No series ever had as many subplots, stars, quality of play, underlying hatter and overall significance as the 1984 Finals (Showdown 84') did. No series before or after has been as epic:

Could the modern NBA with its lack of true gritty rivalries, decay in fundamentals, overprotective rules and the soft "buddy buddy" attitude today's stars exhibit towards each other reproduce this type of atmosphere for a Finals series?!?

People wouldn't be able to handle game 4 of this series if it happened today.
You have:
Lakers on the verge of finally beating the Celtics and taking a commanding 3-1 lead.
McHale clotheslining Rambis.
Bird and Kareem getting into it.
Magic "choking" multiple times in regulation and OT.
Bird hitting the gamewinner over Magic.
The stans would be losing their minds.

Just look at the names:
Kareem, Magic, Worthy, Bird, McHale, Parish, Ainge, Scott, Cooper, Ainge, Wilkes , DJ!!!
That's still the most amazing talent ever going up against each other in a Finals series!

Yea, you can call that the GOAT series...
You had 3 top10 GOAT players, and at least another 2 top50 all-time (you can make a case for like 4).
Bird and Magic in their prime, Kareem still great.
9 HoF'ers in Kareem, Bird, Magic, McHale, Worthy, McAdoo, Parish, DJ and Wilkes.
Also had players like Cooper, Byron, Maxwell, Rambis or Ainge.
Series went to 7 games, with only 3 of them being double-digit games.
You had Bird and Magic playing against eachother in a Final(s) for the 1st time since college, you had players talking plenty of trash on both sides, Celtics vs Lakers is one of the GOAT rivalries...
Series was incredibly competitive, tremendous physicality, beautiful basketball, lots of clutch plays and iconic moments...
Simply one for the ages, amazing to watch

Nothing with LeBron/Duncan Heat/Spurs is approaching anything like the Magic\Bird Lakers/Celtics rivalry. The 84' series literally went to the last minute of game 7 in the legendary Boston Garden! Can't beat that!
I'm a hardcore Lakers fan through and through Shaq is Goat but you have to call it like it is even if the Lakers lost! The 1988 almost came close but the injury to Isiah kind've dimmed the series

True.
ISH would've EASILY crashed...The ending of OT in particular would've crashed the ENTIRE internet.
Magic bricks BOTH freethrows to put them up 2 and then Bird hits the gamewinner right in his face. This AFTER his turnover that sent the game into OT.
There would be a million threads about how much of a "choker" he and the Lakers were.
The shit-talking from both fanbases would've been unbelievable.
Imagine a player calling their own teammates "sissies" publically to the media like Bird did in today's age. That could never happen now.
This series is known to have changed modern basketball. The amount of all time greats and notable players/coaches/moments involved plus the fierce rivalry makes it legendary.

2013 Heat Spurs >
The series had like the lowest free throw amount in an NBA finals by far
Just pure, team passing, basketball
GIF REACTION
11-16-2015, 02:33 AM
Miami shot 118 Freethrows over 7 games
Spurs shot 158 Freethrows over 7 games
22+16=38 FTs a game average
GIF REACTION

Miami had a .159 Free throw rate
That might be the lowest of all time in an NBA finals
Definitely lowest by a champion winning team

Bulls Celts 09 is better then that Heat Spurs series.
Heat Spurs isn't even the best of the millennium

There is only one team in NBA finals history with a lower Free throw rate
1993 Bulls, and that was in 6 games (History shows the more games played, the higher the free throw rate usually goes)

Like I mentioned at the beginning of the thread, the subplots of the 84' series had just as much impact as the play on the floor in making it the greatest series of all time!!
Magic/Bird close to their primes, Celtics/Lakers the two most storied and winningest franchises in basketball history, the racial connotations, the pure hatred from both franchises etc...
Miami/SA 2013 was a very good series but LeBron/Duncan don't move the social pendulum the way Magic/Bird Lakers/Celtics did!

yet another thread that seperates the men from the boys. if you're saying heat & spurs > celts & lakers you should be stripped of your rights as a basketball fan as well as your nuts as a man.

Heat/Spurs wasn't even really competitive until game 6. F*ck outta here.
Compare the intensity, physicality, level of play and historical significance of that series to the Celtics/Lakers...it's a joke.

The Heat and the Spurs COMBINED attempted pretty much the same FT's as the Celtics alone.

Wut? Game 1 was won on a game winner as well. The Spurs (Green specifically) went on a GOAT level shooting streak. Games 6 & 7 were amazing AF. The Spurs' meltdown. LeBron hitting the game winner in Game 7. Timmy missing an extremely easy shot.

Game 6 was really amazing , i'm fine with that . But total finals quality was bad for nba basketball level . And "Lakers vs Celtics" s all finals are epics . Bird was legend at 84 , Magic was legend at 87 , Kareem was legend at 85 and Worthy,Mchale,Parish,Dennis were in their primes at all 3 finals .

All you need to know about the intensity of the 84' Finals is on full display when Magic is responding to M.L Carr's threat about "flattening him in the Forum". 30 years later Magic is a legendary athlete, multibillionaire business man and he looks like he's ready suit up and throw down with M.L. if he walked in the door and challenged him again.
That type of intensity and bad blood among MULTIPLE other things are what the NBA has virtually eliminated with the soft video game rules it has come up with for the last 25 years.
But hey we still have another record breaking 3-point shooting season ahead of us!!!
