I think this is possibly one of the worst "official" list I have ever seen. At least they got the first five guys right in the top ten, but the order is way off.

Billboard's List
1 Biggie Smalls
2 J-Zee
3 M&M
4 Eric B's partner
5 Nasir Jones
6 3 Stacks
7 Lauryn Hill
8 Tony Starks
9 K-Dot
10 Weezy, F Baby ... Please say da Baby!

-Look, I love Wu-Tang and I am happy they got recognized on this list, but they put the wrong member here. If anyone belongs in the top ten (which, personally, I have my first Wu member right outside the ten than GZA would be your man.)

-Kendrick Lamar, too early to be this high.

-Lauryn Hill, seriously. At #7 at that. Her discography is far too small.

-Lil Wayne, no. No hate, but just no. At the highest, top 25 maybe ... and that's being generous.

-Andre 3000, while great would have given his spot to someone like Big Daddy Kane, Ice Cube or Scarface. He's borderline top 10.

-And of course, the biggest omission is 2Pac.

While your at it download Ballin like im Kobe mixtape too another amazing rap tape from a 19 yr old out of southside Chicago

No Yeezy is blasphemous

My dad had some random 2Pac album, tried to listen to it but it was just awful. He has some great hits, but the rest of his songs are straight trash.

fucc you man :coleman:

How about this? It's rated by users of this website I frequent, not a bad list of top allbums:

its billboard so it probably has to do something with hit songs and mainstream relevance. its exactly what i thought a billboard top hip hop artist list would be lol

How does that explain the exclusion of Tupac?!? Seriously?! How can this list not have Tupac?! Not even a big fan of his, but he's arguably the most popular rapper of all time.

Tupac is by far the most overrated rapper, I don't know where is idea of him being a GOAT came from

Not a terrible list considering it's from Billboard. What do you expect?

My top ten (no order):
Eminem
Rakim
Big Daddy Kane
Big L
Kool G Rap
KRS-One
Notorious B.I.G.
Jay-Z
Nas
Tupac

I would have to disagree with you here. GZA is a great lyricist, probably one of the best in hip hop, but Ghost has numerous classic albums and stays relevant.
What does Ghost being relevant (he's not) have to do with making the list? Explain Lauryn (last album came out in 1997) Hill's place on this list?

I'd put Method Man and Raekwon over him in this list.

Gang Starr needs to be on any Top 10 list.

Gang Starr is not a rapper, it's a group. Guru was the rapper, DJ Premier was, of course, the DJ.

To me there's a difference between "greatest rappers" and "greatest hip-hop artists", just like there's a difference between "greatest pop singers" and "greatest pop artists" (and the best novels aren't always written by the best prose stylists)

So Kanye while not a great technical rapper is clearly one of the more important artists to ever come out of hip-hop... whereas someone like Kweli kills him on pure verbal skill but isn't anywhere as vital as an overall creative force. Of course some, like Andre 3000, Mos Def etc. have both.

When talking about overall artistry, by the way, it's not necessary to be heavily involved in production/composition as well as rapping... for instance Kendrick is a major artist based mainly on his rapping skills - it's just that those skills are used in a certain way to create works of superior resonance.
