Erdogan Gollum meme trial: Turkish court demands inquest into Lord of the Rings character
A Turkish court has demanded a professional examination of the character Gollum from the Lord of the Rings trilogy as part of a case regarding a man who compared president Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the repulsive creature.
Bilgin Ciftci, a doctor, is accused of insulting the president after sharing a meme showing both of them eating, expressing surprise and disbelief.
The experts, including two academics, two behavioural scientists and an expert on cinema, will reportedly decided whether Erdogan was insulted in the tweet.
Ciftci, who claims that Gollum is not a bad character and that he did not insult anyone, faces up to two years in prison if convicted.
The character of Gollum appears in both the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit books by JRR Tolkien and the film versions, directed by Peter Jackson. Always longing for the famous ring that deformed his body and mind, Gollum is described as a "small, slimy creature" in The Hobbit.
The judge opted for the expert assessment after admitting that he had not seen the whole movie series.

That's the best part. How insulted are you, on a scale of 1-10?
I saw a video on Funker530 the other day of an assassination in Turkey. Some big time lawyer basically was taken out by the government and it was obvious the police and security there allowed it to happen.

The theme is that Gollum isn't inherently a bad person, just the victim of unfortunate corruption by the ring.
Guaranteed they don't figure that out and this dude goes to jail for a couple months. LOL

It is well known that Turkey has ridiculous censorship laws. For example, one can be jailed for critical remarks about Ataturk their national hero who was predominantly secular.
I don't think Islam Has a significant influence for this censorship and Turkey if anything is more nationalistic than they are religious although that is changing with Erdogan.

In a way Gollum is inadvertently the hero.
Frodo was ready to pull an Isildur and was running from the volcanic chasm. Gollum caught Frodo before he could escape, and bit the ring off Frodo's hand, where it fell in to the fires of Mount Doom.
Not to mention Gollum played a huge part in getting Frodo and Sam to Mount Doom in the first place.
If it wasn't for Gollum, Sauron would have won.

It feels a similar to a classic parable.

Well, it does. All the proof you'd need is how they behaved over the Danish cartoon affair:

Erdogan has been leaning that way for some time now, and it's not like Jihad hasn't been proclaimed from the Turkish capital before.

In his speech Mr Putin again accused the Turkish government of sheltering and covertly supporting IS militants.
Turkey insists that its F-16 fighters shot down the Su-24 because the bomber had trespassed into its airspace.
Mr Putin scorned them, saying "probably Allah alone knows why they did it.
"And evidently Allah decided to punish the ruling clique in Turkey, by depriving it of any reason or logic."
He said he was making a clear distinction between the Turkish leadership and Russia's "many longstanding and reliable friends in Turkey".
