he currently has a PER of 52. If he keeps this up he'll beat the previous seasonal record of PER by over 20 points!!!

That's the one thing that will always be somewhat of detriment to his career and legacy, but then again Magic wasn't a good defender either. As good as Curry is he's always going to need to be surrounded by good defenders, and that was highlighted by the fact that a defensive oriented teammate won FMVP. Nevertheless, Curry is playing at a ridiculous level right now.

New Age GOAT

Keep in mind - there were a lot of really awesome TWO-point shooters in previous eras - guys like Maravich or World B Free.. Otoh, Curry is great in this era because he shoots that awesomely from 3-point range - literally half his shots are 3-pointers - he shoots as well as from 3-point range as Maravich and World B Free shot from 2-point range..

But what good is that in their era when there was no 3-point line?... So the question becomes: is Curry as good a 2-point shotmaker as these guys - because if not, he wouldn't be as good as Maravich or Free in previous eras without the 3-point line...

And as it turns out, Maravich, Free, and a slew of other guys were BETTER 2-point shot makers than Curry, so Curry would be ranked below them in previous eras - this makes sense, since we already know that the current era is the only era where Curry is a top 5 player.

How do you figure? If there were no 3pt line Curry would still be a better shooter than all of them.

Literally half of Curry's shots are 3-pointers, so to evaluate how he would do in eras that didn't have a 3-point line, we have to compare his 2-point shotmaking ability to others in those eras.

As it turns out, Curry would rank as the 1,031st best 2-point shotmaker in previous eras, so he would be much worse player than today, where he's the best player in the league - today's spaced-out, 3-point friendly league is the only era where Curry would be a top player... #realtalk

ok, maybe not the 1031st.... Maybe the 879th...

bottom line - his 2-point shooting ability is nowhere near elite, so he'd be nowhere near elite in previous eras.. again, this is the only era where Curry would be a top player.

Jordan would be mediocre in today's "spaced-out, 3 point friendly league". He'd be lucky to drop 20ppg, the game has evolved beyond his limited skill set.

the nba gives curry an incentive to take shots from behind the 3pt line

if the 3pt line weren't there... curry wouldn't keep taking those shots

he would bring his game closer to the basket, he would penetrate more, and he would attack the basket more

we know he can do that... because he does it all the time

as soon as he does that enough, the defense has to compensate..

which means sagging off him

giving him space

and we know what happens when steph curry has space..

15 feet or 25 feet doesn't seem to matter

bottom line: he is a great shooter, not a great 3pt shooter

and he's awesome at effectively creating shots

for whoever

Wade and Westbrook led league in scoring in 2009 and 2015 with a worse 3-point shot and far worse mid-range shot than MJ.. Nor could they double-pump with ease from the FT line (http://cdn.makeagif.com/media/10-03-2015/64Ba72.gif) like MJ..

I guess that's why MJ was able to average 37 PPG on 59% TS despite shooting all 2-pointers amidst every-possession double-teams (http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?t=386210).

And this thesis exemplifies how sample sizes can serve to skew the bigger picture. If I did a cursory search to crop out the first-few games of a season for one with a strong seasonal start, I can already assume that the distinction wouldn't remain; but when I do a totalizing search for those who have played at least 50 games in a season, I'm seeing a much more exclusive company (http://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/psl_finder.cgi?request=1&match=single&type=totals&per_minute_base=36&per_poss_base=100&lg_id=NBA&is_playoffs=N&year_min=&year_max=&franch_id=&season_start=1&season_end=-1&age_min=0&age_max=99&height_min=0&height_max=99&shoot_hand=&birth_country_is=Y&birth_country=&birth_state=&college_id=&draft_year=&is_active=&debut_yr_nba_start=&debut_yr_nba_end=&debut_yr_aba_start=&debut_yr_aba_end=&is_hof=&is_as=&as_comp=gt&as_val=&award=&pos_is_g=Y&pos_is_gf=Y&pos_is_f=Y&pos_is_fg=Y&pos_is_fc=Y&pos_is_c=Y&pos_is_cf=Y&qual=&c1stat=g&c1comp=gt&c1val=50&c2stat=per&c2comp=gt&c2val=30&c3stat=&c3comp=gt&c3val=&c4stat=&c4comp=gt&c4val=&c5stat=&c5comp=gt&c6mult=1.0&c6stat=&order_by=per).

How will Curry's season protract when he plays a sizable amount of games?

First, there are foreknowable inevitabilities that'll skew his PER downward: reserved minutes due to early-blowout games, individual and teamwork-oriented defenses to stymie him, and irresolvable off-nights (the analogous law of gravity; what goes up (confidence) must go down (due to overconfidence) are the most obvious.

Less obvious but not much less impactful is the fact that Steve Kerr will likely enforce more ball movement once he's back at the helm, which will apportion less of his usage rating

Also, take a look at the per 100 stats of everyone in the playoffs - notice how MJ's efficiency is equal despite much higher shot volume - he's doing what everyone else is doing, but just more OF it - so imagine if everyone else did more of what they were already doing - that's MJ:

JORDAN:. 43.3 pts.. 2.2 oreb.. 6.1 dreb.. 7.4 ast.. 4.0 tov.. 2.7 stl.. 1.1 blk.. 32.5 fga.. 118 ORtg.. 56.8 ts
LEBRON:. 36.5 pts.. 2.0 oreb.. 9.3 dreb.. 8.6 ast.. 4.5 tov.. 2.2 stl.. 1.2 blk.. 26.8 fga.. 114 ORtg.. 56.5 ts
DURANT:. 35.8 pts.. 1.2 oreb.. 9.1 dreb.. 4.8 ast.. 4.1 tov.. 1.4 stl.. 1.5 blk.. 25.8 fga.. 114 ORtg.. 58.3 ts
KOBE:..... 34.7 pts.. 1.4 oreb.. 5.5 dreb.. 6.4 ast.. 4.0 tov.. 1.9 stl.. 0.9 blk.. 27.7 fga.. 110 ORtg.. 54.1 ts
WADE:.... 32.2 pts.. 2.0 oreb.. 5.4 dreb.. 7.1 ast.. 4.8 tov.. 2.3 stl.. 1.4 blk.. 24.5 fga.. 108 ORtg.. 55.4 ts

We all know how high volume can help dictate pace of the game... But that isn't enough to win... High volume AND high efficiency is what devastates teams.. Of course, achieving high efficiency at high volume while winning a championship requires the most skill - the player must achieve the high volume at high efficiency within a team concept, without diminishing the stats of teammates.

The only players reach the holy grail of basketball skill by shooting high volume at high efficiency while winning a championship (25+ FGA on 45%+ during the playoffs) were MJ (1992, 1993, 1997, and 1998) and Hakeem (1995).. It's crazy - sometimes we forget how skilled Hakeem eventually became (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njTa6_HBlI0).
