Thanks for sharing, that dunk on a rebound by Bird at the end of the video is great stuff!! I never saw that before as well as some of the "floor level" video which shows how great his court vision was for some of those beautiful passes.

Damn... Never seen that 1st play before :applause:

Larry's OVERALL athleticism is VERY underrated though... Seems like most folks only saw him as a broken down by injuries, old player.

Other than maybe Kareem, I think Bird translates to any set of rules and athletes better than anyone.

DAMN, never saw that last one either!! Looks like it was against Houston when Robey was still on the team - do you know the year?

No doubt. :applause:

Of the greats, Bird, Kareem, Duncan, and Jordan fit any set of rules best IMO.

Thank you "Shaq" for the reply. Too bad there is not more footage of early Bird years as he really played reckless and was rough. People do not realize how good of an athlete Bird was = superb conditioning - (did you ever see Bird tired?) and he could jump very well. There is a photo in Sports Illustrated from the November 9th 1981 issue page 84 of Bird blocking a Kareem hook shot. If you've never seen it - it speaks volumes.

From before Larry Bird played in College
[QUOTE]Earlier that season, Mel Daniels, the Indiana Pacers and ABA great, had visited Terre Haute at the request of King, who had coached Daniels at the University of New Mexico. Daniels brought along Pacers teammate and future Naismith Hall of Famer Roger Brown for an afternoon of pick-up ball with some of the Sycamores, including Bird. After the game, Daniels, himself a future Hall of Famer, offered King and Hodges a scouting report on Bird.

I've seen Bird bother Kareem on his sky hooks. Bird used this technique a lot his blocks Rather than try and block the shot across the shooter's body, he would slip by the shooter's body and get the ball as it was being raised up. So he would get to the ball before Kareem got it much above his shoulder.

I've seen Kareem have Bird defending him one one one on the blocks and pass out of the post.

:biggums:

Bird was just a great transition player... Sure he wasn't very fast but he had the terrific IQ, the amazing passing skills, he could've "seen" the play develop before everyone else, he protected the ball well, he made it quick and effective, he was also a legit 6'9 which enabled him to see the floor better... And he's also probably the GOAT outlet passer, that gets you a bucket faster than Magic's showtime :lol

Yeah, you can see Bird slipped out to the ball before Kareem could get his opposite arm in place to ward him off. To get this block he basically jumped just as Kareem started to take the shot, that is, he was able to anticipate what Kareem would do with virtually no reaction hesitation.

Great article but a terrible title, part of the myth that Bird wasn't gifted at birth. Bird was definitely a hard worker, but he also innately gifted. He has said that the game came to him so easily as a kid. That he picked it up much easier than the other kids. There's no coaching and no work out that can teach you his sense of the flow of a game and his anticipation. It's innate.

Good shit, thanks

Great picture yea, very nice read...

Bird speaking about his clutch-play in game7 of the 1981 ECF, vs Philly: "I wanted the ball in my hands for that last shot. Not in anybody else's hands in the world."
Dude had that killer type of mentality since the get-go :applause:

Also funny when he was talking about a stretch where they won 25 out of 26, before Larry got injured (continued to play though)... He said he was peaking, showing his true potential, averaging like 28/14/7... Funny because that's pretty close to what he later averaged during his prime years (with less rebounds).

Cool to see him giving praise to Bobby Jones, or saying that he didn't have the crooked finger in college...

The only time I heard Bird talk about his crooked index finger was on a special interview with John Madden. Bird held up his shooting hand and said "I didn't have this" and Madden said "that looks like a pretty bad deal" and Bird explained how it was tougher as a pro because you always had somebody like Bobby Jones on you (the other team's best defender was always on Bird) and he had to convince Red Auerbach before he signed his rookie contract that he could still shoot, so he showed up 2 hrs early at the gym to get dialed in! Bird was a better shooter in college - I think 53% - his index finger was a mess and no doubt all his practice was an effort to overcome. The second part of the John Madden interview was with Jack Nichloas the golfer - the 2 best players in the world at their sport.
