Very interesting news. I hugely respect the Chinese goverbment for taking the step initially when it had to be done. Very tough but necessary decision. That's leadership.

Now we need to get a 1 child policy going in the middle east and africa. Then the future will be lookin aight.

It's too late for the Chinese to fix the demographic disaster they've created. China's rapidly urbanizing and becoming more developed which will eliminate the need for big families as most of the growth came from the rural populations(One child policy doesn't pertain in rural areas iirc). But that being said China still had a higher birth rate than Japan..

I dont think a lot of the people here understand what that policy did. Essentially they're going to be screwed like Japan in a few years because the working population wont be able to support the massive older generation. Something the US has been experiencing to a lesser degree as the baby boomers age and see their benefits decrease.

Everyone understands that overpopulation was as much a Chinese problem as a global one right?

Of course, that's why they addressed it. If it wasn't their problem they wouldn't have given a f.

Good, maybe now all of these families won't just abort female offspring because they didnt get that male heir.

The Male-female ratio is terrible in China. With no wars, men without a purpose, men unable to find compansionship in the opposite sex it results in civil unrest.

maybe China looks to use the low status males as cannon fodder in the event of a WW3.

I thought they ended this policy a while ago to be honest.

How is that shocking when Japan has one of the lowest birth rates and fastest dying rate in the world?

I'm not saying in China's case it's not somewhat of an issue, but in general it will not throw off mating ratios to have a slightly higher male population. Homosexuality is twice as prevalent in men as it is in women; incarceration even more so. Men also tend to die earlier in life due to a higher propensity for high risk behavior.

These things at least help somewhat to mitigate the gender disproportion over there.

Impossible to enforce in Africa.

Being dirt poor, they still manage 12 kids. Same with South America I guess.

I know its been tried before and a bit unethical, but forced sterilization should be revisited. For their own survival.

But that being said we in the West still consume and produce on capita much more than people living in undeveloped countries for the most part. Yea, the high birth rates in Africa is worrisome but we need to have a reality check because they aren't the reason for the world's pollution. We in developed countries are..

If you guys really want to have an honest discussion about climate change you must curb your consumption and look for alternatives. Advocate for politicans to create mass transit which will eliminate need for fuel significantly and which will curb pollution tremendously. Advocate for alternate energy. Advocate for more recycling. Stop drinking plastic bottles altogether, etc. But instead the automobile and oil industry have lobbied against any effective measure to curb pollution because they'll lose $. I don't think the US has any major mass transit project in the last 15 years and alot of our rails where built in the ****ing 19th century.

It wouldn't be needed if not for misguided Western philanthropy.

I don't know why people can't just acknowledge that the development of a civilisation is a long and arduous process. Just the thought of whole generations not having much of a chance is too much to bear for most. Though i usually regard myself as individualist in temperament, it has to be said, that it is from individualism that all the ailments of modern liberalism stem. I can't see liberalism of the old school descend into anything much different than what modern liberalism is - that's the problem with all forms of liberalism really: with no true values, and a utilitarian mentality as its basis, it can only drift towards a kind of state-managed socialism that ends up suffocating the individual (while claiming to be its champion).
