for me, Godfather, Matrix and the Dollars Triology

The best 'unofficial' trilogy is Pasolini's Trilogy of Life (Decameron, Canterbury Tales, Arabian Nights).

If that doesn't count, either The Apu Trilogy or Toy Story.

It has to be LOTR.
All 3 films were epic.
The Godfather 3 ruined its chance of being called the best "trilogy".
Although both parts are in my top 10 list.

Not sure how everyone else felt, but I loved The Hobbit too. LOTR was a better trilogy but Hobbit brought way more nostalgia for me, may have been the first full novel that I ever read way back in grade 3.

I'm not going to go with "best" because I have no patience for arguing opinions.

My favorite is without question the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Honorable mentions (in no order):
Original Star Wars trilogy
Back to the Future trilogy
The Hobbit trilogy
The Man with No Name trilogy.

Sooooooo overrated.
Wouldn't even make my top five list to be honest.

1) LOTR
2) Three Colours
3) The Dollars
4) The "Dark Knight" Trilogy
5) The Matrix

HM: Bourne & Toy Story.
If we are to include Star Wars into the mix, than it's quite easily 2nd on my list. I still prefer LOTR over it, but by not much.

Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi is the greatest trilogy in history.

No film has made as large an impact on pop culture and has as many hardcore fans as Star Wars does.

Definitely, but how is Star Wars a trilogy?
A trilogy consists of 3 movies.

If that's the case, is Die Hard & Terminator a trilogy? If so, they are at the very top.

I'd say Back to the Future and Indiana Jones is another epic trilogy.
Mad Max is pretty damn good.

Definitely doesn't make them the 'best' films though.

Sure, you can say SW is the best trilogy ever and that's a perfectly fine opinion. But if you're saying it's the best trilogy because of pop appeal and # of fans, then you'd also have to say they're the three greatest films ever, period?

im guessing everyone has seen star wars and appreciates them as good films. do i really need to argue that?

godfather is the greatest duology ever, sure, but godfather 3 is a big piece of crap and leaves a black mark on the trilogy.

tlotr is definitely a great contender. im just giving star wars props for being more popular than the rest, and not in a box office hit way like transformers, but a large fanbase way.

We all know The Godfather sits atop. No questions there.

Some memorable duologies:

Ip Man

Red Cliff
Once Were Warriors
Ghostbusters

I'd go out on the limb and say the matrix, just because of what it meant to me and how it affected my life and my way of thinking. I know people like to bash the sequels because of being slow and philosophical, but I like that kind of movies and the first one is my least favorite. The second movie was received poorly at first, but watching it now you see that it's a great thriller with more wit to it than most of the oscar movies these days.

Other than that there's some obviousy choices:
Bourne trilogy - was revolutionary in the spy/action genre, kept the extremely high level of quality throughout the trilogy even while changing the directors.
Lord of the rings is up there obviously.

I'd say my 1a/1b is matrix and the dark knight trilogy.

LOTR wins because its overlying main arc throughout the 3 movies is so ****ing good, in like 9-10 hours of film, not a single moment was dull.

The twist in the 3rd Batman sucked. Saw that coming a mile away, Talia al Ghul isn't exactly an obscure character and it makes a hell of a lot of sense for her to show up in a series that already established the existence of her family and in a movie whose primary villain linked himself to her father. As soon as Ra's al Ghul was mentioned I knew exactly what the big reveal would be. Doubted her legitimacy from the start (not exactly uncommon for a new character to secretly be a villain) but it made it very obvious as the movie progressed.

I still enjoyed the movie but the twist was predictable.

That's not THE twist of the movie that everybody talked about.

And good for you for being clairvoyant, but most of people didn't see that coming.
Just because someone luckily guesses what happens in fight club or usual suspects doesn't make the movie shitty, you're one in a thousand.
