I dunno, but i have heard from multiple immigrants that tomatoes in western countries taste like plastic compared to local ones. Ive had access all my life to home grown veggies and i had a similar experience in the Netherlands and Poland, where tomatoes bought from supermarkets just tasted...like plastic compared to what im used to have. Could be related to your and shade's hate for tomatoes.

I had family members who've had their own vegetable gardens my whole life. My grandparents used to be farmers then downgraded it for their back yard and even those tomoatos weren't very good. Made amazing pasta sauce though. Tomato seems to be a common thing people dont like ive known afew who haven't liked raw tomato unless its hidden or mixed in something well.. sauces are different because they don't taste like raw tomoato
