View Full Version : Is Curry the best player in the league?

Mr. Jabbar
10-31-2015, 10:40 PM
I hear a lot that he is already thicker than LeBron ever was cause he is 1/1 and what not but hear me out; HIS TEAM IS UTTERLY STACKED. We've seen LeBeast taking over an entire franchise by himself and getting them to the finals (2007/2015). The thickness of that feat alone would be too much for a guy who is NOT PACKING like lebron. Period.

He has Klay Thompson and this guy Iguodala and Dra Green. TOO MANY weapons by his side.

It's a damn shame we all end up having to guess what players di.cks look like. The nba should take official di.k pics for the player profiles. Lets say you have two similar players, as a GM you would let di.k size be the deciding factor but right now you can't. Rockets would have never hired baby di.ck Harden if they knew about his tiny bulge.

Curry was injured. He had a concussion after he fell on his neck end the end of the WCF.

And LeBron was in perfect health?

Everyone is injured by that time of the year.

Curry was playing just fine in the Finals. He won, led his team in scoring and had a very good case for FMVP. Yes, he was playing a bit below standard in the beginning, but it had nothing to do with injury... he was his usual Curry self by the middle of the series...

That usual Curry self happens to be not quite as good as LeBron - which doesn't take away anything from him.

44% represents pete's midrange percentage, minus his at-rim shots, which couldn't have been more than about 10-15% of his shots (like Curry) at no more than 55% or so, same as westbrook.

Do that math on that, and maravich shot over 40% from midrange, on literally 3 times more volume than Curry..

Of course, since all of maravich's shots were from midrange (not a selected few like Curry), and since maravich faced defenses that didn't have guard 3's and could pack the paint, maravich's midrange was far better contested.. maravich faced lower DRtg too... much lower

the assumptions are perfectly reasonable...

maravich was a jumpshooter, just like curry.. if we assume maravich shoots 15% of his shots at the rim at 60% fg (just like Curry), that would mean Pete shot over 40% from midrange, at literally 3 times the volume.

and again, since all of maravich's shots were from midrange (not a selected few like Curry), and since maravich faced defenses with FAR lower DRtg that didn't have guard 3's and could pack the paint, maravich's midrange was far better contested..

remember, maravich faced much lower DRtg.. MUCH, MUCH lower - it was harder to score back when there was no 3-point line whatsoever, and defenses could pack the paint.. :confusedshrug: .. you want to call that poppycock?... then you're the biased one, not me

maybe not FAR better, but pete was easily better (in a game where there wasn't a 3-point line)..

curry's game is so well-suited for today's environment, that he's arguably the best player in today's game!!!!!

but in the 80's or 90's, he wouldn't sniff the top 5... probably not even top 10... that's how much today's game benefits curry, and that's why you should be wary overrating him.

if you take away the 3-point line so defenses can pack the paint.... and lower the league-wide DRtg literally 10 points... THEN lets see if curry can do what Maravich did: average 30 ppg on high volume while shooting around 44-45%... on all two's of course... Curry can't even do that in today's game, WITH all the spacing..

He already takes contested 3pointers ( I remember even you saying that, by the way). No reason to think he wouldn't be able to maintain or even improve his % from a closer range.

He already takes contested 3pointers ( I remember even you saying that, by the way). No reason to think he wouldn't be able to maintain or even improve his % from a closer range.
More bullshit.. The NBA has data on how contested 3-point shots are.. 0.7% of the Warriors 3-pointers (less than 1%) were taken with the defender within 2 feet, which is about the league-average:

http://stats.nba.com/league/team/shots/#!/?sectionName=Closest%20Defenders&section=CloseDefDistRange&range=0-2%20Feet%20-%20Very%20Tight&sort=FG3A_FREQUENCY&dir=1&Season=2014-15&SeasonType=Regular%20Season

So almost all of Curry's 3-pointers are taken with the defender further than 2 feet away... since 3-pointers are HALF of Curry's shot attempts, we know his shots are FAR less contested than Maravich's were..

With zero spacing in Maravich's day, there was less hope of getting "open looks" through ball movement, so players were expected to simply take their man.. Consequently, contested midrange was expected and standard, which resulted in league-wide DRtg being literally 10 points lower than today.

Also, 62% of Curry's 3-pointers are assisted.. Maravich didn't get 3-pointers at all, let alone assisted 3-pointers..

Dr Hawk
11-01-2015, 09:25 AM

Were all of Maravich 2pointers contested shots?
Again, we know for a fact that less than 1% of Curry's 3-pointers are taken with a defender within 2 feet... and 3-pointers are literally half of Curry's shots.

So that means HALF OF CURRY'S SHOTS are taken with a defender further than 2 feet away.. Don't compare this guy to Maravich..

Why don't you watch some Maravich - you tell me who's shots are more contested (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qv0YS1wHoQ&t=0m22s).

Thanks for the highlight vid. After watching that clip, it's clear as day that Curry is better and more talented.

I'm suggesting that the league average is 0.6% and the Warriors as a team were at 0.7%.... So someone like Curry might be at 1-2%... :applause:

Bottom line - half of Curry's shots are 3-pointers where the defender is further than 2 feet away.. That doesn't compare to Maravich - his shots were far more contested... It's not even close.

Maravich is the easily the better player if you remove the 3-point line.. Again, Curry couldn't average 30 ppg with no 3-point line, or shoot 40%+ from midrange on such high volume, and where the shots are so contested.

Your first paragraph is complete nonsense, you made the percentage of his contested shots up, just like you made up the number of midrange shots Marvich took.

Your second paragraph is based on your first paragraph, which uses a made up statistic as an argument and is therefore faulty by default.

As for who the better player is when you remove 3 point line, I guess you're the only one here who has seen Curry play without one. :applause: :applause: :applause:

Curry takes a healthy proportion of the Warriors' 3-pointers - and we know for a fact that 0.7% of the Warriors 3-pointers are taken with a defender within 2 feet...

Given this data, Curry's percentage couldn't be more than 1-2%..

Shut your mouth until you give me the exact stat or show me how did you measure the exact amount of contested 3 pointers he takes, you looser.

Let's also not forget that contested or uncontested doesn't take into account the fact that a shot could be a set shot or a pull up, which Curry takes often and a lot of his shots that are uncontested are uncontested because he's 30 feet out when he takes them while he's miss matched against a big or takes a step back. Contested or uncontested is not the only measurement of shot difficulty.

Curry was 3-20 last year on "very tight" shots defined as a defender 0-2 feet from the sports vue data. That made up 1.5% of his 3 point attempts.

Now 48.0% of Curry's 3's were defined as tight (2-4 feet). 283 made 634 attempts. 44.6% accuracy.

He's not better than LeBron. Lebron is still just too versatile and impactful on both ends. But after LeBron? Anybody is fair game. I'd take Curry over Durant in a playoff series. Durant may be the bigger mismatch in terms of his size, but Curry's the more dynamic shooter(which is ridiculous to say, cuz Durant is an amazing shooter as well), along with a wicked set of handles, and playmaking ability. Very high impact player.

Let's be real for a second here. Curry is an amazing player and has potential to become the best but he's not a more complete baller than LJ. We all saw Curry perform on the NBA's biggest stage and he was not particularly impressive. He did not stand out as the best. Also why he did not receive any FMVP votes. Saying Curry is the best now is like saying LJ was the best in 08-09-10 when the level headed fan knows it was Kobe.

Just like not having a killer finals isn't a legit knock against Curry or his claim to being the best player in the NBA. I'm not sure he's better than harden or Lebron right now, but it has nothing to do with what he did in the finals.

Curry's biggest strength is what he can do to impact the game WITHOUT the ball. For some reason fans spend far too much time worried about what happens with the ball they don't see how others are impacting the ball without having it. We're only starting to get a better understanding of this through statistics like gravity and how players interact as a unit. Sure a well trained eye can see what's going on, but it's hard to quantify. Thankfully we're getting there.

Every unbiased fan would take 08-10 Kobe over 08-10 LJ. That was the closest we have ever seen to MJ level play. And we can all agree MJ is the GOAT. Lebron is the closest from a pure value add we've seen. Wade in 09 was the closet to MJ I've seen (early MJ) as far as a player comp. 08-10 Kobe while he certainly used the post and fade aways was nothing like MJ.

As for the MVP, clearly not. It's a nice award and the voters generally get it right. Certainly not always but on average they do a pretty good job.

Wait...he's for sure better than Durant ever was...what?

What is going on with people?

I have no issue with Curry being the best player in the league. He might be...I'm not sure. He's certainly gotten off to a great start...but come on with this shit.

He is not clearly better than the other elite guys at the top and sure as **** is not "for sure" better than Durant ever was.

Durant in 13 and 14 (over 162 games) was a 30/8/5 64% TS player that probably played slightly better defense than Curry currently does.

Stop the madness please....stop saying Curry is clearly better than some of the best players of all time at their peaks...it's annoying and is taking attention away from him playing out of his mind.

And to be clear...I love Curry. I think he has a legit chance to go down as the 2nd best pg of all time. I honestly believe that given his level of play since he got healthy going into the 13 season.

But the shit has to stop. Saying Curry is "for sure" better than Durant ever was is akin to saying he's "for sure" better than some of the 10 or so best players of all time at their peaks.

Like...is Curry "for sure" better than peak KG now? How far are we going to go with this shit 3 games into a season. I know Curry was great last year...and has been for a few years now, but even if you thought Curry was the best player last year....he was absolutely not "for sure" the best player last season. Harden and Lebron could easily be argued as being better last year than Curry...and WB probably as well.

IGOTGAME not too long ago:
''Curry is overrated. He's not that good. Peak Mugsy Bogues over Curry!''

IGOTGAME now:
''Better than peak Magic and Bird!''

Hilarious.

I never insulted you...and only responded in the same tone that he presented. I've gone through my logic in about 3 threads. before I thought he wasn't a good enough point guard to run a team but know I realize it doesn't matter. He doesn't even have to pay point guard and it doesn't matter...the game has changed. Conventional wisdom says that no one shots that good to be able to win on those shots all year...I grew up believing that but Curry is a freak and the exception to the rule, just like other freak generational talents.

Also, he is def better than Durant ever was. The other stuff was just to **** with DMAVS because he sounds like he is gonna have a heart attack. But it's a legit question to ask...I don't think the other guys are out of his league (but I tank magic and Larry lower than most)

I've changed my opinion. I've seen the light.

You are simply ignorant to basketball history. Simple as that.

He's not serious. He hates Curry and is being sarcastic.

Watch, Curry will have one subpar game and he'll go back to saying he's overrated.

So please, for the sake of sanity, stop the madness. Or at least give it like 50 games please...
Agreed, i think Curry would of done it sooner if it wasn't for his ankle injuries. It basically slowed his growth two years. He was rehabbing and stressed out because it was a recurring injury. He has always been a gym rat. Since he got healthy in 13 he blow Ray allen record like noting and has beating his own record every year. His talent is immense.

until durant learns to create for himself, he will be never be on currys level. The problem with durant is hes a tweener. Too tall to be a slasher and too thin to be a post player. Thats why you can stop him with just a cp3. And worse is hes a quitter. The guy just isnt a winner.

That usual Curry self happens to be not quite as good as LeBron - which doesn't take away anything from him.

maybe because lebron is getting single coverage while curry is getting doubled despite playing off ball. Just look at houston when curry gets guarded like bran
