View Full Version : Why do players like to take long threes for game winners?

Specifically referring to the Miami-OKC game. Both Durant and Westbrook missed game-tying or game-winning shots on threes when they could've easily did exactly what Wade did to win the game. Drive to the basket and either attempt a higher percentage layup or draw the damn foul. Why are teams hung up on threes when a two could win the game?

I think Doc Rivers calls it "Hero Ball"

Neither were open. KD is so good at drawing fouls he should've drove.

Durant took two threes in a row... so ****ing dumb. he could have put the Heat away when it was 95-93 with 40 seconds left if he just scored two.

The last 3 minutes of the Miami/OKC game shows you the stark difference between Durant and Wade's game management and decision making abilities.

Taking long 3's is an easy way out, against usually single coverage.

Lillard did it a few nights ago too... was like a 32-footer. I guess they'd prefer it to a contested shot.

DA FU...

GoatBrook had 1.5 secs... you expect him to catch and drive to the hoop? :facepalm

Durant bricked 2 must needed 3s. Choked

A deep or contested 3 can destroy the morale of a team and can put the game away (dagger) But yeah, if you're wb or kd.. just drive man

Basically:

-Less chance of a turnover/ less defended

He should have drove to the basket. They were up by 2 and then he did it again when they were tied. He was playing hero ball and tried to take the easy way out like another poster mentioned.

Id expect him to catch it closer to the basket. He was purposefully going for a three. A few games ago Wade inbounded an alley oop. These ****** going for long threes like da ****?

Too often they do take it to the rim, but the refs swallow their whistles. Fk that.

Because they're not Dwhistle.

It's harder to inside in crunch time. Defenses defend harder penetration and when they get to the paint a 7 footer will be waiting to contest the shot. Fouls are rarely whistled too.

Durant has a lot of confidence on his 3s (Curry like confidence) and can rise over the opponent so I think it's a good shot for him. Today, he was cold from 3 though.
Westbrook had 1.5 and the play was badly drawn, no time to do anything else.

This is probably the most correct answer of the bunch, mainly because it's true

its the easy way out...

plus you have more chances to actually take the shot (if you drive to the basket, its easier to get blocked/stripped/fumble etc)

however i believe that a nicely drawn last second play is much more satisfying (ie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUjFwqTFfy0 ), than a lucky deep three
