View Full Version : Porzingis leads all rookies in PER (and steals)

From reddit:

It's because of those steals and blocks.
The 7'3 Latvian leads all rookies in steals per game
Think about that. That really is quite absurd.
He also leads all rookies in rebound rate. That's right, higher than Towns; higher than Cauley-Stein.
He also has taken more free throws than any rookie.

As a bonus:

[quote]Also, didn't expect this: the Knicks have allowed 95.2 points per 100 possessions with Porzingis on the floor & 104.6 when he

Well, you can certainly separate the haters from NBA fans in here.

KP is a lot of fun to watch. His early success can really be attributed to the fact that he's very cerebral. He doesn't get caught up in that stupid shit that many players succumb to. Always thinking about how to help the TEAM. Yes, his size helps as well, but he doesn't get shook. Poise. Just stay out of foul trouble, young man.

They need to trade Melo. Badly. While he's still getting some consideration. I'm repeating myself yet again, but he does not fit in the system PJ's developing. The days of ISO ball are over. Ask the real contenders. Also, NY needs another young point guard with some speed. We still have Afflalo who will probably help with scoring, but I won't hang my hopes on a journeyman.

I wouldve rather had those guys as well, but aside from Mudiay they werent available.

And you have to realize we got Jerian Grant, who will be a starting point guard in this league for years plus Porzingis. We filled two roster spots in the draft. taking Mudiay, whos skillset didnt fit the triangle offense anyway, to fill 1 spot just wouldnt have made sense. Phil got the best of both worlds with his selection. Pretty sure if Grant gets the minutes needed to develop Mudiay wont be much better than him anyway

Agreed. Mudiay is super young and has a lot to learn. But we have time and in 3-5 years he will be much improved.

But zinger is a nice player. Nothing wrong with him.

Clifton

Teams are always slow to adapt to guys with long arms. Kirilenko would routinely have 5 block games, statlines looked like a mini KG for a year or two. After a few years he became irrelevant.

For a while Ibaka was around 3-4 blocks a game, that's dropped off.

You don't expect a guy to be 7'3 with long arms. It's a curveball. Shots you would normally get off, get palmed. But after a year or two teams totally adjust to players like this, unless the players improve as well.

So if in 3 years, everyone's gotten used to his length, but he's also polished his footwork on both ends, and developed a smooth, consistent game on both sides of the ball, he'll be an all-star. Right now he's really raw, I don't care what the stats say. Hits the open jumper but everything else is in serious need of polish.

He's certainly not as good as Towns and Okafor, who are playing like all-stars from day one.

You can't teach height, nor can you really adjust to it. It forces you to take shots you don't normally take.

if you arent blocking shots, but the threat of your shot blocking is forcing the offense to adjust, you are still playing good defense.

Yeah, I disagree with this. Completely. Kirilenko was relevant for close to a decade, that's a very disingenuous argument. KG is STILL getting minutes off his long arms, and he's a zombie these days. Serge Ibaka averaged 2.5 blocks a game last season, missing nearly 20 games from injuries, and clearly wasn't right the entire season. I'm sure teams will adjust to Deandre Jordan and Anthony Davis' long arms any day now, and they will soon be irrelevant. Just like teams adjusted to Wade's long arms quickly, oh wait, no, he can thank his wingspan for being one of the greatest guard shotblockers ever.

Jermaine Oneal, Shawn Bradley, Manute Bol, Alonzo Mourning, Robert Parish, Mutumbo....

If you are over 7' tall and don't have T rex arms you will be blocking shots for a long time. There is no adjustment. Blocking shots is what these guys DO.

I dont think anything about this post is accurate. And when it's all said and done I wouldn't be surprised if it goes Towns > Porzingis > Okafor.

Plus... the topic is about how many steals this guy is getting, not blocks. He's leading ALL rooks in steals.

Porzingis is just the 3rd player this decade with at least 70 points & 50 rebs in their first 6 career games (Blake Griffin, Anthony Davis).
