You'll BS yourself into thinking the service was only worth $1.83, when it was really worth more.
Cheap shit.

This.
If the service was really that terrible, leave nothing. $1.83 is just someone being cheap.

You aren't required to tip so I think it was nice of you to leave some additional money for the waiter

Who would even write $1.83 cents on a receipt? Unless the kid did it just so he can tell his internet friends on a message board, that's petty and pathetic.
I tip odd numbers all the time in order to make the total an even number.
So if it's $8.53 I'll tip $1.47 and write it on the slip.

If you eat 10 bucks or less, then it should be fair, shouldn't it?

I'd usually round it up to at least $3, whatever is the closest even number.
Don't think I've ever left anything than a $3 tip. Even on Jimmy Johns delivery.

Yeah, I'd say the same. Except for coffee tho because I'll just toss $1 in the tip jar.
Btw, does anybody know what an appropriate tip is to leave for the hotel cleaning crew? Never knew that was customary and I have no idea what people normally leave.

Why would you tip them if they are getting paid atleast minimum wage ?

Apparently it's common to tip house keeping at a nicer hotel. Just looked online and the size of the room and how messy you are generally what the tip is based on.

I usually leave $5-$10 per night depending on the satisfaction of their work. Little more for cruise ships.

Ye some people tip and some don't but I don't see the point of tipping if the maids make minimum wage. I can understand the concept of tipping related to servers since by law they are paid less than minimum wage but I don't like the idea tipping in general. Pay your workers more and stop trying to pass the costs to the customers.

You tip $1 on a $2 coffee? IMO them holding down a lever and handing me a cup is not worth a 50% tip. Unless you're getting one of them crazy frappucinos or whatnot.
Don't get me wrong, I'll tip a minimum of 15% (usually more) at a restaurant or bar... but hell no will I tip over half the cost for someone to fill up a cup. And I used to work in a coffee shop at one point.

I regularly go to the same coffee shop down the block so I like all of the people there and they give me free shit frequently. If I'm stopping into a random place I won't tip tho. Prob should have clarified.

Gotcha. If you're a regular at the place then it makes perfect sense.

While it's not required to tip hotel maids (or servers for that matter), I feel like if they have done an excellent job, then I can afford to throw them a few $. I tipped my bartender at a Dave and Buster's in SD $90 (on a $210 bill) because the dude was funny as shit, and he was on point with refills and drink suggestions. He went above and beyond, so I gave him a tip worthy of his efforts.
Not to mention, you don't know what a good tip can do for some people. $20 may not be a whole lot you or me, but you may make someone's day.
If they paid their workers more, they would still pass the costs on to the customer via higher food prices.

some restaurants in new york are trying this. no gratuity needed. instead, the price of meals go up, and that extra money goes to the employees. they hope to make that a national idea. but lets be honest, that will never happen

I much prefer this system.
Don't put a worker's livelihood in the hands of a Jameer who tips under $2.

Don't worry. Jameer can't get a date so he never goes to restaurants.

I don't understand the point you're trying to make here.
Jam never specified the restaurant or the cost he spent for his meal.
For all we know, he could be tipping a fast food restaurant.
Or his meal is under $10, which is at least 18.3% tip
Could be true. Jameer, how much did the meal cost? If your meal was $10 or under, nothing wrong with a $1.83 tip.
