Do I have to watch The Blacklist from the beginning or can I watch current season?

Is it one of those progressive plot shows or the type where I have to see it from the beginning to get a better understanding of the main characters

Or

Is it like most of the other 1 hour action/suspense shows where I am able to watch pretty much any episode without missing a beat, even though there may be some minor character plots, but not enough to where I would be missing out on a lot.

Reason I'm asking is because season 3 is OnDemand only.

If you start at season 3 you wont know what the hell is going on. It starts basically as an aftermath to what the first two seasons built up and climaxed.
