Imagine going to jail at the age of 25 and getting released at 69. With all the evolution of technology, this guy probably feels like he travelled a hundred years. Interesting video to say the least. Definitely worth a watch

[I]Otis Johnson has been in prison for 44 years. He was locked up in 1971 for the attempted murder of a police officer. He was only twenty five at the time.

He was finally released in August 2014 at the grand old age of sixty nine. A lot has changed since he was released; when he was last on the streets colour TV had only been around for around five years and there were certainly no mobile phones or internet. It must be a massive culture shock to be suddenly catapulted into the modern world.

In an interview and video for Al Jazeera, Johnson recently visited Times Square in New York City, where he was surprised and confused by the modern technology surrounding him: people

I saw someone share this on FB last night.

How shocking it would be to see all that. I felt so bad for the guy, but I think his message is great... thay he did the crime and he deserved the time. He's not bitter or mad, and he understands it.

People like that, who have really changed, and want to integrate back into society, I'd give the shirt off my back to help him. He probably didn't deserve ALL the time he got (don't know how assaulted the assaulted officer was) but he's taking his new life in stride with a positive attitude.

This makes no sense to me.

Don't prisons have stuff like lcd tvs, iPods, etc (not to mention being able to see it on movies)

Depends.

Some do, some dont. If you have a TV in prison, you're usually restricted to the weather channel, and chances are, he probably hung out with the older crowd who probably didn't have any interest in new fangled gadgets.

Attempted murder of a police officer carries a stiffer sentence.

What do you think he should get... 3 years?

Go after a cop and they'll do everything they can to make sure your life is over. That's just how it is.

Damn, 25 to 69. He's lost all his prime years. Crime does not pay.

One of the saddest posters on here.

A lib-sympathizer.

The man tried to kill someone for gods sake.

Seems like such a nice well spoken fellow. Should've gotten out on parole way sooner. Wish you well Otis on the remainder, and beyond.

edit: Dude's an advanced meditator. That's time well spent.

Prison must have a good health care system. 69 is pretty old.

First thing I thought too, but it was without chance of parole.

Damn I feel pretty bad for him. 44 years for attempted murder is crossing the line. Yeah, he tried to take someone's life but in the end he didn't... and still got 40+ years. That's crazy. Hopefully he gets to live up to his 80's or maybe even 90's.

Well...he's black, so he doesn't have to worry about being out of touch with his people since the negro hasn't made any positive strides in 44 years. Racism :D
