View Full Version : Dallas Mavericks - Revenge of the Betas?

Nearly every player on that team came from a team that did not want anything to do with them.
Zaza - Bucks wanted him gone
Felton- Dumped in the Tyson Chandler trade
Parsons- Not matched by the Rockets
Barrea - Timberwolves cut him
Charlie V - laughing stock of the league
Dwight Powell- dumped in the Rondo trade by the Celtics
McGee- cut from his former team
Evans- minimum contract scrub
Williams- cut by the Nets
Dirk is still by far the best scorer on that team, Mavs are 6-2 and destroyed the "contender" Rockets yesterday.
Quite funny, thought the Mavs would be one of the worst teams in the league.

If the Mavericks make the playoffs with a strong record, he should be the hands down COY.

I didn't think we'd be able to tank lot a lot of crazy Mavs fans thought we would, but Dirk was looking absolutely horrendous defensively last year and early reports were that Matthews, Parsons, and Williams wouldn't be ready to go early.
Powell has been amazing and Zaza, like most decent centers, is doing good work next to Dirk.
But lets see how this goes...Dirk has been tearing it up until the last couple games.
I wish we had tanked, but obviously we weren't so I guess it's time to start hoping for the playoffs...

Some crazy things happened
Dirk is playing VINO style, he looked horrible during Eurobaskets.
Dwight Powell is a real stud, in hindsight he should have been drafted around 10-13 in the 2014 draft
Matthews is 100% healthy

EDIT: Wasn't about matching an offer but eh
But in the end, after five seasons, the feeling was not mutual. He was greeted with silence. No phone call. No text messages. The Blazers never made an offer.
"I was pissed off," Matthews said. "I felt disrespected."

Right...which is why a lot of us wanted the tank because we thought we wouldn't be bad enough to keep the pick...or good enough to either make the playoffs or win a series.
I will say...Powell has been surprisingly good in a way I did not expect. Sadly though, this start just re-enforces my thoughts that we should have just built out a solid team these last 2 summers rather than swinging for the fences.
We'll see how consistent we can be...if Parsons can come back within 6 weeks or so in terms of playing full games...we should be even better.

Barea is the closest thing to an alpha as you'll see with this Mavs roster. Not to say they're not well-coached or that Dirk isn't balling. It's just they're not intimidating as a team is all. Bunch of betas.

I'm still very skeptical of this team as the offense really hasn't been that good so far, but I gladly admit and hope I was wrong about this team being able to make the playoffs.
Still pisses me off to no end that we didn't just build out a solid team these last 2 years instead of chasing so-called "stars"...
But, so far, this has been a joy to watch...and if Parsons can come back within a month or so to playing 30 plus minutes...the offense could get a lot better.

Making the playoffs makes it worth it...I guess. I don't know...I'm so upset and torn about how Cuban and Nellie have handled this team since the 14 playoff series against the Spurs that I'm probably too angry to have a sensible opinion.

For guards? He sets a pick and if the team sticks to Dirk...the guard has a lane to the basket, jump shot, or clear passing angle to a shooter if the defense collapses.
For centers? He draws a big outside the paint...often to range...which gives them more room in the middle of the defense both to score and to attack the boards. Also, when everyone is worried about Dirk and the guard on the pick and roll...or Dirk in the wing post...they lose track of the center.
It's not all Dirk though. The system Rick has created with shooting just maximizes the output and allows certain types of players to really excel...Zaza is skilled enough to that on offense. Honestly, Zaza should be off to an even better start...he has the yips on his mid range jumper that is normally far better.
Still hate how we handled the last two free agencies, but all I can say is I was dead wrong about the potential of this current team. I still don't trust it to continue, but so far I have some crow to eat...more than some.

Dirk on the floor creates space that no other big in the history of the league does. And that can't be quantified in the stat sheet.

Basically, stuff that doesn't show up in a stat sheet. Dirk on the floor creates space that no other big in the history of the league does. And that can't be quantified in the stat sheet.
Bingo, but good luck trying to explain this to just about anyone.
Although one could just look at the entirety of Dirk's career and look at the success he and hist teams have had...and if they were honest about the coaching and supporting casts...they'd be really impressed and they'd realize what I call the "hidden value" of Dirk.

I'd love to see Dirk's "gravity" charts through the years and compare them to some other players. I mean we know the impact he has, but it'd be awesome to quantify it and visualize it. Didn't Kirk Goldsberry work on those gravity score or something?
Also, I love old man Dirk still knocking down back-breaking shots. When he knocks down a J in fourth quarters, you see the defenders just look dejected. It's great haha
I think we gotta say RC is an absolute magician. I assumed Dallas would lose its pick this year and gave little chance for them to put something productive together. I didn't trust D-Will or the health of Matthews and Parsons. RC does so much considering he doesn't have the same roster continuity as other coaches enjoy.

Rick is a straight up genius head coach...he's a better coach than Dirk is a player right now.
Also, D-Will and Zaza are playing fantastic...and they deserve most of the credit for this.
Of course Dirk helps them all a lot, but lets not take away from watch some of the other guys are doing on their own.
This team's margins are slim and Dirk has clearly been the best player, but they are plus 2 points per 100 with Dirk and only -.6 points per 100 without him.
So I just think some of the other guys deserve a lot of credit as well...

Agree with the bold so much. If he continues to coach this Mavericks team to one of the top seeds in the West, he deserves coach of the year. This is the 2nd year in row he's been coaching an over the hill team, filled with injuries, and with an old Dirk to a respectable record.

Mavs bench always freaks out when Dirk scores.. since forever.
Every teammate he's had has quite visibly loved him. It can be seen in their play too, all thriving, maximizing their abilities, overachieving, exceeding expectations. Credit to Dirk, credit to Rick.

In another stat that makes you scratch your head and ponder how the **** these Mavs are winning games...
Going into last night's game...the Mavericks ranked 28th in the league in shooting on wide open shots (defined as not having a defender within 6 feet)...they were dead last until recently apparently. Heard this from Mark F. on the broadcast last night.
I knew the shooting had been bad in those situations, but my god...how they have managed to have the 14th best offense with such terrible open shooting is beyond me
I keep thinking we'll go on a bad streak, but these numbers would suggest that if that normalized for the rest of the year (it should...many good shooters on this team) that perhaps that offense could crack the top 8 with Parsons coming back and everyone staying remotely healthy
Pretty interesting...

Yeah, I dont think its a fluke anymore.. they'll have a bad stretch, play some great teams, etc. but the level of play will generally be the same, then going into the playoffs.

Carlisle was really pissed last night about the first half effort...causing him to say:
"if it's going to be like that, these guys won't be Mavericks for long"
Obviously most likely just a motivation tactic for the Nets game tonight, but strong words regardless.
Unfortunately this team is trending badly right now. They are down to the 16th best SRS and now are the 20th ranked offense.
Parsons and Wes simply have to play a lot better. It's almost January and it's time they step it up.
Dirk/Zaza/Deron have done their part by getting us to Christmas above .500...now it's time for the two highest paid players on the team to step up and play at a level at least somewhat close to their paychecks.

A true "beta" win last night...
Dirk goes a beta 3-15...with the Bucks guarding him in such a dumb way. They doubled him in the post on the catch all night which led to great looks...and then left him open for good to great looks most of the night on pick and pop and weak side action. Dirk just couldn't hit anything. Bucks lose by 25 if he's not way off.
Wes/Parsons are finally showing signs of consistent and quality play....which is great news with Deron out.
Zaza once again doing just about everything right out there.
Felton had a nice efficient game for a change as well.
Betas win again...on to the Warriors for a showdown on Wednesday.

There is something about him that doesn't elevate his teammates. He gets "his".... but it is weird how he should be helping his teammates more.
D-Will the other night talking to Skin in the postgame (after he hit the shot to win it) said he scored so much in double OT because the defense was glued to Dirk and gave him some **wide** open opportunities.
Davis needs to have an impact on the court without garnering a bunch of stats. He has all the stats.....

Yea...he clearly hasn't reached that level yet where he can just get pretty much any team to 50 or so wins.
I used to think that kind of stuff tended to be a bit over-rated because so much goes into winning games, but his impact is not as great as I thought it would be...not even close this year
The Pelicans franchise is a dumpster fire and rebooting everything might be difficult...they did a terrible job building this team around Davis

Parsons man...hard to have words for how much of a total waste that clown was last night.
Tough to take a 1-8 game with bad defense from the highest paid player on the team.
Parsons on the year so far;
9/4/3 50% TS...11.2 PER
Has the 55th ranked RPM for small forwards at -2.21
I know he's coming off the injury, but he can't play if he's going to play this poorly...either sit and get right...or don't ****ing play.

Nearly every player on that team came from a team that did not want anything to do with them.
Zaza - Bucks wanted him gone
Felton- Dumped in the Tyson Chandler trade
Parsons- Not matched by the Rockets
Barrea - Timberwolves cut him
Charlie V - laughing stock of the league
Dwight Powell- dumped in the Rondo trade by the Celtics
McGee- cut from his former team
Evans- minimum contract scrub
Williams- cut by the Nets
Dirk is still by far the best scorer on that team, Mavs are 6-2 and destroyed the "contender" Rockets yesterday.
Quite funny, thought the Mavs would be one of the worst teams in the league.
D-Will wanted to play in Dallas so he is happy. He plays freely and much better, when he is happy.

Team is very beta right now.
Parsons is playing great though...have to give him so credit as he's rounded into form nicely and is producing consistently.
Dirk is struggling with his shot and has been for a long time now...unfortunately his legs are probably gone because of the burden he had to carry early on in the season.
Wes Matthews has been a disaster overall this season. Granted, some of this was expected due to coming off the injury, but all he does is get wide open 3's and he is shooting them at a putrid clip and has an overall 51.7% TS this year which is really really really bad given his role.
The playoffs are probably a coin flip at this point with the Jazz and Rockets better teams overall...and the Blazers certainly playing like they are better lately.
Celtics fans in a great spot yet again with draft picks...this Mavs pick could be in the lottery now.

Thanks to LeFAG sitting against Houston 4-4 won't be enough.
Cavs+Mavs win would mean Houston had to go 6-2 while the Mavs had to go 4-4( winning against Houston)
