Why are these cities the capitals of their respective states?

NYC, LA, San Francisco, and Chicago are 4 most significant cities in the US and none are capitals?:confusedshrug:

Major cities have tons of private sector businesses and residential real estate taking up property and driving up the values. Why would you wanna try and stick all the government buildings in on top of that?

State capitals are just places to put the state's administrative stuff. It's not some "most important city" designation.

For NY and IL, being centrally located might have something to do with it, also it might be a compromise amongst all the regions of a state, so that the city of New York didn't dominate the State of New York politics.

Precisely. People of Cali won't want to increase taxes to move their capital.
