Interestingly enough, I've read a few posts from Chicago fans, and they think its a legitimate argument.

Meanwhile haters will always claim that 2011 Rose was overrated, whereas Jimmy gives you roughly the SAME impact on defense PLUS dude can drop 20 a night. I think they're the same tier of player, but Derrick might get the nod because of his explosiveness.

Who's better, and is it really an argument?

It doesn't make one a hater to say Rose was over-rated in 11...because he was. Or at least he was by many Chicago / Rose fans.

I'll take Rose here though...his offensive ability and ability to actually run an offense in a way I don't think Butler can...trumps Butler's defensive advantage

Of course not. I should've re-worded that and said haters consistently downplay everything Rose did that year (and its true).

Would you go as far as saying they're the SAME tier of player?

No. I think Rose in 11 was definitely a tier above Butler.

Rose was a top 7 / 8 or better player in 11. He deserved MVP...

Butler isn't a top 10 player. Honestly, I'm not sure Butler is a top 20 player. He might be, and I like Butler, but I think this is a case of over-rating all around play a bit.

Not an argument. People have short memories.

Rose in '11 was a bonafide superstar, a top five player. Whilst his team was superb defensively, they were absolutely inept offensively, and he was the linchpin of all of their success on that end. His partner in the backcourt was Keith Bogans. Keith ****ing Bogans, not exactly Klay Thompson. Rose propelled the offense, Rose was their only play-maker, and Rose and received the ball during crunch time. Rose was the only player on the roster who could create his own shot.

Butler is great right now, and is one of the best two-way players in the league but at best he's a borderline top 15 level talent, and he has probably reached the summit of his abilities.

MVP Rose today would be in the conversation for second-best PG in the league (Curry being #1 of course) and a top 10 player. And he was only 22 years old at the time.
