Depends. A player-first fan who hails from a city without a team has far less to be ashamed of than the turncoat, glory-chasing lowlives the OP is calling out.

Id agree for the most part....except some families are raised to be fans of ____ and thats older than an expansion team.

Half the south is redskins fans because everybodys grandfather was back before expansion. Before the Falcons even. The Redskins were on tv in the south from Georgia to Maryland. So people were raised redskins fans. You dont stop because the Panthers come along. You wouldnt believe how many old people I know who rep the Redskins.

Plenty of people here are Laker fans because their dads were in the 80s before the Hornets existed and they grew up Laker fans.

The big franchises with some age on them grandfathered in their fanbases.

I agree to a degree. That is a small percentage doe.

I can't stand bandwagon riders when they got a team in their backyard to support.

Even before the sonics left my city, I couldn't stand anyone not rooting for the sonics. Rockin laker , Celtic jerseys

Roll with your city bad or good. It just makes no sense to me how you could just hop on another team. Low self esteem and general teenage girl thought processes I guess.

My kids are now playing Bball. Old enough to understand the game.

I gotta drive to another damn state 2.5 hours away to watch a NBA game. These innanent sissies stream a couple a games from a team 2000 miles away cus they in love with a player or a team that wins when they got a team in their city and they a "fan"?

Fucc boys.

To be able to drive 10 minutes and take my kids to watch OUR team!????!!??

^This^

The Titans didn't move to Tennessee (Memphis for one season and then on to Nashville) until I was 20, and the Grizzlies didn't move to Memphis until I was 24. By those ages, my sports loyalties, those of my family, and older generations were already decided. Because there was no local team to support, most of the people I knew growing up were Cowboys, Steelers, and Showtime Lakers fans. I grew up a Showtime Lakers fan and pretty much stopped being one when Magic retired. Because the Hawks were the closest NBA franchise there were quite a few Dominique fans here in the 80's/ early 90's.

When Penny Hardaway was traded to Orlando on draft day half of the city became Magic fans because he was the biggest sports star from our city. Even my mother who was probably around 60 years old at the time and knew next to nothing about sports knew who Penny and Shaq were.

Today, I do support the Grizzlies (and Titans to a lesser degree) out of mere geographical obligation, but my heart is not truly in it.

I agree to an extent.

I've been a Celtics fan pretty much since the day I picked a basketball up and I've never not been a Celtics fan. I consider myself .01% a Spurs fan entirely because of my fandom for Tim Duncan...but even when he plays the Celtics, I hope like hell he loses. Same for KG's years in Minny and post-Celtics. Those are the only two players I've ever stanned to any extent in my life...but loyalty to either player was 100% suborned to the Celtics.

Didn't really like hockey very much before 1999 when I discovered D1 college hockey. When I came home that winter during a break in classes, I immediately became a Bruins fan and haven't liked any other NHL team in that time.

Football and baseball are a different story. I grew up a Dallas Cowboys fan which I inherited from my dad. His dad was in the Navy so they moved around a ton when he was a kid and they happened to live in Beaumont, Texas at the time he got into football...so he became a Cowboys fan. We didn't really become Pats fans until Bledsoe got drafted in 1993, but even today we still watch every Cowboys game that broadcast up here.

Same deal with baseball. He lived in Georgia when he got into baseball so he became a Braves fan and I inherited that from him in my early years; and it was great because if you got TBS on cable, you could watch most Braves games. The Madden/Smoltz/Glavine/Chipper years were pretty cool. I grew up knowing about the Sox tradition and watching games when I felt like it, but I was mostly a Braves fan. Then in 1998 the Red Sox signed Pedro Martinez and that was the beginning of my Sox fandom, which I've been ever since.

I ride with my NBA team because I have good memories of watching this team with my dad and uncles and older brothers.

I don't really feel the same connection with my town's other sports teams though. I'm a big fan football but don't give a F really about my town's foootball team. Rooting for a random jersey has always been whack to me. In football I just watch the sport because I love, and usually i end up rooting for a few teams with a lot of passion because i love the players on the team...and i also end up hating a few teams because i don't like the players on the team. This is all more meaningful than rooting for colors.

There's alot of circumstances of who you become a fan of.

I'm a first generation central American. There was no allegiance from my pops to new England or any sports teams here. This is just where his family was. He didn't know what American football was, never heard of baseball. Only sports he knew of was soccer and basketball, and his love for Magic and the showtime Lakers. He's still a fan to this day of the Lakers but he's a Pats and Bruins (don't know how that happened) fan now too. But to me, with not having any knowledge of allegiance to the teams around here I just became a fan of Jordan. First ever pro sports game I saw was MJ in his comeback season against the Knicks at MSG on NBC and from there I made my pledge to stick with my team. From then on I became a huge Big Hurt fan and supported the ChiSox and then from there became a Erik Kramer and Curtis Conway guy and became a die hard Bears fan.

I'll never support other teams and I'll never turn my back on my teams. If you ever in Boston and see a Sonata with a BULLS license plate decal and Bears fitteds in the back, you know it's me.

I dunno op, people can like what they like. It's their time and money being spent, so let them do them. That said I support my hometown team, been to 2 games this year so far. I just dont show anywhere near as much support as I did as kid though. I soured on the way they handled a few pillars here on their way out, so i watch but dont have the same attatchment i once did. I do follow teams of players I enjoy watching however. Was a huge Jordan fan in the 90's like most, thing is now we have access to more games than we've ever had so I can almost watch at random now

Being from Utah it's hard to support a franchise that doesn't do its best to win. Rudy got me excited about them again and with a new GM and coach you want to think things are going to be different andthan they go another off-season without spending money so I can watch the end of their bench suck.

I generally agree with the OP...Go for your home team. I totally agree. Go back and read the archives, I watched every single Cavs game in 2010-11. It was very tough, we broke the record for most losses in a row. I remember one game against the Lakers, I stayed up till about 2AM to watch Antawn Jamison and company get smoked by like 50 points. Byron Scott was so embarrassed returning to his former team like that. But, look at the Cavs now. I had to get used to rooting for different teams in the playoffs again, I wasn't used to it. Now, its nice rooting for my team again. There will always be players I am fans of or just enjoy watching but I will always pull for my Cavs, with LeBron, without him, with an entire team of D-League scrubs.

My Grandparents lived in San Francisco before the Giants even moved out there, and they are huge Giants and Niners fans. That's who I grew up watching and rooting for. I've lived most of my life in Virginia, so I became a Wizards fan by going to a bunch of Wizards games, especially in the years the were bad, because the tickets were so cheap. I sat right behind the visitors bench on a Wednesday night for $8 once. I was on TV every time the ball was on my side of the court. <3 Wizards
