Agreed, the playoff format needs to be changed right away. Get rid of the conferences and just play the best 16 teams. 11 of those teams are in the East.

The Eastern Conference has definitely improved and abridged the gap between the two conferences a bit, but the more causative factor is that the Western Conference teams have mostly underachieved due to coaching and systemic changes that are still sustaining growing pains—the Kings, Rockets, Pelicans, Thunder (a bit slow out of the gates so far, but improving), and so on.

More paramount is how the improvements and drop-offs in each conference impact the respective road to the finals; in that regard, we still see the ever-familiar disparity between the two. Aside from the Rockets, all the Western Conference championship-contenders from last year are still neighbored into the standings where they were expected, while most of the improved Eastern Conference teams are simply "Point A to Point B" teams—teams that are out of the lottery-contention territory and flirting with the playoffs/settling into the playoffs picture, but they still aren't ready for the Point C breakthrough (championship contention).

I'll give credit where it's due with the fact that the Eastern Conference has improved, but don't over-exaggerate it to embellish the Eastern Conference finalist or to be excusatory for them losing in the Eastern Conference Finals. In the grander perspective of it (the playoffs—where it really matters), the Western Conference still wins the preponderance of cut-throat competition by far.

East as a whole from top to bottom got better, and the west top tier looks shaky, and the mid tier teams rounding out the 8 and the 3-4 just outside have gotten stronger it appears...
