if the food system is "corrupt," then it's corrupt because of overpopulation and economics... just like a lot of other things.

from what i've read, those farmers in china used to use standard fish kibble but found themselves losing business when they were undercut by their countrymen and other nations. they had little choice but to adapt. also, because of the danger of using excrement, they have to add antibiotics to the feed. this helps create a different problem that is getting to be pretty big-- various harmful bacteria are evolving past our top-line antibiotics. so going to a hospital can make you even sicker because there's no longer a cure for certain bacterial exposures.

anyway, the problem is not that feces is involved in the food chain but that feces is being used in a way that jumps past some important steps. but just for comparison, the fertile soil we raise our crops in is largely feces and decaying bodies... but rendered inert by the action of microorganisms and time.

fun fact: japan used to save all their human excrement and use it to raise the rice crops. in other places it's called "night soil."

in order to be safe you have to first compost it and filter it properly. the problems with human shit as fertiliser include drug metabolites, heavy metals, parasites and pathogens being introduced and passed on.

some districts apparently do this across the US. if you're off the grid you can also get a self-fertilising toilet.


there's also a growing market for fecal pills in order to improve your gut flora and fauna. i kidd you not.
