyder is probably doing the best coaching job in the league right now and no one is going to think twice about it. The Jazz are 4 games ahead of year they were last year and their best players are out.
I am. The Jazz sucked until Rudy emerged in December so I wouldn't compare it with last year.

They wouldn't move Gordon Hayward until Dante Exum is back and they can reap the results. Next year if that lineup fails, yes, there'd be some injuries to break up that pack and retool a little bit with Exum & Gobert being the foundation, but not now. Not when they're so close to creating something amazing. For the Jazz to move Gordon Hayward this year they would have to receive something very amazing back. Something that would cause Dennis Lindsey to scrap a 5 year plan that is in its 3rd year. I don't believe that deal exists out there. The superstar or lottery asset that would cause him that much reservation just does not exist on the market.

Don't see why not. He can opt out after next year so they'll have a decision to make at some point. Everyone will have money to take on his contract in the off-season so anything is possible. Let's not put Exum up with Rudy yet alright?

Trey Lyles has been taken more and more steps to becoming a bonafide starting caliber player. That is pretty incredible considering he looked completely lost at the beginning of the season.

Hood and Exum were lost at the beginning of last year too and Exum was lost all year on offense. Incredible no.

This big man absence is reminiscent of when Carlos Boozer was down for a time and Paul Millsap took advantage of the extra time.

Millsap was already a proven NBA player and played like an all-star when Boozer went out.

Derrick Favors re-injures his back trying to return to quickly.

Doesn't seem to much concern about that happening.

Rodney Hood trying to shoulder the load becomes frustrated and plays out of his game.

Already playing out of his game with all the 3's.

Dante Exum then returns from injury in the summer. He more than likely won't see a minute in a Summer League game. He returns to full health.

Hopefully he'll be ready for summer league. He needs it.

The Jazz then have a bench of Trey Burke, Raul Neto, Alec Burks, a developed Trey Lyles, a more developed Tibor Pleiss, and others.

Tibor will be gone I would think.

If we told you that the Utah Jazz would be in the 8th spot of Western Conference playoffs at the beginning of the season you would have been ecstatic.

I wouldn't have been. I expected more after the way the ended last year.

After missing 13 straight games due to a back injury it remains unclear when exactly forward Derrick Favors will be back in the starting lineup. But Favors did travel with the team to Charlotte to start a four-game road trip. He is listed as questionable to play.

"Fav's making progress," Snyder said. "But like I said it's such a temperamental thing but I think he's focused on the rehab component and hopefully we'll see him sooner than later."

Gobert did most of his damage against Roy Hibbert, who is now a mere fraction of the defensive player of the year candidate he used to be when he was with the Indiana Pacers. Gobert quickly coaxed Hibbert into foul trouble with relentless rebounding. He beat Hibbert consistently up and down the floor. He shut down the lane defensively. Offensively, he scored his 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting.

Hibbert was the one guy who gave Rudy trouble last year so this is the best part of his game. He got pushed around last year.

"After that series, it was a very miserable summer for me," Bryant said Saturday. "Every day I thought about it. I thought about trying to get past these guys."

It's too bad he didn't have to go through the Jazz on the way to the first title after being swept in two straight years by them.

This seems more like a guy they know they won't want to sign for the rest of the year so they'll be able to remain flexible through the trade deadline and maybe the buyout period as well. Might miss out on someone better in the meantime though. I'd expect he won't get more than the 2 10 day contracts.

Neto and Burke have both done a nice job but, let's face it, they're both 6-foot-1, which obviously weakens the Jazz considerably on the defensive end of the floor.

There are things Neto does on D better than Exum and they've both certainly been a lot better on offense.

No Favors not surprisingly. Would think he'd be a good fit if he was the rim protector they make him out to be.

Serbian coach Igor Kokoskov is the new head-coach of Slovenian NT, as (http://www.sportando.com/en/national-teams/national-teams/188276/igor-kokoskov-is-the-new-head-coach-of-slovenian-nt.html) announced by Slovenian federation. Kokoskov is currently working as assistant-coach for the Utah Jazz and in the past few years has been the head-coach of Georgian NT.

Trey Lyles play has made it a hard call on who should be on the floor between Trevor Booker and Trey Lyles. Booker probably played his best game of the year today.

The decision is between Booker and Withey. Lyles will play regardless.

Hypothetical deal: Casspi to the Jazz for the 2018 first round pick from OKC.

I believe Cousins wanted him back so they probably aren't looking to trade him.

The Jazz are in the top five of drives at 29.9 per game. When a team is aggressive and attacks the basket, lots of good things happen. For example, Utah is top 10 in free-throw attempts per game, 23.8 to be exact.

What are the numbers without Alec?

the Jazz only secure 31 defensive rebounds, among one of the lowest per game averages in the association.

this has been a problem for years.

I think one of them would be a perimeter defender -- but that should be Dante Exum.

He may never be the same.

Another thing we want is a legit outside shooter who is reliable, but we think that is going to be Rodney Hood.

I don't. It would be nice but he looks streaky at best like Hayward.

Derrick Favors likely will miss his 15th consecutive game, due to back spasms. (http://www.sltrib.com/blogs/jazznotes/3441208-155/derrick-favors-dante-exum-doing-more) But he was working on his post moves with assistant Tony Lang, and has been in better spirits this week, especially since he traveled with the team.

Well that's some good news, however small it may be. Hopefully Favors gets back soon, we're dropping an awful lot of winnable games lately (SAC, CHA, NYK). While it's great that the team is competitive, they're not executing down the stretch, wonder if favors will aid in that at all?

Xiao Yao You

Sounded like Favors was close before he missed the road trip to OKC/SA weeks ago so I wouldn't get too excited yet.

Rebounding has been an issue this season for the Jazz, who are ranked 25th overall on the boards and 27th on the defensive glass.

That is not good for one of the few teams still playing big.
