this is a pretty cool series (http://cavemancircus.com/2015/11/25/10-answers-to-questions-you-always-wondered-about-40/). every week or so a set of the best Q's and A's are collected from reddit and published on caveman-circus. here's an interesting one from this week:

Why, nearly everyday, on the news theres a story detailing a groundbreaking medical discovery (i.e scientists discover cure for AIDS), but then I never hear about it elsewhere?

Billy has always been a fan of baseball. One day, he discovers a strange lightweight metal rod that he believes would make a great baseball bat. He begs his parents to get some money so he can get some grip and other materials to turn the metal bar into a bat. His parents, convinced that this is a decent idea that will keep Billy distracted, agree.

Now Billy has a prototype bat with the metal that he found. He tests the bat against other bats and shows all his friends that it performs much better. The local baseball coach sees Billy using the bat and wonders if it can be sold as a commercial product.

But now, any number of issues could prevent the bat from commercial success:

Possible effects on people: The metal Billy found may actually be harmful to humans with long exposure despite the nice performance properties.

Sourcing: Maybe the metal was a scrap piece of extremely expensive metal. It would cost too much to get this metal and make them into affordable metal bats.

Manufacturing costs: Billy may have been a fanatic at handcrafting his bat but trying to make them on a large scale would cost too much money per bat.

Reliability: Billy may not have used the bat long enough to realize that the metal becomes brittle after a few uses which can cause the bat to perform worse over time or even break.

Regulations: The little leagues may ban the bat because it is too different (in terms of weight, size, etc.) compared to the standard bats.

Company buyout: Another company may purchase their bat invention in order to stop it from being manufactured. This prevents it from going on the market so there is no additional competition that would force companies to lower prices.

Management problems: Having a startup to sell the bat means hiring additional people in addition to just Billy and the coach. It

Rousey has always been a poor sport and a shit talker. That's why people have little respect for her. She wasn't a true champion as she had no class and no respect for her opponents. Most fighters would not do what Holm did by checking up on her opponent after knocking them out.

Q: In the fight, Holm seemed on a completely different level than Rousey. Can Rousey realistically ever catch up to Holm?

Prior to the fight, I thought Rousey was bigger and stronger than Holm, but clearly Holm is the bigger fighter of the two.

potentially? i would say absolutely, assuming holm (34yo) doesn't retire first. ronda (28yo) has years to work on the holes in her game. we already know she's a wizardly grappler, is tough-as-nails, a powerful (if sloppy) puncher, and an all-around driven individual.

realistically? it's very hard to say. after 5+ years she is virtually welded at the hip to her coach, edmond tarverdyan, and would probably have a very hard time switching gyms / trainers even now. this is bad for her, since edmond has shown himself to be a completely incompetent boxing coach, and that's exactly where her biggest improvement needs to come from. OTOH, considering that edmond is only a step or two away from having his gym seized and being sent to jail for tax evasion and fraud, this could all solve itself pretty easily for her.

but on the whole, she clearly needs better people in her life and not all these yes-men and delusional "four horsewomen" types. indeed, she could learn worlds from holly and jackson-wink's gym. holly retiring as a fighter and mentoring ronda would be surprising in some ways, but virtually the best thing that could happen to her IMO.

so yeah, i have no idea if ronda has the ability to meet these huge challenges facing her right now.

DMV2, i think you're overthinking this. MMA boxing is not the same as pro boxing. it's not as complicated and you don't have to train it so hard and long.

holly (a non-grappler) found a way to neutralise ronda's grappling, thus making ronda live in holly's realm of kickboxing. if ronda can similarly find a way to minimise holly's distance management and kickboxing game, she can pull the fight back towards grappling. that could be enough right there.

not to mention, as good as ronda's judo grappling is, i don't think i've ever seen her shoot for a single or double. so just by taking after GSP's MMA-wrestling, she could create a whole 'nother set of problems for her opponents.

also, instead of moving relentlessly straight ahead and being willing to eat blows in order to lay her hands on people, she could learn to circle and bait people inwards. it would take a better sense of timing than she has right now and would require her to fundamentally change her mindset, but in terms of actual time needed to add these kinds of skills, i don't think it would be all that long.

for example, look at how quickly (just a few months) holly prepared herself for ronda's hip tosses and arm bars. without those counters, she probably never would have escaped the 2-3 times she and ronda hit the ground.

with ronda it's mental and about who she's surrounding herself with. but dana's desire to have her rematch holly right away would probably just set her back even further and maybe be enough to make her quit the sport in frustration.

Good post, good idea, good everything, you're a good guy gigantes. Just that most of that stuff was irrelevant/nothing special. I liked where it told about processors, and the betting game (although that's fairly obviously apriori). But a good post
