View Full Version : The problem with immigrants

Is that they do not assimilate to the country's culture they immigrated to.
And it's actually the fault of the country. Take the United States. We don't even have a National Official Language. Combine that with Politically Correct leadership, America's Nationalism and culture does not get enforced on these people who technically came here for a better life.
I'm all for people immigrating to this country legally, but embracing American culture and values. The same goes for any other country out there. Instead, what we find, is complete segregation. Look at the UK and their Muslim-Only zones. And the moment we open our mouths about this problem, we are labeled bigots. But how can this be? How can we allow so many different cultures into countries, and allow them to not assimilate, and just carry on with their own culture and values till it conflicts with regular every day citizens and quite possibly, the law?

Asians have been coming to the United States for a few hundred years now. If there is a culture that assimilated and made something for themselves here in America, it's the Asians.

Give us a rundown of what specific steps immigrants should take to assimilate to 'American Culture'.
None of your usual vague, bumper sticker bullshit. If I'm an immigrant from say, Taiwan and I want to assimilate... guide me step by step on how to do that.

How is setting up Chinatowns all over America where only Chinese culture- language, food, etc propagated an example of assimilation? If someone told you that was Shanghai in that picture, how would you know they were bluffing?

They do assimilate... But it takes a long long time. I don't think it is smart to bring in such large amounts at once, especially ones with such different values systems and religious beliefs...
Assimilation can be broken down into three types
1. Anglo- conformity or, in more universal terms, host-conformity--the refugee must become like the native, completely accepting the dominant culture
2. Melting pot.... A romanticized liberal utopia where every culture wins.... This never happens and is completely unrealistic
3. Cultural pluralism, the refugee will acculturate to the dominant pattern particularly for politics, play, education and work, but will preserve his communal life and much of his culture.

how does having a china town an example of assimilation? its actually the opposite. chinatowns were created by immigrants so they can feel a sense of normalcy in a new land. it also provided a cushion for immigrants and their families coming from china to living in the united states.

Chinatowns across the U.S. are a multi-million dollar business. I think they've long assimilated to the American Dream and Capitalism. The mere fact that I can get Rolex knock-offs at half price speaks volumes of their willingness to assimilate.

Church girl shit. Ain't nobody got time for that. Anyway, we got into the assimilation debate the other night, and she feels that it is unethical and is a human rights violation to impose a national language on someone who comes from another country. Hence, not assimilating to the common spoken language here. :hammerhead: :banghead: :wtf:

At the rate its going...within our lifetimes the country will be 35-40% Hispanic. Its gonna be 28-30% by 2050. If it hits 51% should the national language be Spanish? Should your children be required to learn Spanish at 40-50 years old?
Besides they dont tend to come here and stay the way they were for generations. Kids born here are just Americans who speak two languages. Im sure the Pennsylvania Dutch didnt primarily speak English for some time. Its the children who bridge the gap not the parents who get here as fully formed adults.
And you couldnt force your way of living on anyone anyway. Not in America. What are you gonna do exactly? Make them watch Friends, speak English at home, pick a college football team, and buy guns?
You cant enforce your culture on people who come in and even pretend to be the land of the free. A lot of people came here to get away from places trying to make them something they arent.

Then you might as well not have a country if you can't enforce American History and culture. Every few hundred years the country will become something else and change names and then become something else after that. What's the point then? Might as well start handing out pictures and signs that represent things and actions cause I don't know how else we're going to understand one another.
I'm pretty sure other countries don't feel the same way and would be pretty upset if an American went in there and refused to learn the language and cry foul if no one spoke English.

We are not now and will never "enforce" our culture. You know it and I know it. So your way to go is...not have a country?
Im...thinking we wont go that route either.
This about real discussion of the issue or venting about shit you know wont change? If its just venting il lleave you to it.
We all vent now and then. You wouldnt believe how ****ed up my day was yesterday....
But this is just going nowhere if you see it as forcing beliefs and a way of life down someones throat or dissolve the union.
Neither will happen....life will go on. Country will be fine. If you think its gonna reach a point we use hand signals and pictures I dont know what to tell you...
English will always be an option. You can go to most of the world you would want to visit and speak english. Friend of mine got a job teaching in China and people go out of their way to practice their english talking to him. He doesnt speak a word of anything but English and he loves it there. Ive had friends in the Navy go all over the world....tell me they speak english wherever they happen to be. Always works out.
Like 800 million people speak English and the number is growing fast.
You will never in your lifetime fail to get by in America because you speak English. There are states with a hispanic majority now...I notice the English speakers get by.
Last I was in Texas I was in a Sams club in Austin and I swear it was me, the woman I was with, 2 white shoppers and 300 hispanics including every employee.
Still worked out. I got what I came for.
The country will be fine if only for the great number of the people in question being second and third generation Americans.
They might not watch the NFL...but they will speak English.

Assimilation arguments are stupid and pointless. Just call a spade a spade. It's xenophobia. America is a melting pot country. Who gives a f*ck if you see a sign in a different language. James Madison couldnt begin to wrap his head around what the world is today and if he had to try there would be many revisions. Wanting to hold tight to outdated rules and guidelines of men in power hundreds to thousands of years ago does more damage to the world than maybe anything else.
If we could get people to let go of what their ancestors were doing and revise the rules and their lifestyle to suit what makes sense today we could make some progress. The same system that held blacks down as slaves, changed that and gave them rights. The "Evil white people" were also the same people who eradicated most of the inequality. Can you exactly blame the original forefathers on slavery? It is something that was practiced all over the known world back then, even in Africa with blacks enslaving blacks.... I think the main issue is people not seeing(or more likely seeing and not liking) that American culture like most others is forever evolving with the people we add to it. We dont have one way. We have many ways....together...and that is our way.
I dont see us ever having a Quebec kinda...country within a country situation. Something where a whole section speaks another language almost exclusively and holds tight to their way in defiance of the rest of the country.
Unless of course you see the south that way which....I know some do.

This is a key point. The current culture is not perfect, but our system has the mechanism to correct those wrongs. The system is a living work in progress. It doesn't just change back and forth on the whims of whoever is in charge at the time. For example, slavery is gone. That's permanent. It doesn't just switch back and forth.

I personally don't think there is a problem with immigrants
Just the method to how they immigrate into a country
The problem I see in Europe is, they are allowing way too many refugees in way too fast, to where it has put national safety at risk, and implicating cultural decay for years to come... They are coming from a conflict region in a world with considerably different value systems than ours... Ones that are essentially medieval in nature.... Women's rights non existent, dress codes... etc etc...
Assimilation takes years...

And still to this day Blacks enslave other blacks (Nigeria/Western Africa)...
Nice use of quotes for something nobody said there...
And yes I can blame anyone for slavery. They were for the most part intelligent reasonable people who knew it was wrong and chose not to do anything about it because the moral issue was lesser to them than the trouble of ending it was worth.
Read some of the writings from guys like James Madison on slavery. Clearly a rational person...and someone who hated slavery. Just not enough to free his slaves....even in death. He was kind enough to ask that they not be sold without their permission....though his family did it anyway.
Nobody said white on black slavery was the only kind...or even first. Slavery is as old as desire. A man wants something done...doesnt want to do it...make someone you have power over do it for you. It will never end in all forms. There are places it wasnt even illegal till the 1980s.
But fact is...im only taking someone so serious when they found a country on the ideas of freedom, equality, and democracy....except we get to enslave people, rape them at will, murder them without punishment, and keep half the population from voting by gender and a lot more for being poor. Hell you talk Judeo-christian values...Jews couldnt even hold public office in some states till like 1830.
This country was found by outright hypocritical bigots....who....probably meant well. But it is what it is.
They were from a time when things we consider evil were common. Their actions...we would consider terrible. I am a student of history. I respect the balls it took to form this country. And even some of the slave owners seemed like decent people...if you can even make sense of that.
But when it comes right down to it....you tell me you want a country of freedom, equality, and representation of those you tax....while holding slaves, not letting women vote, and crushing tax rebellions by people who largely cant vote due to poverty or living on the frontier?
The hypocrisy of early America was to put it simple....epic.
Too epic to define America as it is by what they wanted it to be.
Its come too far.

In a lowkey sense it is
Take Paris for an example
The higher the Muslim population grows (And it definitely is) the less the traditional European culture becomes... And then naturally, the next step is power in government, which leads to changing of laws, which starts ambiguous, but before you know it, laws are made to protect Islam, and it would only get worse from there
An extreme look at it, but this is what is ****ing happening now in Europe, especially Paris. They talk about breeding with European women to breed them out.... This is what I mean by cultural decay
Immigrants should be brought into a country at a controlled rate... I believe in national identity... It's what makes each country unique and great. Multiculturalism is nice, but it cannot take reigns over a domestic population

Well, America is too big of a country to define it as one specific culture. It's like trying to define European culture. Irish culture is different from French culture. Louisiana culture is different from California culture.
I agree.
America is just too large for that. Too much going on with too many origin stories. Much of this country was Mexico for a long time. Some states were France, Spain, or Mexico...
Some states have huge populations of Africans....some areas had an influx of millions of chinese. Millions of Irish came through the north east. Not to mention the millions of people already here when the country was "discovered".
America isnt like parts of Europe with thousands of years of somewhat defined areas.
Its one country the size of 20 with 300 million people from 50 backgrounds all mixed together.
Saying there is one American culture is almost like saying there is one Russian culture when you have China on one end and the middle east on the other.
We have American cultural stereotypes. Thats about it.

I had a very polite conversation with a Klansman in Anderson south Carolina once that you really reminded me of there.
His whole thing...at least because he was talking to me...who knows what he says in private...wasnt being racist. It was trying to keep his culture what it is. He was upset that whites are the only group that cant say they love their people. He was upset about mixing....wanted everyone to stay what they were. Not just for whites sake...but for everyone.
The differences make them all unique. It was as pleasant a conversation as a black guy could have at a flea market surrounded by white people who were kinda embarrased to be seen near the Klan.
Im not calling you a bigot...im just saying you really REALLY took me back to my one extended experience with the Klan.

My point is...I dont care what founding fathers decided America should be because so little of what they thought is applicable to today. If American culture was what they decided made sense we would be every bit as bad as the backwards countries we forever mock.

I brought up something very interesting in one of the many racial threads we have on this site, and it was a way for White People to be proud of their race and their culture without having that fear of being labeled a bigot.
White people should forget the term "White" all together. Just like Blacks have adopted the term African-American to express their African heritage, Whites can do the same by expressing their heritage based on the country's of their ancestors. Swedish-American, German-American, English-American, Dutch-American, etc..
This way, if one of these Uber Liberal shit tards wants to open their mouth, they'd really look stupid then.

It's an interesting topic no doubt
Cultural decay takes years... But my point about national security still stands. You don't bring in such a large demographic of questionable immigrants so loosely and so quickly. It compromises safety
I think European countries should be respected for their traditional identities... I don't see white people migrating in massive numbers to the Arab nations or African ones... Not even the South American ones.... Yet the opposite is true. I think there is a certain respect one must have for the domestic population... It can be seen as taking advantage of all the benefits western civilization provides.
It's a very deep topic that isn't that simple to answer. It is not to say that no race/ethnic group of people can't breed at the same rate as the majority White European population... This is stuff that extends far far down the line into the future... Where do we draw the line? Are all races supposed to be equally represented? Because all I see is a shrinking white population over time... We simply do not procreate as much as others... A lot to think about here

And thats a problem? The world is only what...15% white? 20 tops?
The world is shrinking as transportation becomes easier. And the poor from the third world who used to not survive have lives extended by modern advances...so places have a population boom. There are like 200 million people in Nigeria right now....
You produce more people...more of them want out as conditions get worse....more want to come here and similar places.
The world is mixing at a rate never possible before. The third world has cell phones.....
Its all starting to be one world. There will always be borders....but the number of people with the means to cross them will rise forever.

They do assimilate but it takes time.
Immigration should be done at a slow, controlled rate... Not in a reactionary manner which undermines national safety considering the conflict risk that some of these immigrants offer...
Slow and steady wins the race
it doesn't work like that.
from what I've seen, certain groups of migrants bunch together. They prefer to live among their own, rather than mix into the culture. It's definately apparent with the Muslims here in Australia. Some of that can be atributed to alienation. No work opportunities and lack of acceptance in Australian society.

I don't have any stats or anything but I have to imagine the rate and extent of assimilation is pretty high for 2nd gen immigrants.
It's pretty good, but a very complicated question that varies on your ethnic status and religion. Lots of immigrants face institutionalized road blocks of assimilation like poor schools and all the veiled racist bullshit that can keep our "native" minorities from assimilating. Others, like lots of Asian immigrants, say **** it, and form enclaves to become successful, but that really stops assimilation of cultural ideals of the majority. Conversely, it will tend to lead to professional assimilation, i.e. they will have greater academic achievement and higher household median income.
Lots of cool studies on pathways and mechanisms of assimilation for different migrant communities and how it's changed the past 50 years.

Because PC warriors like to believe that everyone deserves equal opportunity, but in some cases I don't think that is relevant or true.
What did these migrants do to deserve the benefits from which western/european countries had worked hard for and built?
So do we want troubled people from African/Middle eastern countries becoming the majority? The answer is no. No we don't.

they were in shock...so we went to a hardware store and bought a couple .22 pellet guns and started shooting random dogs and cats in the middle of the street....:confusedshrug:

Once we get into who deserves anything the list gets short.
Very few people deserve anything. You get what you earn...id say nobody deserves anything more. You can get it...we have programs to help....doesnt mean youre morally entitled.
A migrant worker is generally working his ass off for a better life.
Id say morally...they deserve what they have more than many people born into comfort.

My great grandmother couldnt vote when she came of age because she was a woman. And my grandma was raised in the 20s and 30s south. Saw it all...not the least of which was my grandfathers brother being lynched...
All of them gave me the "We came too far...." speech. And it stuck. But it isnt the same thing here.
The America that those of the past built...was built by the very thing we are arguing about.
It was people who came here...and people who came after...Asians....whites...blacks against their will but still....this country is a country of outsiders.
Its not respecting their efforts to pretty much ensure that people like them cant contribute going forward.
Not that this is new. People who were second generation were rioting over the Irish coming over during the potato famine like their fathers built the country with their own two hands.
Its like a bomb shelter situation. Everyone wants in...and is glad they got in...but now close the door. We can only take so many....
And its true...you CAN only take so many. But they didnt care when they wanted in. But hold it against others coming later.
Human nature I guess.

The problem with immigrants? They land at the bottom of their new countries society.
It's like any other society, if you're at the bottom problems and criminality will ensue.
If all the immigrants got sent home their status would just be replaced by the new bottom feeder of that country.
