View Full Version : NBA players in today's game who you would take over any version of Kobe

Who would you take? With the recent explosion of star power, there's a ton of talent in today's league.

Let's begin with the obvious LeBron, AD, and Durant are the easy 3 better than any version of Kobe, no explanation needed here

Then Curry has recently now proved himself as more impactful overall (which Kobe fans fear for some reason). Better in everything except defense, can explode with his scoring while also being a playmaker.

What about Harden? His efficiency far surpasses any version of Kobe. While Kobe was a better defender Harden is better at carrying players (He took Dwight to the WCF while Kobe took him to the lottery etc) It's close but in terms of carrying players Harden is better. Harden is also the better passer.

Then we have to look at Westbrook, CP3, Blake, and Cousins. Out of these 4, who would you honestly take Kobe over? Kobe is the better scorer, but all these other players give a better combination of efficiency, rebounding, defense, playmaking.

CP3 has some of the highest PER of all time, brings in elite scoring with passing and defense. Makes his teammates better in ways Kobe couldn't, and knows how to run an offense. Blake is overall more impactful in terms of rebounding, interior scoring, and is more efficient, and Cousins can absolutely devastate a frontline with his size and post skill, he's basically a Shaq, so more people would build a team around Cousins than they would over Kobe, big men generally get selected before Guards, especially with Cousins impact.

What about Westbrook? He's a smaller Kobe to some degree, would you take him over any version of Kobe? Not sure here

In their primes I am taking all of these guys over Kobe, and twice on Sundays. Despite the great scorer he was in his prime, Kobe has NEVER had the impact that other greats have had. That's why I doubt he'll ever crack my top 15. :confusedshrug:

LeBron would be too if he played with '00-'02 Shaq. Hell, it was debatable whether or not he was the best player on his team with a still peak Wade in 2011

It wasn't in 2012-13 and it's debatable if peak Shaq is better than 2012 Lebron who was near MJ level at that point.

If you disagree, that's fine. We can agree to disagree. But I believe that Lebron at his peak is one of the top 2 players who have ever played. Not even Shaq was better.

Your entitled to your opinion, but Shaq's peak > LeBron's. Shaq has arguably the GOAT peak, while LeBron's probably isn't even top 5

Peak Shaq is overrated in a weird way. people believe he could do mythical shit like average 45/20/5 against last years Warriors in the Finals yet hesitate to put him in the Top 5.

There is literally no other player people are more confident about crushing elite players/teams of any era except Shaq, yet he's always ranked around Kobe or Magic.

Either way, I think 2009 and 2013 LeBron are on par with any Shaq year.

Peak play is not equal to where a player ranks all time. People do that because peak Shaq was the arguable GOAT player, but based on his career and what he accomplished, it's honestly no lock he's a top 5 player

Agreed. Lebron peak is amazing top 10 but Shaq is right up there with Jordan and Wilt at worst top three and is most dominant player I've ever seen play his 00/01 seasons might never be seen again by any player.

FG%

'00 Shaq: 57%

Finals

'15 LeBron: 40%

FG%

Playoffs
'00 Shaq: 57%
'15 LeBron: 42%

Finals
'00 Shaq: 61%
'15 LeBron: 40%

TS% kinda levels that out

But scoring and rebounding were about the same, with LeBron have triple the number of assists

Its close though, which makes it funny as its a Past- peak LeBron vs. an absolutely Peak Shaq, and the results are still close

Therefore its not a stretch to say a Peak LeBron is better and would outplay a peak Shaq

In the playoffs? Whatever, yeah.

Meh in the regular season.

And averaging 45/20/5 on whatever FG shooting against the best defensive frontcourt in over a decade would still be mythical because he never did anything close to that. Not even in 2001. And the numbers I'm bringing up are not made-up. People actually tried make these projected stat lines some passable thing Shaq would do to the Warriors.

Wade 25/5/5

LeBron was better
This. Pay no attention to that troll southbeachtalents. No one seriously believes Wade was better than Lebron in 2011, which is why they always put all the blame on Lebron for the Finals loss. Wade has never even been in the same tier as Lebron.

It remains to be seen but I think 2015 Durant will be better than Kobe 2009/2006.

2015 Westbrook, Curry, Lebron, and Antonio Davis all have a chance a well. I'll say maybe one or two of these four ends up topping 2009 Kobe.

Either way going to be great year for super-stars...much different than a few years ago when it was Lebron and Durant followed by a huge gap.

Wade literally threw away half the games in those finals, yet I never hear a word of it on ISH :lol

Game 2, did nothing in the 4th quarter

Game 4, threw it away with a missed FT and messed up the inbounds pass

Game 5, checked out of the game in the 3rd quarter, didnt return, played only 30 minutes IIRC

Game 6, WOAT performance, 17 points, checked out of the game, wasted a 21 point effort by LeBron, overall a bad game

Every loss by the Heat, was directly the cause of Wade, in each game

If you go small and play Green on Shaq...he will give you 40. If you play a traditional lineup than you've already lost. Think that may have been the argument

That's not true, the wide consensus that year was that Wade was the best player in the world

No, he wasn't. Wade was regarded as the best player in the Finals but that's it.

2011: LeBron and Howard were considered the best players, with Dirk not far behind but that's because he sustained an injury in December that costed him to miss games.

That's why Rose winning MVP was so controversial.
