if the starters are losing on purpose, then shouldn't the coach just bench them and play the bench guys?

after all, the bench guys would not intentionally lose. they would play hard to grab more playing time, pad stats, and get their own pay day.

at the end of the day, the coach controls the team. he can bench and play whoever he damn wants.

In practice it's not that easy. If he just flat out benches the players the fans "come to see" he'll be fired even faster than if he plays them and takes his chances.
